Did you see Jonathan Cohn's reply to your question on this last week?  If so, did that help?

His suggestion was: "I have seen this happen when an addon is not completely installed. I ended up going to the
%appdata%\nvda\ directory and finding the semi-installed addon and deleting it"

Otherwise, I was going to suggest, a copy of your NVDA log might yield some information.  Based on Jonathan's reply, if that is the issue, uninstalling NVDA won't fix it, as it doesn't remove add-ons.

Kind regards

Quentin.

You didn't say what browser you are using.  You are getting the error because the browser doesn't have the protocol, if that is the correct word, used by the site to make a secure connection.  Whatever browser you are using, you will be able to open the page with a browser that can communicate with the site securely.

Re: Sluggish NVDA for Weeks

Just to add my 2c:

For those experiencing sluggishness (anywhere):

Firstly, see if you can narrow down which program - a couple of people have mentioned Thunderbird and Notepad++.  If you're not sure, see if you can narrow it down to maybe one of these, or another program.  If you can work out a specific set of steps to reproduce it, that's even better.

Next, try NVDA 2019.2 rc1: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2019-2rc1-released/  As some have noted, this should fix several issues, and this may help you.

You shouldn't need to install the rc version to test this particular issue, though if you do, it will automatically update to the final version once it's released.  If you have installed the RC version, or any other software recently, be sure you have restarted your computer in the meantime - go to the shut down options and restart.

If you are using any add-ons, restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled can help ensure that issues are not caused by those, which can help us narrow down our troubleshooting.

If all else fails, if you can send me a copy of your log and the steps to reproduce the issue you are having, I can look into it - You can find more info about the log files here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/LogFilesAndCrashDumps

Kind regards

Quentin.

Message pane is something that as far as I know every email client has. It will allow you to see the message without actually opening it, it's kind of hard to explain.
Some people like this feature. I used to like it when I first started using Thunderbird but it quickly turned out to be more of an annoyance than something else, specially because it will mark all messages as read as soon as you land on them, until or unless you disable the pane or configure Thunderbird differently.

Now with the proper introductions in place, it's time to know how to disable it. For this, just press your F8 key.

Here's how you fix that. First, check if EZ Keys has a setting to send the extended arrow keys. If so, enable it and you should be fine.
If not, then we need to unbind the keypad keys.
To do that, open the NVDA menu, Settings, Input Gestures. Expand Text review in the tree.
Here's what maps to what:
Reports the line of the current navigator object where the review cursor is situated: numpad 8 Reports the character of the current navigator object where the review cursor is situated. Numpad 2 Moves the review cursor to the previous word of the current navigator object and speaks it: Numpad 4 Moves the review cursor to the next word of the current navigator object and speaks it: Numpad 6 Expand each of them, select the numpad key and hit remove.

The other numpad keys are bound in there as well, e.g. home/end/pgup/pgdn.
Once you unbind what you need, you then might want to either switch to laptop layout so more things are bound to NVDA+something, or start re-binding stuff. Any of the default NVDA binds that use the arrow keys probably won't work, but you can just rebind things.

I tried going to autohotkeys again, and I remapped the four numpad keys to the literal arrow keys as follows:

Numpad4::Left
Numpad6::Right
Numpad8::Up
Numpad2::Down

But when I load NVDA, the arrow keys still don't work. And choosing arrow keys still speak numpad numbers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate!

Interestingly enough, that autohotkey script is working here under Windows 10. For some reason it doesn't work for you, so I came up with something else.

I wrote an addon that makes NVDA think sticky keys is enabled, which triggers the code that gives you a sticky modifier key, and only affects NVDA.

Download this addon and install it. Once done, whatever keys you have checked as modifiers in keyboard settings will stick for one press.
You should then be able to tell EZ Keys to press caps lock or insert, then press t to read the window title. NVDA should beep when you press the modifier.

I remapped the ` key simply because it is essentially available. When I trigger the ` key, I get the ToolTip showing "Insert key is Down." And triggering again, the ToolTip will show "Insert key is Up." But when I load NVDA and then trigger the ` key, the ToolTip always shows "Insert key is up." In other words, with NVDA loaded, the autohotkeys script no longer toggles holding down the Insert key.

Thanks for the continued help with this...

Questions:
1. Does EZ Keys let you press caps lock or insert, just not hold them down?
If it does, Windows sticky keys will work with NVDA to hold down the modifier.
2. Does it let you hold down any other keys? If so, I've got an addon somewhere which should be easily modifiable to let you do that.
As an example, does it give you the ability to hold down left alt or right alt independently? If so, you could use one for an alt key and the other for an NVDA modifier.
If none of these ideas will work, what does it let you do?
Make sure that, when you're testing your autohotkey script, you have "Handle keys from other applications" checked in NVDA's keyboard settings. If you don't, then NVDA won't see the injected key.
If you send that script, I might be able to test over here and figure out what breaks. Using it with a keyboard should also have the same problem.

Subject: Re: [nvda] NVDA modifier key and Words+ EZ Keys

Questions:

I am a long time single switch scanning user of Word+ EZ Keys. I'm

using the NVDA modifier key from my scanning software. There is no
direct way to "hold down" the Insert or Capslock from EZ Keys. I am
trying to use Autohotkeys to simulate holding down the Insert, but
the key doesn't work once I load NVDA.

Does anyone have suggestions for remapping the NVDA modifier key to
something like Alt-0 or something?

Thanks!

Re: Very weird one!

There is a unrestricted dectalk voice package from enablerehab.

email them, enablerehab@....

Sadly the biggest issue with the port is that the volume on the voices are all kinds of messed up and they don't know why.

I did pay 10 bucks for it, but yeah.

The deal is that they need to give phonix anything, so 50 cents or more they don't care really.

So its basically pay what you want if you are die hard enough.

The deal started because people started pirating it but its not a major selling point in fact its discontinued, because of low sales.

Point is its not free but you can get it for basically nothing if you really give a damn.

It did cost 10 bucks origionally so I payed for it because I anted it but I have never used it and well with eloquence the way it is, I won't be doing that anymore.

There is a SAPI5 version of E-Speak.  How you got the program, I have no idea.

I just checked under Microsoft SAPI 5 voices, and I find several odd
ones. I have 2 voices that say eSpeak US Eng one female and one male.
Both sound better than the built in eSpeak that comes with nvda. I also
find several French voices that are from the DecTalk synth. I never
downloaded or installed any of these. Just wondering where they came
from and why I have them on my machine? Are these now part of Windows or
something?  Curious minds want to know.

Thanks

Re: Money managing app for windows 10?

There are scads of them.   And a good place to get this sort of information relative to both Windows 10 and for screen reader users is on the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group.

your question is somewhat confusing as worded, but in the current issue of AFB Access World there is an article about a program called "Fresh Books" which is supposedly similar to Quick Books, but more accessible and easy to use.

Hi Steven

have a look on the following page but jump right down to the bottom called Deployment of NVDA

The link to this page is https://www.nvaccess.org/corporate-government/

There might be some other information if you are running a large network that you might require.

The other parts that you might use are found in this section of the user guide where this option is also.

Hope it helps.

Re: NVDA And Vista

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi

The latest version of nvda you can use on vista is nvda 2017.3 if i remember right.

Maybe if quentin is emailed he might be able to point you in the right direction for it or some one might have a copy on the list.

Re: Sluggish NVDA for Weeks

Betsy,
I know so little about Thunderbird that I have no idea what you mean buy message pane and how to access it.

Sorry for my ignorance.
Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. We are all learners to some degree :)

And after writing all of this I've realised that it's way more about Thunderbird than about NVDA. So if you need more help, contact me privately or better yet, see you on our Thunderbird group! :)

It's worth noticing, also, that another plaace where we can talk about it is the Chat Subgroup, where we discuss anything that's not directly related to NVDA.
If you want to subscribe, send a blank email to chat+subscribe@nvda.groups.io.

Hope this helps :)

Well, not the perfect solution, for sure, but I've found that using Thunderbird with the message pane disabled speds it up considerably.

Hope this helps a bit :)
