Re: Issue with NVDA, Thunderbird, and pasting links

Quentin Christensen

I must admit I don't use Thunderbird all the time, but I just tried using NVDA 2019.2 RC2.

Using Thunder 52.9.1 32-bit, (Told you I don't use Thunderbird all the time), I created a new message, typed a few words, alt+tabbed to a browser, copied the URL, came back and pasted it, what I found was that NVDA would report the keystroke if I have speak command keys on, but not otherwise acknowledge pasting the link.  When I read or arrow through the message however, NVDA didn't have any trouble reporting the link when it got to it.

Letting Thunderbird update to version 60.8.0 (32-bit), I repeated and found exactly the same behaviour.

Maybe there is something in your log?  See https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/LogFilesAndCrashDumps for info on getting to the NVDA log.

Regards

Quentin.

Hello there,

I am noticing while pasting links in to my emails that NVDA 2019RC2 is
taking some time to realize that the email link has been pasted in to
the message.  Usually I always read my messages before sending unless I
am in a hurry and I notice that when the link is first embedded it
doesn't want to read the link unless I go up and down with the arrows
several times.  It can vary how many times this is done.  Here are the
exact steps I take.

1.  Open Thunderbird.

2.  Open a new message with Control plus N.

3.  I first write the message and when I get to the point where I think
the link needs to be embedded I have the link in the clipboard and paste
it in to the message.

3A.  I always try to make sure the link actually embeds so I will
especially just look for the link by going up and down as well.

4.  Usually at this point is where I proof read the message and here is
where NVDA has a hard time attempting to read the link.

NVDA is great and I use it every day for my work as a patient advocate.
I prefer it over any other screen reader that Windows can provide me with.

I have never embedded music in an email but I do like the simple way of inserting attachments in Windows Mail.

Find whatever music or other file or document you want  to attach and then simply copy and paste it into the body of the windows Mail message and it is neatly attached to the message.

People either seem to love it or hate it but the Windows 10 Mail app in my view works well.

It does not have bells or whistles but is normally a breeze to set up and on my system works very snappily. I really like the Preview feature with NVDA reading out enough of most mails for me to decide whether I need to read fully or just delete.

Press enter to read an email and escape to exit it.

Left and right arrows open and close threads in the inbox. Threads automatically open as you cursor down through the inbox.

There are 2 quirky anomalies which you need to get used to.

Firstly when replying to messages you need to press alt twice quickly to force NVDA to focus into the edit area to type your message.

The second is that as Mail loads new messages it sometimes shifts focus away from the inbox list of messages to the navigation bar.

If this happens you need to shit tab to focus again on the message list.

I have got so used to this it is part of my muscle memory now and is not really an issue though some may find it annoying.

If you are at all familiar with versions of Outlook a lot of keystroke shortcuts are familiar.

For example, Control enter to send a mail, control Y to open up a list of all your email accounts and folders. F9 to force a check for new mail, control R for reply and so on and so on. F7 does a spell check as in Outlook but here this unusually works on a single word at a time so you will need to press F7 repeatedly to navigate to each spelling error in a message.

I use Outlook as well but Windows Mail is definitely my preferred client for rapid handling of large numbers of emails.

Re: JAWS extend select mode in NVDA?

Hi,

Actually, it is more than an NVDA command: in order to move by sentences (a very different topic), the app itself must provide a way to tell screen readers that sentence navigation is possible. Outlook and Word can do this, and possibly other apps.

Cheers,

Joseph

Is there something similar to JAWS's extend select mode in NVDA? In JAWS one can press F8 to start extended selection, and then can select text without using the shift key.

Hmmm, not sure, but I'd think that it can be done using NVDA+F9 to mark the beginning of the selection and NVDA+F10 twice quickly, one to mark the end and the other to copy what you've selected.

Re: JAWS extend select mode in NVDA?

Hi,

No, what this person wants to know is if NVDA will detect selections if F8 is pressed from Word, moves around, and tries to see if there is text selection, and the answer is “sort of”.

The command this person is referring to is not a JAWS command – as Jackie pointed out, I can confirm that this is a Word specific command.

Cheers,

Joseph

That is not a Jaws function. Rather, it's a function of the editor
you're working in. So, if you have Word, for example, it works there.
You'll need to check w/other programs to see if they have such
functionality. Marcio, what you're talking about is NVDA's screen
review function. It only works in that particular mode.

Re: A Possible Bug with NVDA Find Function

Marcio,

I'm going to stick with Gmail as my example.  It would be helpful, if it's happening on a site that does not require login, if you would give the URL where you're having problems.

If I am in the Gmail inbox, if I fire up NVDA Find, the announcement from NVDA is, "Find dialog, type in text you wish to find," while if I fire up the browser find NVDA says, "Find in page inbox, " followed by more verbiage.   If I'm in the Sent box, then substitute "sent" for "inbox."   The announcement for the NVDA find is invariant.

As far as I can tell, and this is what I'd expect, the NVDA find is looking for the text you give it, with or without case sensitivity depending on your checkbox state, on the page being displayed in the browser.   The same is true of the web browser search itself.   The same is not true if you use the Search Mail box that's part of the Gmail page, which will search all e-mail messages in sender, subject, and message bodies for each message.

Without literally seeing what's happening, or having some way to know definitively what you're doing via other means, I can't say much more.

Re: JAWS extend select mode in NVDA?

Akshaya,
Is there something similar to JAWS's extend select mode in NVDA? In JAWS one can press F8 to start extended selection, and then can select text without using the shift key.
Hmmm, not sure, but I'd think that it can be done using NVDA+F9 to mark the beginning of the selection and NVDA+F10 twice quickly, one to mark the end and the other to copy what you've selected.

Re: A Possible Bug with NVDA Find Function

Gene,
Did you start this thread because you had different behavior in the same contexts with earlier versions of NVDA?
I don't know, as in earlier versions of NVDA i wasn't used to use this function.
All I know is that now, with NVDA 2019.1, I'm getting this behavior.

Re: Windows 10 and Eudora mail

Hi, Jeff and list:

Maybe using the F11 shorcut for use the all screen mode? Perhabs it could work. I don't know, I thaught that Eudora was discontinued for some years. I'm using now Thunderbird. I don't like it a lot, but there are some alternatives like Outlook, Windows 10 Mail client, Firefox or web client. Try and choose the best, really all are more or less similar, has the same way of use, shortcuts etc.

Cheers,

Salva.
