Re: Sluggish NVDA for Weeks

Bob Cole

I experienced this same issue with Notepad++. I sent an email to the list about it, some sort of dispute arose between some others which went totally off topic, and the thread was closed. With this particular application, I noticed the same exact thing... Very noticeable delays in speech output.

Re: Sluggish NVDA for Weeks

Betsy,
If anyone comes up with a solution please let us know.
Well, not the perfect solution, for sure, but I've found that using Thunderbird with the message pane disabled speds it up considerably.

Hope this helps a bit :)

I am having the same issues with NVDA and Thunderbird as well. They just started the past few days. When I am deleting a message it does not happen instantly like it used to but now there are several seconds before it will go on to the next message. If anyone comes up with a solution please let us know. Sometimes it will be fine for a couple of messages and then lag once again.

Hi,

I'm afraid I don't experience this problem.  Is this in a specific application?  Mozilla Thunderbird seems to lag from time to time on my computer for instance, going to "not responding" when I arrow up and down the message list or worse, when I write a message.  I don't think this is related to NVDA.  Microsoft Word in long documents with NVDA does seem to be slow, but a 5-second pause between each line is something I don't often see.  But if it happens no matter what application is opened, it if happens in the good ol' notepad, that's indeed worrying.  I would first check on the system resources (perhaps you have a hidden app gorging on your CPU or memory).

Using the same version of NVDA on Windows 10 (64-bit) here.

Re: NVDA Silent Installation

Steven,
Is there a way to install NVDA silently?
Well, I'd think so, although I've never done it.

From the Userguide:
--install-silent
Silently installs NVDA (does not start the newly installed copy)

Have you tried an earlier version?  At this point, we don't know if something in the version you are using is causing the problem on your machines or if something else, unrelated is.  Before you try an earlier version, have you tried another synthesizer?  What synthesizer are you using now?

I would think the last version to work with XP would work with VISTA.  Someone will likely know what that version is.

Ralf,
Just out of curiosity, how can I access older versions of NVDA, like this one?
Going directly to the /download link it seems that it's only possible to download the latest version.

NVDA recognizes SAPI 5 voices.  In the synthesizer menu, there is an item that says something like Microsoft SAPI 5.  People are using all sorts of SAPI 5 voices and some people are using old SAPI 4 voices with NVDA.

I'm not sure what DecTalk version you are referring to.  A Number of years ago, I tried one that is not at all like the DecTalk people are used to.

There is already a SAPI5 version of Dectalk that doesn't crash and
sounds very similar to the original. But, as with all SAPI voices,
NVDA doesn't recognize it.Orlando Enrique Fiol
