Allowing NVDA to Speak When Arrow Keys Are Held Down in the Browser

Hello,

I am developing games on the Web and am wondering if there is a way to keep NVDA from shutting up while the arrow keys are being pressed? While the player is moving into a new room, I want NVDA to say "Entering the Armor Shop" while the up arrow is being held down. I wouldn't mind if ctrl shuts NVDA up, but in this circumstance, I don't want the arrow keys to interrupt NVDA.

It looks like aria-live="assertive" should do this, but it doesn't.

Under my NVDA settings / keyboard, I see "Speech Interrupt for typed characters" and "Speech Interrupt for Enter Key", but not "Speech interrupt for arrow keys".

Is the best solution to either have users use wasd for moving with the "Speech interrupt for typed characters", have Web Speech API say something, or have users use the mouse for movement?

I would prefer there to be a way where I can send an alert that can be interrupted only with the ctrl key, as it will allow users to use their own screen reader and synth without modification and choose their own mode of navigation without worrying about missing messages.

If there is no option now to do this, could there be a checkbox added to settings / keyboard that says "interrupt aria-assertive on keypress"? The default would be checked and if it is not checked, then NVDA will not interrupt an assertive message for anything but ctrl or maybe window focus.

What do others think?

Thanks,

Perry, can you provide some examples of circumstances where you are having to alt-tab out and in of something to re-acquire focus?

As an aside, glad to see another Proton Mail user!

Not quite answering your question, but related to the question of tabs navigation:

My add-on BrowserNav adds browse mode shortcuts Y and Shift+Y to jump to next/previous tab on web pages.

Then of course you can press Enter to select that tab.

You can download it on the official NVDA add-ons website:

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/browsernav.en.html

http://pauljadam.com/demos/aria-tabpanel.html

Generally, a tab panel should be changed to different information based on the tab that is currently selected. The “aria-selected” attribute on the web page should be modified to show which tab is currently selected. Either clicking on a tab with mouse, space while in focus, or using arrow keys in “focus mode” should change the active panel. The authoring practices recommends that the list of tabs use only one tab stop, and that pressing tab from within any of the tabs in the tablist should move you to the visible tab panel, or the first interactive component in the tab panel. Often this practice is ignored and each tab can be reached with the tab key.

Also, though recommended that the tab panels all be after the all of the tabs, this does not always occur.

Refreshing the screen isn't a focus problem.  If you lose focus, you are not in the application any longer.  Refreshing the screen is done if old information persists after it shouldn't or if information is displayed incorrectly.

I believe that you can refresh the screen by leaving and returning to the application.  But if you lose focus, that is a separate problem.

A set of tabs should have an associated tab panels where there is one tab for each tab panel. When a tab is activated the associated tab panel should become visible to both the sighted and blind user. The group of tabs in is usually  called a tablist.

If your restaurant site is like the Amazon ALEXA site, once you've selected the desired tab, simply press H to navigate by heading to the content in that tab. I hope that helps.

On my phone, it uses a VPN, but it uses a proxy on my laptop. Certain NVDA or add-on functions that use the internet don't work with the proxy for some reason, and if I turn it off in Windows 10's proxy settings, the app just turns it back on. The app has no settings of its own. Some Windows 10 apps don't work with it either, but this isn't as big a deal. I've actually had to temporarily uninstall the app and restart my computer if I want to check for NVDA or add-on updates, or check for them manually. Is there any way I can get NVDA to work with the proxy server the app uses? It would be wonderful if this is possible. Thanks.

I think that works only when in browse mode.  If there is a general refresh screen command, I don't know it.

Are you sure this is not restricted to browse mode?

I would like set Nvda to stop anouncing numbers of items.

Could you give me an advice, please?
