Simple mistake on the syntax it should be

nvda_2019.2.1.exe -install-silent

above is my batch file line to install nvda silently but it doesn’t seem to work and still go through the wizard, anyone have any ideas please?

Is it intended to run NVDA.EXE with this command line from an already installed or portable copy rather than the installer package?

vocaliser issues

Hi.

I said I would reply to the subject about the downtime with atguys and code factory servers.

I assume this will work for eloquence to, reactivating on the same id because of a downed connection and non varification on the server will not mean you lose your seat.

If you are made inactive you need to reenter your licence key again but otherwise things will continue to work as expected.

It did take most of a 24 hour period for a responce, but there was a responce none the less.

Of course if thats not the case, you should contact code factory with your key and id so they can reset it.

I am happy I havn't lost my ids though as that would be a bit annoying.

This is one of the downsides of these online activations, the system goes down or the company goes bank rupt and your purchiced products are dead with that company to.

I don't use any of my high quality synths for anything really important like screen reading fortunately but I do use them for such things as book reading and most importantly gaming.

Knowing the potential issue with online servers going down though, unless you really like it, I wouldn't use anything bar espeak or a free synth for nvda just in case it dropps.

You would need to use narator in win10 to get speech to switch synths.

That does prompt the question, I think we need a key combo, for if this happens and your system is in an unusable state, though I am not sure how to handle this, that a key be assigned to reset nvda's speech preffs either that, or if there is a way for nvda to check status of activations in synth addons, and if those servers drop or something else, nvda will autoswitch to espeak.

This does also bring another potential pitfall into the equation.

This is a laptop, however, if I am offline for any reason, there is a chance my speech synth will not work.

If I am offline and travling the likelyhood I will need to game with headsets is unlikely, but its worth noting on the go, that if you drop the net, your synth will eventually check itself and see if it is active or not and if its unable, it will deactivate itself.

I realise its a necessary evil to stop cracking of the licence and for control, but it does make me wander what would happen if I am away for an extended period of time.

With everyone on win10, the ms voices will be fine, but I'd hate to know what would happen on other windows os types.

I actually had that happen with some software for security on a couple friend's computers.

In 1 case he was able to stop it loading and upgrade the licence.

But in the other case it locked his system and wouldn't allow it to start until he got a new licence.

The net was down at the time, and he couldn't get round it.

A reformat made that issue go away, but he decided to use something else after that.

My point is, using comercial software that phones home periodically if you have an unstable connection or are away for long periods may not be a good idea.

Sadly, unless you use older software there isn't that sort of thing going on.

Happily I am happy with espeak for initial work and could use it for normal tasks.

However, maybe maybe there should be an updated list of free or comercial sapi voices which don't phone home for things especially if something like this happens.

Down times and crashes happen, and in this cases I notified people and they were fixed smartly, but what if it was more than a day or 2 and you needed that software to work.

Re: SPL Addon Question

Hi,
To set them up:

  1. Start Studio.
  2. While focused on Studio, open NVDA menu/Preferences/Input Gestures.
  3. Look for StationPlaylist category and expand it.
  4. Look for SPL Controller and SPL Assistant descriptions and assign commands to it by selecting “Add”.

I’ll add this info to the readme – apologies for not doing so earlier.

Cheers,

Joseph

There is a detailed help file built into the add on itself and you access it by going to nvda menu, then to tools, and manage add ons. in this list, find the SPL add on and you will fine in there the help file. There is also a User Guide found on the main download page for all nvda add ons. Just look for the SPL add on and right near where you can download the add on itself, you will find the user guide which you can download as an HTML file.

Hope this helps.

The way to assign hotkeys for features that are undefined is to go to Input Gestures in the nvda menu and then look for the ones you want and you can enter the desired key combnation there.

Chris,

Thank you for your help. I thought I deleted the NVDA folder in my user profile. Several settings had to be reset, when I reinstalled NVDA the second time. I figured that was proof.

All I know is this. When I followed your instructions, all available commands were back. I could set Alt+F4 to my preference. Of course, I had to re-enter other gestures, too.

Just for fun, I decided to see if I could edit the Gestures file directly. I am an avid Excel user. Therefore, a gesture for F2 is essential. Copying the form of the F4 gesture, I added an entry for F2. It works!

Although I fixed my mistake, I truly believe removing all available gestures from an existing command should not entirely delete the command.

There were many unassigned commands in the original Gestures.ini file.

Again, thank you so very much. I learned a lot today.

Suzy

Hello,

I am using Windows 10 (with all automatic updates installed), NVDA 2019.2.1, and a Braille Edge display. The HIMS driver is installed.

I began editing the Input gestures. I did not realize removing all gestures for a command, E.G. Alt_F4, would entirely remove the command as well.

Now that the command is gone, How do I get it back?

First, I looked through the documentation to see if I could re-enter the Alt+F4 command and found nothing. Next, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling NVDA. Finally, I repeated the uninstall/reinstall process. This time, however, I removed all NVDA folders I could find. These things did not fix the problem.

I can think of two things that might have kept me out of trouble.

1. Notify the user that removing the final option for an Input Gesture will remove the gesture, too.

2. Have a method for creating gestures. In my case, this would allow me to replace the functionality I accidentally deleted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Golden Cursor 3.8, SystrayList 3.7, important notes about these add-ons #addonrelease

Hi everyone,

Golden Cursor 3.8 and SystrayList 3.7 are now available. These releases ship with latest localization updates. As always, they can be found by checking for updates via Add-on Updater add-on or visiting the community add-ons website.

IMPORTANT: please keep the following in mind:

  1. Last version compatible with old NVDA releases: today’s releases are compatible with old NVDA releases, and they are indeed the last releases to be compatible with them. The next release of these add-ons will require NVDA 2019.3 or later; thus, they will come out shortly after NVDA 2019.3 stable version is released.
  2. Penultimate versions from me: a few months ago I announced to the NVDA add-ons community that I’ll be handing over maintenance of Golden Cursor and SystrayList add-ons to the community, and at least for Golden Cursor, at least one person is willing to maintain it. At the moment I’m maintaining these add-ons on behalf of the community as we lost contact with authors of Golden Cursor.
  3. Development releases will be removed: on October 31, 2019, development versions of these two add-ons will be removed from community add-ons website. Those using Add-on Updater to check for development releases of Golden Cursor and SystrayList are advised to switch to stable channel today (to do so, go to NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater, and under “prefer development releases” list, uncheck these two add-ons).

Cheers,

Joseph

The gestures.ini hold the custom gestures set in nvda

It can be found under c:\users\your profile name\appdata\roaming\nvda\gestures.ini

Rename  or remove then restart nvda to reset

code factory down

Hi.

Just tried to deactive eloquence to see what will happen.

It looks like the activation server for code factory is down.

I have purchiced all this stuff via atguys.

Maybe atguys is part of it, atguys is down with an error.

So, right now, no high quality speech.

Lets hope that all gets fixed soon, I want my software to work and I want my favourite tech store to come back.

issues with synths

Hi.

Today I decided to play a game with my high quality sapi synths.

However the code factory vocaliser sapi synth just doesn't work, keeps saying I need to register, however it was working today then stopped suddenly.

Eloqunce still works, but vocaliser doesn't.

Tried to rereg, but it will not connect.

I am assuming that there are server issues but atguys.com seems to be down to, and I can't find any mention of vocaliser sapi on the code factory web page.

I really hope this doesn't become it, I payed good cash for the synth packs, and I use vocaliser extensively.

I have switched everything to ms david till its all solved but for now who knos.

Re: question on html hook for screen readers

Many screen reader share's the same HTML command. There is really no way to tell when a person is using neither Jaws nor NVDA less they are using different synthesizer.
NVDA uses E speak as it's default Synthesizer, and Jaws uses Eloquence as it's default TTS.
I have figured a way to tell whether a person is using Jaws or NVDA. To tell a person is using Jaws or NVDA, I basically hear how each screen reader read's the page.
Jaws and NVDA have different styles of reading.
Thanks for asking.
