StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11 #addonrelease

Hi all,

Version 19.11 of StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials (and in case of the latter, October 30th snapshot) are now available. StationPlaylist update brings changes to encoder status command (SPL Controller, E), and Windows 10 App Essentials brings significant changes requiring NVDA 2019.2.1.

IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 10 App Essentials, add-on 19.11 requires NVDA 2019.2.1 or later. This is done to reduce code size and to serve as a stepping stone for a future release that will absolutely require upcoming NVDA 2019.3.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

I use Excel with simple tasks on a regular basis to keep a budget, to track my investments and to import my bank activities.  I haven’t encountered any serious accessibility issues to make the program unusable

Re: Porotection failure issue in PDF

Quentin Christensen

What program are you opening it in?  Most browsers will have their own inbuilt PDF previewer, which may work with varying success on different PDF files.  I recommend downloading the file and opening it in Adobe Reader.

Protection failure sounds like it might have been password protected or something, or maybe the program thinks it was supposed to be password protected, but for some reason that isn't working?

Since you mentioned using Jaws, if you open the file with Jaws running rather than NVDA, do you get the protection failure error?  My guess is that error is something to do with the PDF file or software itself and not related to the screen reader.

Also, are you using any anti-virus software on the computer?  That's the only other thing I can think of that might interfere.

Regards

Quentin.

unfortunately i am not familiar with spreadsheet and dont know exactly
what are the difference between excel and calc.
but libreoffice is free and opensource alternative to microsoft office.
libreoffice developers provided opensource alternative to microsoft

however, like nvda and other opensource products,
you can support libreoffice developers via donation.

Re: NVDA's OCR not working on Facebook.

Sascha Cowley

Hi there,

I haven't experienced the problem you're having, and when I navigate to that link and run OCR I get correct output.

In terms of why just running OCR on the original link to the image doesn't work, it may be that the image isn't being displayed. I use mobile Facebook in Firefox, too, and can visually confirm that, for me, images aren't loaded in newsfeed, but I can't remember if I had to change a setting for it to be that way.

When you say you highlight the image, what do you mean? I can literally just open the link and run OCR, since it is just an image.

Sascha

If I highlight the image, i.e. the line that says "image may contain", and hit NVDA-r, it says it's doing OCR, and I get a blank window, in other words, nothing has been recognized. If I click on that link, and then click on the "view full size" link that comes up, and maximize the window, and do OCR after making sure I'm highlighting part of the image, I get nothing. However, if I *save* the image and run KNFB Reader on it, I get this.

Am I doing something wrong? If not, any ideas why this isn't working? I'm using Windows 10 OCR, I uninstalled the OCR addon when 10's OCR happened but just in case I checked, and it's definitely not installed. I see a *lot* of stuff like this from people, memes with text that is, and it's getting really annoying. At least if I can find out what it's about, I can be annoyed by the actual content or block them or make fun of them or such, as the occasion demands. Re: off topic. best alternative for M S Excel

Quentin Christensen

There are definitely more issues with Open Office and LibreOffice, but feel free to give one or both a try (LibreOffice tends to get updated more often than Open Office, so it depends on whether you like more frequent updates or a more consistent experience).

Which version of NVDA are you using?  We did put some work into making the last couple of versions of NVDA more responsive in Office, particularly 2019.1 and later.

Also, with Excel, if you are trying to open a large spreadsheet, maybe try opening Excel to a blank worksheet first - Excel is very complex, and depending on the contents of any given workbook, it can be very slow in general.

If you can find something specific which causes NVDA to crash to respond sluggishly, I'd be happy to look into it for you, especially if it is something you can give steps to reproduce.

Regards

Quentin.

I find that on the rare occasion I get these that very often hitting ESC closes them.

That being said, using an ad blocker such as uBlock Origin or similar, or a browser like Brave virtually eliminates these from ever being displayed to begin with.

Hi:

I'm a Sound Forge user with Magix. Unfortunately, Magix has this horrible habit
of placing advertisements that overlay part of my screen. I can't find them
with NVDA or Cobra, not on the tray or just alt+tabbing around my open windows.

Can somebody tell me how to find and close these windows?
