Abby Fine Reader is a program used to scan text and save it to a variety of file formats. It can also take PDF image only files and convert them into readable text. And several other operations.
I am running Abby FineReader 11 Professional under the most recent update to Windows ten and the most recent version of NVDA. I just checked and found no issues using the menu system. Rick

Re: NVDA compatibility concern with M.S. office
Quentin Christensen
Hi Pankaj, I must admit I haven't used Office 2007 in a little while, but while track changes works as expected with NVDA, when you press CONTROL+SHIFT+E to turn track changes on or off, it isn't announced. This is a known issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/942 As per my comment on that issue: In office 365, navigating to the "track changes" ribbon item advises whether it is "pressed" or not. Admittedly not efficient, but it works. If "Track changes" has been enabled to be shown in the status bar, pressing NVDA+end to read the status bar will advise the state of track changes along with anything else on the status bar. These can both be seen visually as well. Overall, I agree with the original idea of reporting the status when CONTROL+SHIFT+E (or the local equivalent) is pressed. This does not introduce a new keystroke and at worst, for the user, it is two keypresses - if say it was already on and they turned it off in order to check.. Querying the status bar gives a lot of additional information that may not be needed, and opening the ribbon is complex. Currently the other way to check is to type a character, then left arrow to check whether NVDA reports "inserted". This isn't foolproof, as if track changes was turned on this session, and the focus is in text which had been inserted, NVDA won't report "inserted" as that will not have changed from the surrounding text (and assuming "report editor revisions" is enabled in NVDA's document formatting). Regards Quentin.

The subject gives the full name, Abby Fine Reader,
a commercially available OCR program.
I'm curious what version is being run.
Perhaps the program is less accessible than it used to be but it used to be
quite accessible.

Yes that's right, the screen is black although the mouse pointer is still visible. The screen isn't actually off, as only Windows itself would be able to do that, but as a privacy measure, it certainly works.

Re: Microsoft word: determine bullet shapes with NVDA
Quentin Christensen
You can select all the lists in a document to set them all to the same style. Note that this will select BOTH numbered and bulleted lists: 1. Press control+alt+shift+s to open the Styles toolbar (note that it opens, but doesn't take focus. 2. In your document, move to any list item. 3. Press F6 to move to the Styles toolbar you opened (having moved to a list item means the focus jumps right to "list paragraph" in the styles toolbar). 4. Press the applications key to open the context menu. 5. Down arrow to "Select all 15 instances" (the number will vary) 6. Press SHIFT+F6 to move back to the document 7. Press alt+h, u to open the unnumbered list item. Select the style of bullets you would like.

Re: looking for an raml editor that works with nvda
Luke Davis
It's just an extension of YAML. And as such text. Any text editor should be able to do it basically, and if you want something better, I'm sure you could use Notepad Plus Plus. Writing any kind of YAML should be easy enough for any Python developer's coding environment--indenting is king, after all.

Absolutely Essential Information to Share When You Have an Issue and How to Get It
Lately, on several groups including this one, there are folks requesting help where very little information other than "the problem behavior" is provided. It is really impossible for any assistant to even begin formulating a response unless they know the actual computing environment in which said problem behavior is occurring. It makes no sense to guess about any of these essentials, and they're very easy to get and provide when you have an issue you want help with.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Absolutely Essential Information to Share When You Have a Problem and How to Get It 1. Operating System Details: a. Run the winver command, you can do this using the Windows Key, typing it then hitting enter b. Using Windows Key+R, typing winver in the edit box then hitting enter c. Opening Command Prompt and entering winver. You will then get a pop-up window giving you the Windows Version, Build, and Edition.
2. Screen Reader Version a. NVDA: NVDA+N,H,A b. JAWS: JAWS+J,ALT+H,A
3. Software Version: This will vary to some extent, but for the vast majority using the Help menu, About option will give you this information. Very often ALT+H,A. --Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1903, Build 18362 The color of truth is grey. ~ André Gide

Re: looking for an raml editor that works with nvda
Notepad++ supports YAML, of which RAML is an offshoot. You might be able to get away with that. There could very well be a RAML plug-in, too.

NVDA, Python 3 and NVDA API
Vincent Le Goff <vincent.legoff.srs@...>
Hello everyone,
I'm unsure of where to post this: it's a bit technical but perhaps "not enough". Apologies if you think otherwise. With Python 3 support and NVDA 2019.3, will we have problems using the DLL files to send information to NVDA? I mean the nvdaControllerClient.dll file. Will it need to be rebuilt for the new version? Please, if that's "too technical" and I need to post it to the NVDA development list, could you send me a link or address? I can't find the development list anywhere on the web, at least not an active link or information. Thanks, Vincent

Re: Reading characters phonetically?
hurrikennyandopo ...
Hi
Using the desktop lay out you can do the following on the numeric key pad make sure it is turned off first.
If you want nvda to say the line as you mentioned hit the number 8 3 times.
If it is just the word hit it 3 times make sure you are focused on it as been read out.
If it is just a letter hit the number 2 2 times if i remember right.
Are you aware also if you want the previous word use the number 4 on the numeric key pad then hit the number 5 3 times and if the next word press the number 6 then hit the number 5 3 times. It is the same for 1 previous character and 3 next and 7 previous line and 9 next depending what you want to do.
so 8 is current line 5 is word you are on and 2 is character you are on.
Hopefully it makes sense.

That is fine. But I would still prefer to be able to lock it in phonetics and unlock it when I am done. For example, while reading a long alpha numeric serial number.

I made an error. Its numpad 8 three times and numpad 5 three times. In my original message, I said numpad 8 twice, which is incorrect.
Gene ----- Original Message ----- From: Gene via Groups.Io Sent: Saturday, September 14, 2019 10:02 PM Subject: Re: [nvda] Reading characters phonetically?
It isn't what you want, but I want to make sure you know that numpad 5 three times will read the current word phonetically, and numpad 8 twice will read the current line phonetically. If this has changed at all in more recent versions of NVDA, I hope others will discuss that. While I am confident you already know these commands, I'm presenting them just in case and it may give other users useful information.
Gene ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Saturday, September 14, 2019 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [nvda] Reading characters phonetically?
What I would like to see is an ability to hit numpad 2 and have it stay on phonetics until I no longer need it.

I cannot, and I have never seen anyone who could. The advice is absolutely context specific to Notepad++, which has no Help menu designated as such, and uses the question mark in the menu bar explicitly.
