Well, both advanced type setting and text to speech are enabled for the book, so there goes that theory.

Hi
Once you have set a location, the most frequently used commands are
NVDA+w to read todays forecast
NVDA+Shift+w to read forecast for up to the next 9 days
If you try pressing NVDA+w and you get an error saying the WOE Id is missing, you need to set a location, as follows:
1. Open the NVDA menu using NVDA+n
2. Press the letter p to open the preferences sub-menu
3. Press the letter s until you find “Weather Plus Settings sub-menu s”, and press enter
4. Press the letter m to open the “Set and manage your cities” dialog box.
5. in the edit box, type in your location and postcode in the form CityName, PostCode
6. Tab to and press "test" button.
7 if the location is valid you can hear a beep , tab to the details button and press it to read the location details.
8. you can set the location as the Preset default or simply add to your list using the appropriate buttons
9. Tab through the other controls, checking options you want to include in the forecast for your location.
10. When done, tab to OK and press enter
If you want to learn more about the other features of Weather_Plus you must read the readme.html file you find on the
nvda menu, preferences submenu, weather plus settings, documentation.

Hello all,
I don't see anything describing my situation in recent conversations so am starting a new thread.
I'm going through the NVDA excel training and have found that when following the precise directions in the training, headers are not reading as it says they should.
I have a set of cells with data. I go to the start of the row that I want to use as column headers and press NVDA+shift+c.
NVDA announces A2 set as start of column headers. This is correct.
However that header is not read when I navigate through the table.
If I repeat the set column header hotkey, it says that the cell is already set as the column header. If I press it twice rapidly it says that the column header is removed.
Everything works as it should right up until I actually start navigating the table data and do not hear headers spoken.
I am using NVDA 19.2, MS excel 1908 most recent build.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Am I missing something in settings? I do have the table information checkbox for headers selected in the document settings of NVDA.
If the instructions in the excel tutorial are missing a step it would be good to correct that as well.
Thank you in advance for help troubleshooting this.
Warmly, Sally

Re: THE WEATHER 7.1 ADDON
Hi Steve To view/change synthesizers, the command NVDA+Control+s will open the Select synthesizer dialog. Use NVDA+Control+v to open the speech dialog in which you can select the voice you want. (you can also change synth in this dialog too). The WeatherPlus addon only voices the weather forecast, it doesn’t present it in a dialog box. If you have set the option to put the weather forcast on the clipboard, open a text file and try pasting from clipboard. Cheers Chris

I use the Kindle for PC with NVDA as well as my phone to read Kindle books. I just purchased one which, when I open it, a voice automatically starts reading at a speed that I did not set. It is apparently the tts that goes into action when the Kindle app starts reading something, kind of like what happens when you tell Acrobat reader to read out loud.
In the case of this book, NVDA sees no text at all. All the menus work. But when I do an insert down to start a read all from the selected chapter in the table of contents, nothing is read by NVDA. On my phone using the Voice Over screen reader, this book reads just fine, thank you very much.
I am aware that there are a few books that you can't read with a screen reader, period. But this doesn't seem to be one of those, since it is working fine on my phone. Is there some setting I'm missing that would allow me to use NVDA and my preferred voice and speed over the speech that comes from the Kindle program itself?

Hi,
RE: RS-232 to USB 2.0 cable for a braille display.
Sorry about that, I just realised that I hadn't emailed you the link I promised from Ebay!
Anyhow, this guy sells both the female cable and the male cable. On the back of my braille note it is a male connection, so I bought the female RS-232 to USB 2.0 cable to go on there.
It also came with a driver mini CD which works on my Windows 10 operating system.
I just use it as a braille display, rather than a note taker.
Here is the link
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RS-232-Serial-to-USB-2-0-PL2303-Cable-Adapter-Converter-For-Win-7-8-MAC-OS-AU/143028406760?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I know that when I enquired here at PBTech (in New Zealand) they only had a male RS-232 to USB cable, but apparently I could have bought an adapter for $10 to change it to female.
I have just had another quick look on Ebay for you. It seems that they also sell the RS-232 gender changers if you wanted to adapt the cable you already have. Sometimes though it is just as easy to get the proper cable already done. I have been happy with
the ones that I purchased. They are also nice and long.
Regards,
Gene
Gene from New Zealand, were you able to find that link?
the cable you mentioned that is serial to USb the 2 I brought come with a driver CD that also supports windows 10 that I am using now. It can be brought off ebay for under 10 bucks new zealand with free shipping. I can post a link later on today
to one that I got

Works fine as a printer using standard Windows print commands.

However I wouldn't bother.
The combo boxes are still as inaccessible as ever.
The documentation doesn't have a command list, it will run as far back is 17.03 and as current is last nvda.
The documentation seems to just be the really basic readme pulled from github.
Now this is from a user looking at this briefly.
The addon works.
But it may as well be a pile of crap for all it does to me.
I don't know how to work it, there is basically no documentation except for a small description about what it does.
There isn't even a keyboard shortcut list.
If at all possible, I would like to see more than a learn more button labeled on the brother utilities and the iprint software.
There is a combobox on brother utilities but that and iprint are pritty much no gos as far as it matters.
Luckily unless you need to reinstall the driver you never have to bother with this really.
In fact depending on what you are doing, you may never need to bother about any of the brother software for basic tasks, both printing and scanning.
If your router or something changes you can edit the printer address as long as you have set that up yourself and configure it from windows and the web interfaces.
Hopefully you won't need to do that that often.
The software is a bit hit and miss, but then its not a problem because you don't need to use that software for scanning and printing which is about all we will ever need it for.
Anything else and well who knows.
The software for most brother things are just front ends for standard dumb users that want to use it.
The web interface is accessible enough for most users.
If you know how to configure a router then you will know how to use the web interface of any device like this.
The brother printer is like that.
