Giles Turnbull

I was sighted in the early days of the internet (1990s) so websites I designed were hand-coded html and I still do that now in my blind Wordpress blog posts. I don't do anything more advanced than headings, bold and italics, occasional lists and images so I write my html in notepad, save it on my computer and open the draft in Firefox and then, if things are where they are supposed to be (i.e. I haven't missed a closing tag) I paste it into what is I think the classic editor and then post it.

I did pay a website designer to set my blog up so that it looked okay and the admin side was navigable. I've been using it since 2016 and post once per week ... last week's was my 141st blog post.

Meanwhile, there's a work-around. It requires a few more keystrokes, but it works. Instead of trying to use the auto-complete feature in any of the fields, use the To, Cc, and Bcc buttons located above the fields. When you press any of these buttons, a dialog opens. You can then type the first few letters of the recipient's name and press Enter. A list that NVDA can read is displayed. You can arrow down and find the contact you want. Press Enter three times, and the recipient's name and/or address are placed in the appropriate field. Keystrokes access these buttons: Alt plus T for to, Alt plus C for Cc, and Alt plus B for Bcc. I hope this is clear and helpbbl.

I figured out what the problem is, the sentense nav addon was conflicting with alt down and alt up arrows.

Ok, looks like when you press F7 you now get a summary of how many spelling and grammatical errors there are and you can press ENTER to go to the first one.  Either an extra step or a useful bit of information, depending on how you look at things.

When you are presented with a spelling error, press tab or down arrow to the first suggestion then either tab or arrow through the list (or stay on the first one if it's what you want).  Once you've found the one you want, press ENTER to change this occurrence, or press alt+down arrow to open a drop-down list where you can choose "Read aloud" (L), "Spell Out" (no quick letter), "Change all" (A) or "Add to Autocorrect" (R).

Annoyingly, from the suggested change, you can't press alt+A to change all, you do have to open the drop-down list and then press A or select that option.

Re: Issues when using NVDA with comments in MS Word

Quentin Christensen

UI Automation doesn't yet have all the features of the previous iAccessible 2 infrastructure.  I know some things work better in one mode than the other, but I'm afraid I don't have a solution to give you all the functionality in the one mode.

On Wed, Aug 14, 2019 at 4:02 AM Akshaya Choudhary <acsociopath@...> wrote:

Thank you, Quentin.
If I turn on UI automation, NVDA starts to announce its entry into a comment section, and Ctrl+Up or Down arrow doesn't jump NVDA to previous or next comment. But, when in UI automation mode, my Alt+Down arrow command stops functioning. I cannot navigate the text by sentence. I tried reassigning a shortcut via customize ribbon commands. I'm partially sighted, so I could see the cursor moving down one sentence, but NVDA wasn't announcing anything.
Also, I have noticed, NVDA doesn't read out selected text in word automatically. I have to apply read selected text command. For example, when I jump to some text in the document via Find and Replace commands, NVDA only announces the first line of the selection automatically. To read the entire selection I have to apply read the selected text command. The issue remains the same while exiting a comment section. When I exit a comment section, the text in the main body, to which a comment is attached, is selected by word. But, NVDA doesn’t announce the selection automatically.

Could you help with this?

Re: PDF and NVDA problem

Quentin Christensen

What PDF reader are you using?  Most browsers will set up their own PDF reader which will often be used when activating a link to a PDF file.  Adobe Reader as a standalone program often works better than these.  There is an option in Adobe reader as to whether it only reads the currently visible pages, or reads all pages.  Setting it to read all pages may take longer to start initially, but be more reliable at reading subsequent pages.

Hi Governor staten

So great to find someone out there on the same journy.  I've been using
the Page builder add on.  so, where do I find the visual editer,
please.  When I edit a page, Page Builder is the default.  I guess I
deactivate it, but then what?

Andrew, I think I know our moderator, Brian V, pretty well by now. I
like him a lot, actually, but, if I'm at all correct, I think he will
very soon ask us to take this to the chat subgroup. I am not
subscribed there & don't intend to, so might I urge you to look at my
signature for a resource where this is definitively on topic instead.

I'm dealing w/a machine that's in imminent hard drive failure & that I
need to send to the manufacturer for warranty service as well as 2
sick kitty cats, + some projects for my clients, but I will do my best
to help, as will the other members of the list. You may also wish to
consult my site:
www.wp4newbs.com
for some WordPress tutorials, in the event they're of interest.

Looking forward to seeing you on list! & just a friendly hello to Brian V.

I find the gutenberg editor a complete mess and a waste of my time.

Its quite bulky even though its supposed to be more accessible now and

For me classic editor works well enough but I am quite basic in my posts.

I have people some ofthem blind that think of the block approach similar
to tetris and enjoy doodling with the advanced systems.

It depends how involved you want.

My blog has a 0spam plugin, a php checker, a healthchecker, a twitter
api, and a couple other things as well as jet pack monitering.

However as I said, I have had the same simple setup for nearly 20 years
now and I really can't see any reason to bother moving forward.

Its not like I am left in a hole, I mean the plugins update and the
wordpress version so its not like I am disadvantaging myself in the least.

Its true you need to install the classical editor plugin but thats fine.

The only change I have made of late is implimenting ssl into the blog.

I mean it was implimented but not inforced and now it is.

Bar removing outdated and broken plugins and themes I havn't bothered
with many differences for the last 20 years and have gradually built
myself up to a level I want.

But then you can say the same thing with winamp.

Its crap and in the past and some stuff doesn't play nice with it and I
know I should use fubar but I don't care to and I have all the plugins I
need and if it becomes to crappy or winamp6 doesn't do what it does I
can use wacup which I may just do anyway at some point.
