Hi. What about it now, on 2019? I think that accessbridge is necesary yet, but I don't know anymore. I think that I'm going to use SPSS the next year on the university.
Anyone now a manual, basic things for use it, shortcuts, tips for use with NVDA?
Thanks in advance.

I have a user who is trying to make the transition from jaws to NVDA. He would like NVDA to read keys like tab, shift tab, enter, alt F4 etc but not the down arrow, up arrow, left/right arrows etc. Is there any way of forcing NVDA not to read certain modifier keys?

Very best wishes,

George,

I agree with you and some developers listen while others do not.  It depends on the developer.

Sarah,

I agree.  There are certain instances where these labels would be very beneficial to users of the screen reader.  so for exxample, you have an app like the HP app that has absolutely nothing from the get go that is accessible to blind users.  If one uses the labeler feature it may increase the productive use of the HP app.

Yes, but probably not in those terms (not that they're not true).   Not only is accessibility becoming more of a "designed-in" phenomenon but so are certain coding conventions like labeling buttons.

When brought to the attention with something like, "this poses an accessibility issue for screen reader users, as well as being inconsistent as far as labeling buttons goes," you're more likely to get the desired result.

Also, there are times when certain things are being pulled up out of standard libraries for a given application that may have been coded long ago.  Those using those may be entirely unaware that there were lapses as far as accessibility-friendliness when those libraries were initially coded.   There's not a lot of regression testing to begin with for stuff that's "been around since dirt" and what there is likely has zero focus on the accessibility angle, while new code is a different kettle of fish.

People either seem to love it or hate it but the Windows 10 Mail app in my view works well.

It does not have bells or whistles but is normally a breeze to set up and on my system works very snappily. I really like the Preview feature with NVDA reading out enough of most mails for me to decide whether I need to read fully or just delete.

Press enter to read an email and escape to exit it.

Left and right arrows open and close threads in the inbox. Threads automatically open as you cursor down through the inbox.

There are 2 quirky anomalies which you need to get used to.

Firstly when replying to messages you need to press alt twice quickly to force NVDA to focus into the edit area to type your message.

The second is that as Mail loads new messages it sometimes shifts focus away from the inbox list of messages to the navigation bar.

If this happens you need to shit tab to focus again on the message list.

I have got so used to this it is part of my muscle memory now and is not really an issue though some may find it annoying.

If you are at all familiar with versions of Outlook a lot of keystroke shortcuts are familiar.

For example, Control enter to send a mail, control Y to open up a list of all your email accounts and folders. F9 to force a check for new mail, control R for reply and so on and so on. F7 does a spell check as in Outlook but here this unusually works on a single word at a time so you will need to press F7 repeatedly to navigate to each spelling error in a message.

I use Outlook as well but Windows Mail is definitely my preferred client for rapid handling of large numbers of emails.

I have just switched from a Windows 7 to a Windows 10 computer. In 7 Eudora mail worked fine. In Windows 10 I am having trouble when arrowing up and down any mailboxes such as the In box, etc. Now, I get any particular entry spoken as a portion of one email's sender & subject  and a portion of another email's sender and subject. And, generally neither is associated with the actual email if I were to open it. I have maximized main windows and child windows with no difference. Anyone have a suggestion?

Or, perhaps it is time to move on to another email client. I like Eudora for the simplicity of using keyboard commands for sorting mailboxes in various ways. Thanks for any suggestions about email clients, too.

We may be at cross purposes.

Control Y whilst focussed on the Inbox , just as in Outlook, will allow quick navigation to all your email folders for all the accounts you have.

Simply use the cursor keys to move up and down the folder list and press enter on the folder you want to navigate to.

How does this affect the various folders for each account?

I have  my email accounts linked into a single inbox but If I want to review mail by accounts I simply press control Y to bring up the folder list and then cursor down to the account I want to review.

I do not know why you are having this problem. I have been using the windows 10 mail app for the last three years. When I open an email I just use the down arrow to read.  What I would prefer is that the messages AKA list of emails were next to all accounts. I have several email accounts and when I am done with one I need to tab five times to change accounts.

hello all! I am so glad that you brought that up about how the Windows mail app is acting. I have had exactly the same problem in the Windows 10 mail app, what I have to do, is use the review cursor reading commands to read the mail message with the review cursor, find where I want to edit, and then press the key command to move the focus to where the review cursor is, and then I can cracked my mistakes. The the review cursor is the only way I can read an email. You are cracked, if I simply use the up and down arrow keys the focus will not say the correct text at all for what is on each line and the message that you are typing in the mail app. Nvda has not worked well in the Windows 10 mail app for a long time when it comes to typing, reading, and doing just about anything with messages. I have to use many round about ways to even use the Windows 10 mail app oh, like I said, I have to read messages with the review cursor. David Moore

Ok yes – I could not do this in earlier versions of Outlook I have used but I have just tried it in the latest Outlook 365 and it indeed does now work.

You can do this in Windows Live Mail and, as I recall, in Outlook as well.  I don't know what other programs this may work in.

I have never embedded music in an email but I do like the simple way of inserting attachments in Windows Mail.

Find whatever music or other file or document you want  to attach and then simply copy and paste it into the body of the windows Mail message and it is neatly attached to the message.

I’m using windows tem mail app with gmail.  I have no problems with it.  What I do miss is this. In the xp days when I used outlook express. I used to be able to embed music in the e-mail.  Someone showed me once howto do it.  I only did it once but forgot how to do it.  I wished I can do it using the win ten mail app.  Oh well. Those days are gone.  I never knew how to do it using outlook ten. When I used win 7.

Similar to you when I have to do a reply I sometimes have to shift tab and tab back then everything is fine. I will try your solution of tapping alt twice.

I am replying to your message using the latest build of NVDA and windows Mail  on Windows 10 19.03 with full normal reading and typing feedback.

There is a slight anomaly which has existed for some time in that when I first reply to a message and want to type in the edit field I need to press the alt key quickly twice to get proper typing focus.

After that NVDA behave entirely normally and as you would expect.

I am not sure then what is causing the difficulties you are experiencing but it does not appear to be generalised.

Have you considered making a fresh install of NVDA?
