Re: Ms Word behaving strangely around pages

Giles Turnbull

Hi Vincent,

yes, it is definitely an MS Word behaviour  rather than an NVDA one.

I find that when a document opens in read-only mode, going into the file menu (ALT+f) and pressing the down arrow to get to the info item and then navigating to and activating the button that allows editing, that action does persist for future re-openings of the same document, assuming you have saved it from the email or download link where it was first opened from.

Documents you have created yourself should not open in read-only mode.

Re: How to use NVDA to Access Inkscape

Bernard,

I can't really be of any help here with NVDA and Inkscape as I have no knowledge of the latter.  I did want to comment on Orca and Inkscape.  If I am recalling correctly, Orca is a Linux/Unix/*nix platform screen reader, and as such has virtually no connection to screen readers that run under Windows.  Even Inkscape itself is a somewhat different animal "under the hood" if there are versions for the *nix environments and Windows.  Comparisons across operating systems is always a fraught proposition.

Using Surface Pro with touchscreen only?

Denis Sariyannis

Hi all,
I just got my new Surface Pro 7 which runs Windows 10 with NVDA as my primary screenreader.
Of course I use the device as a notebook and it works very well. NVDA is extremely responsive, too.
Now I wonder if it would make sense to learn about its touchscreen and to run it also in tablet mode. From what I've seen so far it seems to be quite complicated for example to navigate through a list of files in Windows Explorer or to work with menus.
Furthermore NVDA regularly doesn't recognize gestures correctly. Flicking left and right with two fingers often gets interpreted as a single finger flick etc. The iPad seems to be much more precise when doing that.
Does it make sense to keep trying and maybe even turning on Narrator instead when using it without a keyboard or is it not really usable productively?
Maybe you could give me some hints and tell about your experiences?
Thank you!

Regards
Denis

How to use NVDA to Access Inkscape

Bernard Swart <bsbirding@...>

Good day,

I am unable to get NVDA to work with Inkscape. The Linux reader Orka works with Inkscape, if that is of any relevance.

I am using MS windows 7 32 bit and Inkscape v09.24.

I would appreciate any assistance.

Kind regards.

It might be that you haven't given your browser access to your location - which is fair enough although that might be how the site narrows down your time zone.  To be honest, I'm not sure, I'll check with Derek.

Re: NVDA and firefox

Gene

Firefox has a very good search bookmarks feature.  Issue the command control I to toggle it on and off.  Type part of what you are looking for.  It doesn’t have to be the start of it.  For example, I search for The New York Times with rk ti.  Look at what I wrote caracgter by character.  The period ends the sentence and is not part of the search string.  Note the space in the string.

You can open bookmarks with alt b.

Re: Ms Word behaving strangely around pages

Vincent Le Goff <vincent.legoff.srs@...>

Thanks.  Yeah the way Word opens documents in its read-only mode by default isn't that great for accessibility (or perhaps it's ont, because I use a Braille display).  In any case, actually restarting Word fixed the issue this time.  I do hope it doesn't happen too often, as writing professional reports will get tedious, but in the meantime it seems to be a Word issue more than a NVDA one.

Thanks again,

Vincent

I've noticed many Google results for how to get MS Word to open documents in draft view by default, but I've never seen anybody get it to successfuly do that! It certainly doesn't work for me! The first action I do when opening a Word doc is to go to the View ribbon and switch to draft view.

Hope that helps,

Resource Monitor 19.11A released #addonrelease

Hi all,

Resource monitor 19.11A is now available. This release resolves a critical regression where Windows version information command (NVDA+Shift+number row 6) did not work if one is running NVDA 2019.2.1 or earlier on a 64-bit system.

Cheers,

Joseph

Ms Word behaving strangely around pages

Vincent Le Goff <vincent.legoff.srs@...>

Hi everyone,

For a few days I've realized that Word behaves very strangely.  I can't just press the down arrow or up arrow to go to the next page or previous page, when I'm at the end/bottom of a page.  That sounded like a minor discomfort (I had to activate the application mode and use the arrow keys) but it has become a pain as I can't select text spanning on several pages.  Who's the guilty one?  I don't remember turning on or off any setting in NVDA, but maybe I did.  Though it looks like an annoying setting in Word itself, a setting that was added more recently since I don't think I had this issue.

Does anyone else experience the same behavior and, if so, have you find a workaround?

Microsoft Word: office 365.

NVDA: 2019.2.

Settings: use UI automation in Word: no.

Thanks for your help,

Vincent

Re: Chromeium edge release date announced.

Well I know chromium edge will support chrome extentions, but if it will support google services like cloudprint, then who knows.

Now here's the big question.

What is the differences between google chrome, chromium edge and vanilla chromium.

If not much bar branding, half of me is thinking to avoid all the extra tracking especially since I don't have any google devices right now, to just use pure chromium.

Then again what are the differences.

Resource Monitor 19.11 #addonrelease

Hi everyone,

Resource Monitor 19.11 was released a few hours ago. The biggest change (apart from localization updates) is better detection of Windows 10 Insider Preview builds going forward.

As always the new add-on release can be found on community add-ons website and via Add-on Updater.

Cheers,

Joseph
