Why are you doing all of that routing and clicking? You can use the
normal keyboard navigation just fine. The only tricky part is that once
you get into the view ribbon and then wherever you need to be in that, I
forget and I can't check at the moment, the menu is in two columns. So
you have to arrow right/left to get to the column with "nothing" or
"none" in it as the sort option. This never does seem to stick for me
though.

Pro

1. Turn on screen review
2. Go to the top of the screen shift numpad 7 you should hear file
home share view
3.  Use numpad 6 to get to view and press capslock numpad enter
4. Use numpad 6 to get to group by and press caps lock numpad enter
5. Arrow down to nothing and enter

Your folder grouping should be gone.

Home

1. Turn on screen review
2. Go to the top of the screen shift numpad 7 you should hear file
home share view
3.  Use numpad 6 to get to view and press caps lock numpad enter

Now it gets fun. You need to use numpad 1 or 3 to find a blank space
on the screen. Then you press numpad divide to open the context menu

Arrow up or down until you hear group by and enter

Arrow down to nothing and enter

It should be back to normal.

Re: NVDA in Employment

Sean Murphy

All,

The open source comments are correct with one difference. When a Enterprise uses an open source product like Linux. They will purchase a support contract with the vendor. Such as Red Hat or Ubuntu. Thus is something goes wrong, they have a means of getting it addressed plus there is commercial liability with the open source vendor.

I am using the OS’s as an example. I am not sure if other major well known open source products use the same model or not. I would be surprised if they do not. As how else do they make money? Mozilla Firefox is one company I am not sure how they make money as Firefox is open source.

A commercial company normally wants the ability of holding an vendor to counter ability to quality, addressing issues, ETC. Especially if the product is in a core area of the company. In saying this, there are companies normally small to medium in size which might not necessarily follow this model.

My experience with screen readers in which they adopt falls into the level of support and who they can hold countable to when issues arise. I have not looked and not sure if NVDA provides such a model. If not, then this might be an opportunity.

Be aware, there are some people in the decision path in major organisations who will not look at Open source if there is no service agreement who they can take to town if something goes wrong. If this was not true, then open source office applications would dominate the market, but they don’t for the reasons I have described above.

Good pick up Erik,

I did go through WCAG 2.1 when it came out, I must not have updated this page.  Just reading through https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/new-in-21/ in case I missed anything, there isn't anything there which jumps out as being problematic for NVDA.

I'll update that.

Quentin.

Thanks for pointing out this page.  It may not be detailed enough for some, but I found it a useful overview.

I was interested to see that NVDA is compliant only up to WCAG 2.0AA.  Is there a timeline for 2.1 compliance, or does the new revision not contain enhancements that effect nvda?

Thanks,

Erik

Hi Kelly,

I see the skim reading question has been addressed, and I'll leave others to answer which screen reader they prefer, but in terms of using NVDA in a work environment, we certainly do have a lot of users who use NVDA in that context, both employees and also employers or institutions setting up NVDA in say, university labs, libraries or other public computers.

For anyone looking into this either as an employer or an employee looking for information for their workplace, we have a page at https://www.nvaccess.org/corporate-government/ which answers a lot of common questions (including the security options within NVDA, and addressing the (unfounded) concern around the security of open-source software.

If anyone (or any potential employers) have any lingering concerns, please do get in touch (or get them in touch) with us - info@... is the easiest way - and we'd be happy to discuss any concerns.

Kind regards

Hi, everyone,

I hope this isn't too off-topic. I recently heard an argument that NVDA is bad for blind prospect's in employment because it is the "dumbed down" solution. The person arguing this elaborated, saying that NVDA is not customizable/flexible enough (too chatty"), that it was not able to be scripted as easily, it didn't work well with as much proprietary software, and that it wouldn't be allowed on secure environments due to being open source.

So my question is this: how many people here use NVDA for work, and is there a notable dilerence in level of usability with JAWS?

Also, does NVDA have a skim reading feature like JAWS?

Re: Lags in Thunderbird with NVDA

Gene

Did these problems begin when the new series of Firefox came out?  I don't follow the program to any extent but it may be called Quantum, as the new Firefox series is called quantum.  If so, people might be well served to try preQuantum versions.  Whether the probem is how Thunderbird works or how Thunderbird works with NVDA, whatever the case, I see no reason to update Thunderbird just because updates are available.  E-mail is a very old protocol and I doubt any serious or perhaps even minor new security vulnerabilities will be found.  It is my impression that updates to Thunderbird are to add or refine new features, not related to e-mail.

So it might be useful if someone let the list know what the last preQuantum version is and if people try it.

There may well be a Thunderbird portable so people can easily try it and not have to uninstall their current version and they can use their installed version if they wish and still have the portable version available to evaluate.  Don't forget to set it not to update.

hi, just tried installint the add-on, it gave me an error message saying unable to install add-on. I'm not sure why this might be the case.

Hi all, is there a working add-on for Cakewalk Sonar?

I wish to resume my audio production and recording, and sonar is the best software I've seen thus far. Moreover, it is software I am familiar with and enjoy working with.

any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have over 150 thousand emails so setting it to 000could work, but I would want that to be per mail box so I could read everything ; that comes in. I have over 1000 emails throughout the day in total from lists, comments, junk, etc. Ay way to to limit this in TBird? the lag especially when I'm typing is nuts. I'll start out fine, then lag lag lag and when I hit control v to paste in. a block of text it will send the message without the block o text.

As someone who has over 20000 emails, this is a problem for me. It isn't Thunderbird itself. It's the fact that the amount of emails makes Thunderbird and NVDA unstable.
