I don’t think NVDA can do that because I don’t think Windows knows about the braille display. The only reason Windows doesn’t go to sleep for speech is because it’s running through the sound card. But I think the problem is that Windows does not know about braille devices.

Just throwing an idea here, but shouldn't NVDA be able to reach
Windows to tell it "no, keep running, we're still doing stuff"
when pressing the Braille panning keys? I guess most of us don't
notice, because this is triggered by input devices (keyboards or
mouses) but a Braille display just doesn't count. However, I
would think NVDA could do that fairly easily. Just a guess here,
something worth implementing IMO.

Sure. That's the beauty of these cards. You can set your default to your internal card then hit nvda control s to get to the synth dialogue and choose what card you want to the synth to come through. Hi. I have a surface go. I experienced this issue when it was new, but the sound would disappear entirely. Several software updates fixed this issue. However, it seems to be common with surface devices.

Okay so I can’t claim this is just a NVDA issue because it seems to be both a jaws and NVDA issue since they’re both installed on my computer and both provide similar results. I sent this to the Jaws list as well so hopefully someone will have something.
My computer is only a few months old, replacing another just like still under warranty that crashed, which was bought in early 2018 when it was new. It is a Surface Book Pro, running windows 10 pro, 8 gigs of ram, I don’t remember what sound card off the top of my head.
I have a set of Bose Comfort Bluetooth headphones which can either be plugged in or used Bluetooth but plugged in makes them sound a little better and lengthens the battery time on them. When I have them plugged after an hour or so my screen reader will quit speaking. I unplug them and my computer begins speaking through the speakers. I plug them back in and it’s like the computer doesn’t realize that they are there and continues speaking through the laptop speakers. I have ruled out the headphones being the issue by trying to plug another pair in. At this point I am either stuck moving to Bluetooth or restarting the computer to get it to speak through the headphones.
My guess is that it’s probably a hardware issue but has anyone ever experienced this with a screen reader and if so what was your solution?

Hi, just catching up with mail, but yes You can do this without any problem. You will just have to tell Nvda to use the usb head set, and don't forget to save the settings.

Yes you can tell NVDA to output through a specific card. And you can tell your music playing program to use a specific card as well, and then all other sounds would go to the Windows default. The options for this are in the synthesizer settings for NVDA.

Thank god I use waterfox classic which is using the tried and tested accessible engine then. Maybe firefox/ waterfox current with the quantum engine is not ready for me to bother with just yet.

Yes, I’ve hit this as well. Just make sure the power plan is high performance, or that nothing can cause the computer to sleep. If the screen saver or sleep activates, then this would occur. The bigger problem is that you cannot get braille on UAC or log on screens reliably, and that braille support is fairly crippled without the braille extender add-on for most braille displays as compared to other screen readers. However I’m a primary braille user, though I never use braille input because the translator lag makes touch typing quicker, even though I have to pick up the keyboard to do it. Having to install add-ons for braille seems very silly indeed, as I’d think for those that have displays since a lot of us prefer braille to speech anyway, that seems like a basic feature. I’d say for serious braille reading though, braille Extender is a required install. The key commands are a bit odd compared to other screen readers, but they work well. Incidentally the same problem happens with braille on iOS. If you stop moving your display or something for a few seconds it’ll disconnect. I’m not sure what the best way should be to handle this by default though.

Hi, I was wondering if there might be a better way of doing extensive reading with NVDA and a Braille display that would not cause the whole system to think it's idle. I was recently doing some rather lengthy reading from within the browser, using nothing but the panning keys on my display and not otherwise directly interacting with the system. While I was glad that speech did not make itself heard during this process, I was unexpectedly greeted with the Windows lock screen mid-sentence. I realize that this situation might be somewhat atypical or low-incidence, but I'm nonetheless hoping there's a work-around out there. The issue as I describe it has the potential to be fairly disruptive to those for whom Braille is their primary means of accessing the screen. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Am I the only one using Firefox, the mozilla NVDA addon and experiencing issues when pressing NVDA + A to read the address bar? I've become quite fond of this shortcut but I always get "Address not found". Before reporting to the addon developer I would like to check. It might be something else entirely, if no one has the same issue.
