Re: Need help getting NVDA to work with Android Studio Application

Jaffar Sidek

Hi.  NVDA is about the best when it comes to providing access with Android Studio.  I have had resonable success in using them for my development work as well as for my own Android and Java projects when using both application and screen reader in tandem, even if NVDA itself is running on 32bit and the Android studio app on my 64bit machine runs on 64 bit as well.  So after you install Android Studio, at the wilcom page, choose configuration, then, choose Appearance and behavior, Arrow down once to Appearance.  Tab to the checkBox that says "Accessibility Panel: Support Screen Readers, Requires Restart".  By default, that CheckBox is Unchecked.  Press the space bar to check it, then tab to the OK button and press enter or space on it.  Now just exit Android Studio and your changes will take effect once you restart the app.  I am not saying the solution is guaranteed to be a hundred percent success, but most tasks you would expect of the Android IDE in question will work satisfactorily enough once you get NVDA going and a few more configuration tweaks will enhance your working experience with it.  Give it a go, and give me a shout if I can be of any help.  Cheers!

  • To activate support for screen readers in Android Studio, click File > Settings > Appearance & Behavior > System Settings, check the Support screen readers checkbox, and then restart Android Studio. This setting ensures that the Android Studio experience is optimized for screen reader users, for example by customizing keyboard navigation. Re: the Screen Curtain NVDA addon

Hi

If you are interested this tutorial will point you in the right directions.

It is a rough draft so there may be spelling mistakes etc etc You will need the latest alfa which has it in but will come out in the next stable release of nvda.

when it is tidied up it will then go onto my website at http://www.accessibilitycentral.net

Rough draft below.

* screen curtain add on now in NVDA 2019.3

From NVDA 2019.3 the screen curtain add on is now intergrated into  NVDA 2019.3
If you want to use this feature so it blacks out your screen so no one can see what you are doing you can asign a gesture to enable it or disable it in NVDA. When NVDA 2019.3 is running press the NVDA key + letter N, when the preferences menu comes up locate the settings menu then the input gestures menu then press the enter key. When the next screen comes up arrow down to the vision branch then arrow right until you hear NvDA say Toggles the state of the screen curtain, either by making the screen black or SHOWING the contents of the screen. If pressed to enable once, the screen curtain is enabled until you restart NVDA. If pressed tree times, it is enabled until you disable it.
Next tab to the add button then press the enter key you will then be given some options. It will then ask you to enter a gesture. for example ALT key + S. A context menu will come up asking you either to add it to the desk top lay out or all layouts. Press the enter key on the option you want then tab to the ok button then press the enter key. Your gesture has now been asigned. When you go to enble it with your short cut key it will say tempory screen curtain enabled to your next restart.  If you do it again it will tell you the screen curtain has been disabled.

I never use the find command forr skype. It's first leter nav for me. Also no issues iwht the short cut keys here in my version of skype which I believe is the latest. I'll have to play with that. Try first leter nav as it should be a lot faster and also add chats and contacts to your favorites as well. This will make for speedier nav.

Re: NVDA Alpha 18747 and Browse Mode

I'm getting very similar exceptions on the latest alpha in browse mode. However, in my case they don't affect the usability - they are being thrown every now and then, but the websites are still working. I cannot tell you precisely when they are thrown, since they seem to be thrown at random moments. I just checked the multiline edit box in gmail - it seems to work fine for me in Chrome.

Hello all,

I took ownership of my Braille display - a Braille Edge 40 - yesterday, and thus far, I've been able to work out how to do most things I want/need to do with it.

However, I'm having trouble inputting German Braille. When, for example, I try to insert "??", i get "`" instead. Braille output, however, is fine. I've had a look at the Braille Table files, and it would appear that dots345 is assigned to at least two things, and I'm assuming this is where the problem is: NVDA (or rather Liblouis) doesn't know which one I want to enter.

Does anyone know where I'm going wrong, or if there is some sort of fix for this problem? Please keep in mind that I only started learning German at the start of the year, and am completely new to German Braille.

Thanks in advance,
Sascha

Hi Bianka,

I set both input and output tables to "German grade 0" in the NVDA Braille settings when experiencing the problem described. I also experimented with grades 1 and 2, and the issues seemed to be, if anything, worse - though that could be that I don't know grade 1/2 German Braille at all.

When set to "German 8 dot computer Braille", I am able to enter ??, ??, ?? and ?? correctly, but I would rather not use computer Braille for now for two reasons: first, a lot of the signs in German computer Braille seem to be very different to those I'm used to, coming from UEB and a little English computer Braille; and second, if/when I go to Germany, or encounter German texts in Braille, I'd like to have some experience with the Braille code under my belt.

Hi,

Answer to all of this: Screen Curtain add-on is hereby deprecated (been deprecated since the release of an alpha snapshot that included screen curtain functionality wit no user interface yet). I’ll declare the add-on as “end of life” shortly after NVDA 2019.3 is released.
