Re: new keyboard issue

Quentin Christensen

Interesting, I've seen keyboards which can only accept two keys or three keys at once, but generally you can press any two (or three) keys on the keyboard in that case - odd that it limits some of the keys.

As it's an issue with either the hardware or driver for the keyboard, there isn't much that can be done by anyone else. The first thing I'd do is to try to work out which model you have, and look for an updated driver from the manufacturer.

Kind regards

Quentin.

It's something you just have to deal with. That keyboard can't handle that particular combination of keys pressed at the same time.
As apparently I also have this problem, I'd like to know, isn't there  any workaround for cases like ours?
Plus, why that happens? I mean, apparently we don't have a clue about which combo the keyboard will or not be capable of handling until we put it to work. Isn't it bad practice from the manufacturer's side?

Re: Problem about NVDA control and arrow keys

Quentin Christensen

Hi Marcio,

NVDA+control+left and right is correct to move through the synth settings ring if NVDA is set to desktop keyboard layout.  If set to laptop keyboard layout, then your command of NVDA+control+shift+arrows is correct.

Re your issue, the only thing I can think of is your right arrow perhaps serving a dual function and you need to press Fn or something to make it work normally?  Can you press right arrow otherwise?  Trying it myself here, I can move in both directions around the synth setting ring in both desktop and laptop keyboard layouts.

If you turn on input help (NVDA+1) and then press the keystroke, what does NVDA report? (NVDA+1 again to turn input help off).

Kind regards

Quentin.

Actually, the command is Control+Shift+NVDA+Right/Left arrows to move through the options and Control+Shit+NVDA+Up/Down arrows to configure the option you've selected.

Hope this helps :)

On a related note, I just discovered something curious.
Here, Control+Shift+NVDA+Left arrow works like a charm. However, the same isn't true for the command using the right arrow. In fact, the problem seems to be with the combo Control+Insert+Right arrow.
Can anyone tell me why that is happening? Would my keyboard not be capable of processing this combo at once?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Problem about NVDA control and arrow keys

Quentin Christensen

Hi Surendra,

Assuming you are using NVDA in desktop keyboard layout, then NVDA+control+left and right arrows are correct for what you are trying to do.  (If using NVDA in laptop layout, then Marcio's post is correct and the keystroke is NVDA+control+shift+arrows)  Firstly, check that num lock is "off" if you are using the numpad insert as your NVDA modifier key.  Are you using any add-ons?  If you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled (press NVDA+Q then down arrow to "restart with add-ons disabled" and press enter) does the issue still occur?

If so, if you could send a copy of your log to info@..., I can have a look.

Kind regards

Quentin.

The last I heard, it would only be available posibly for preorder in the UK. You could sign up to potentially have yours shipped by the 31st of October, 2019. They are apparently only making 40 of them. Other people could have a "similar opportunity  some time later." So probably nothing to get excited about. Here is the link.

Well it would be nice to have a full sized braille display I could use for braille reading and other things.

Re: accessible e-book creation?

It maybe easier, to get your html files and either add then manually into one big file, as html or make a pdf or simply have the entire book in a huge text file, then using codex you can make a chm file, epub and other things.

I am not sure what the easiest way would be to make the book but in a word processer with the chapters in one huge file, you can make an epub easily enough.

Hi list ken with a question.  This past week at the national federation of the blind convention,  one of the recipients of the baloton award was the manufacturer of a new braille display.  It is a company in the UK.  It is supposedly is a nine line 360 cell devise.  Is this out now or is it a prototype and if it’s available is there anyone on list who might be able to tell when NVDA will be able to support it

Sam,

The fastest way would be to go to the 64bit version of Office 365 as long you have a 64bit Windows.

But don’t forget that you would have to uninstall and re-install Office and that would lead to loosing your Outlook settings.

I wrote Cyrille a message about the problem, She is taking care about the current addon. I’m going to find a solution together with her to get this solved.

I can offer you my older addon outlook enhanced in the meantime, I modified it so that it  works with the new control-ID’s.

labeling the button objects in decTalk speak windows

Josh Kennedy

Hi,

In jaws I can turn on its accessibility driver, and then the jaws cursor shows me the graphics in the old windows95 decTalk speak window notepad-type applications and I can click the graphics for play, different voices, rate faster, rate slower, and so on. Only after turning on the legacy accessibility driver does this work. So my question is this, how can I easily, as a person who is not a programmer, *easily* label these buttons with NVDA? I turned on speak tooltips and routed the mouse but there are no tooltips, OCR does not help either. Can someone please make an addon so I can relabel and reclass objects as I come across them using object navigation, please?

Re: mumble with nvda?

Tyler Spivey

Yes. There's a bug with the keyboard hook which breaks NVDA's use of the keyboard while in Mumble.
The fix is to deal with it long enough to go to options, Settings, Shortcuts and shift+tab until you find Enable Windows hooks and uncheck it. There's also a .reg file floating around if you prefer that.

If this isn't in your version, upgrade to 1.3 RC.

Thank you.  I will know now to check the message archives.  The suggested solution, though the most counterintuitive I have ever experienced, worked like a charm.
Who would have thought that disabling the editing of cells would, in fact, enable the editing of cells with a screen reader.  As I noted in my first message, the problem affected JAWS and NVDA in exactly the same way .
I was fearing that the problem stemmed from our overly-paranoid security conscious IT department. We have so many things locked down that just working is sometimes hard.
Again, however, thank you.  I am sending this message, not just to say thank you (those tend to clutter list serves, but to let others know that the prescribed fix, which actually seems silly and counterintuitive, really works.
I am surprised it is not more widely published.

NVDA add-on: Developer toolkit 2019.1.1 now available.

Andy B.

Hi,

Developer toolkit 2019.1.1 is ready for download.

Release announcement: https://github.com/ajborka/nvda_developer_toolkit/releases/tag/2019.1.1

Direct download: https://github.com/ajborka/nvda_developer_toolkit/releases/download/2019.1.1/developerToolkit-2019.1.1.nvda-addon

Repository: https://github.com/ajborka/nvda_developer_toolkit

Mailing list: http://www.groups.io/g/nvda-developer-toolkit

Developer toolkit (DTK) is an NVDA add-on that assists blind and visually impaired developers to independently create visually appealing user interfaces or web content. This is done by enabling DTK, navigating around the user interface or web content, then performing gestures to obtain information about the appearance, location, and size of the focused control. To enable or disable DTK, press alt+windows+k on your keyboard.

2019.1.1

• DTK will no longer attempt to load itself multiple times when announcing the version number.

• DTK will be disabled on install. Previously, the add-on would enable itself when installed.

• Messages presented to the user can now contain non-ascii characters.

• Pressing gestures such as a, b, c, f, h, l, r, s, t, v, and w no longer interupt NVDA speech when copying to the clipboard.
