I made it over the modifier key hurdle, but tripped up on another issue. When I load NVDA my arrow keys no longer seem to work (i.e. within a word document I cannot move the cursor keys). Same thing regardless of what app I'm using. I turned on NVDA speak command keys, and learned that choosing the left arrow on my scanning menus will respond by speaking "numpad 4." And likewise, the right arrow says "numpad 6." The up and down arrows speak "numpad 8" and "numpad 2" respectively. But it does no action. And the numlock key has no affect.
I tried going to autohotkeys again, and I remapped the four numpad keys to the literal arrow keys as follows:
Numpad4::Left
Numpad6::Right
Numpad8::Up
Numpad2::Down
But when I load NVDA, the arrow keys still don't work. And choosing arrow keys still speak numpad numbers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate!

You be the man! I installed the addon and I can get the insert and capslock to work as the NVDA key through EZ Keys. This is a huge breakthrough for me. Thanks!

Interestingly enough, that autohotkey script is working here under Windows 10. For some reason it doesn't work for you, so I came up with something else.
I wrote an addon that makes NVDA think sticky keys is enabled, which triggers the code that gives you a sticky modifier key, and only affects NVDA.
Download this addon and install it. Once done, whatever keys you have checked as modifiers in keyboard settings will stick for one press.
You should then be able to tell EZ Keys to press caps lock or insert, then press t to read the window title. NVDA should beep when you press the modifier.

At some point, you evidently installed a program that used some unrestricted DecTalk Voices.

 

There is a SAPI5 version of E-Speak.  How you got the program, I have no idea.

ones. I have 2 voices that say eSpeak US Eng one female and one male.
Both sound better than the built in eSpeak that comes with nvda. I also
find several French voices that are from the DecTalk synth. I never
downloaded or installed any of these. Just wondering where they came
from and why I have them on my machine? Are these now part of Windows or

Well, not the perfect solution, for sure, but I've found that using Thunderbird with the message pane disabled speds it up considerably.

I am having the same issues with NVDA and Thunderbird as well. They just started the past few days. When I am deleting a message it does not happen instantly like it used to but now there are several seconds before it will go on to the next message. If anyone comes up with a solution please let us know. Sometimes it will be fine for a couple of messages and then lag once again.
