hi

Did you not check caps lock as a nvda modifier key?

if not as mentioned you can do the following.

use the Windos key + B to jump down to the notification area. Then use the arrow keys to find nvda. It might be hidden so will need to un hide it.

If your computer has a applications key while on the icon down there hit it a context menu will come up  then arrow to  preferences then settings and once in settings go to keyboard.

if there is no applications keys you can use the shift and f10 key to do the same.

Under the key board settings pick the caps lock check box and check it.

Here I have all 3 done.

UK Computer Braille

Pele West

Hi Everyone

Most of the time I use Uk Computer Braille. I have noticed that some of
the signs are not the same as I am used to. For example:

0 appears as dots 1-2-3-4-5-6 when I type it but changes to dots 3-4-6.
I have always used dots 1-2-3-4-5-6
Plus Sign is dots 2-3-6 which is the same as Less Than. I have always
used dots 2-3-5
@ sign is dots 2-3-4-6. I have always used dots 2-3-4-6-7 since 8-dot
braille was introduced.

There are also lots of hexadecimal symbols for various signs including
bullet and apostrophe.

Is the table still being written, or is there another version that I
have not seen before?

Is there anything to stop me writing a translation table of my own?

Thanks

Pele West

Windows-b brings you to the systemtray where the NVDA icon is located. Just press space on it and the NVDA menu will open.

Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.2, important announcements on Version 1809 support #addonrelease

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.2 is now available. This release adds support for announcing results of tile rearrangements – after arranging Action Center quick actions or Start menu tiles, NVDA will announce new item position or item information. As always, the new update is available via community add-ons website or via Add-on Updater.

IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 10 Version 1809 (October 2018 Update), please read the following to the end:

Support for Version 1809 from Windows 10 App Essentials is coming to a close. Depending on which channel you are subscribed to and NVDA version you’ve got:

  • Development channel: November 12th snapshot onwards (today) will require Version 1903 (build 18362) or later.
  • Development channel optimized for NVDA 2019.3: a snapshot scheduled shortly after NVDACon 2019 will drop support for Version 1809.
  • Stable channel: early 2020.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Firstly, to not update your screenreader, browser or operating system is inherently flawed thinking.

Quite apart from anything else, updating these things plugs up security
holes and exploits that were found, hense the updates in the first place.

While updates have their own inherent bugs, issues, holes and the like,
they are constantly being plugged, patched and fixed when they are
noticed, or insiders, beta testers and developers find or are notified
of them.

There are some arguments for not updating, and while they are valid,
they are not always practical in that you become susceptible to the
aforementioned vulnerabilities.

In the case of windows10, it is not too much of a steep learning curb
from windows7 and in many respects provides you with better performance
and once you get the hang of it, a more efficient way of performing
everyday tasks, as well as tweaking and peaking settings.

Here's where I may come under fire, because it is my personal belief,
that to not update or patch your system, especially in this day and age,
where crackers, and please note the term I used, as opposed to hackers,
are also getting smarter, is the height of folly and stupidity.

I appologise for my harsh words on the subject, but it behooves us as
competent computer operators to insure our system is up to date. even if
we are not all competent computer operators, it is on us to insure that
someone with the requisite knowledge maintains our systems so that they
always run smoothly and efficiently.

Hi
If you take a look at the Welcome screen there is a check box you can use to stop the box appearing every time you start NVDA. Once you have chosen the settings featured in the box, they will remain in force until you change them in the relevant settings dialogs. It's personal choice but I have only ever used the Welcome dialog After installing a new NVDA version. Once used it's not really required again and just adds time to the start up process.

When you hear the 'Loading NVDA' announcement, depending on your machine speed, NVDA will be usable within seconds. When my machine is booting-up for the first time, NVDA starts up with focus on the Desktop. After an NVDA restart, it announces 'Task bar'which is what gains focus when NVDA restarts. If your machine is particularly quick, you may not even hear the 'Loading NVDA' message before NVDA becomes usable. Note: I don't know wat screen area gains focus if you don't have a task bar available, such as when you are in tablet mode. Note also, you do not have to return to the Desktop to restart NVDA, the Desktop icon has a shourtcut associated with it. You can press Control+Alt+n to restart NVDA at any time and when using any app.

As someone else has suggested, crashes whilst browsing may be caused by malware, I am not a FireFox user so cannot comment on the stability of that product.

When trying to install apps, it sounds like your problem could be caused by the User Account Control dialog (UAC) requiring attention before the app installation can proceed. It is a most annoying situation that NVDA does not move focus to the UAC dialog and you have to alt+Tab around your machine until you land on it. When the UAC dialog is in focus press Alt+y to allow the app installer to run.

Cheers
Chris

There is no such thing as the “installer” to turn on. Installer is simply a generic term to describe  the various install programs for whichever application you are trying to install. For example NVDA has an install program to install it on your computer.

Generally these programs can be identified by the existence of the words install or perhaps setup included in their filename or if they have the filetype msi at the end of the file name. Windows will identify these msi files as install file.i

Regarding the first problem, it sounds like you either have too many
background services running, or your system is simply not powerful
enough to run a screen-reader comfortably. Although NVDA is (as far as I
know) one of the most lightweight screen-readers around, unfortunately
all such programs are necessarily somewhat resource intensive. Without
knowing more information (E.G. what version of Windows you're running),
I can't say anything more specific. It could also be an issue of NVDA
addons. Have you recently installed any? Do you have a lot of addons
installed?

Turning to your second issue, have you tried switching to the installer
or UAC window? Sometimes they don't always come to the foreground. It
could also be a matter of Windows Smart Screen. I believe this is
accessible with NVDA, but may need to be switched to as well. Beyond
that, I can't help as I have it disabled.

I am having two different problems which I will like you chas to

The first problem is with the NVDA screen reader itself.
When I start my computer, and the screen reader turns up, and I hear

the key combination alttab twice to get back to NVDA, to hear
"welcome
to NVDA dialog. What exactly is happening here:
Added to that, It is just too slow, when I am working on the
internet. Many times, it crashes when i am on a website, and I have
to go back to the desktop, to start it again.
Sometimes, it take for ever for it to start reading a website. It
sometimes crashes the site, and never gets to read anything. All I
hear is Icon Icon.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? I have NVDA 2019.2 on
my computer.
I preferrably use Mozilla firefox as my browser.
The second issue or problem is this:
When I download a program and I attempt to install it, all I hear is
the program name mentioned, then set up, and nothing gets set up.
I hope this particular problem is well understood.
How can I get to set up these programs when I hear set up, and after
a
long wait, nothing gets set up or installed.
I need help with both issues.
Kind regards.
Ibrahim.

Re: Custom announcements?

mattias

A comment from github:

Currently, announcement of same page links is quite difficult to implement because Firefox does not provide an easy way for us to do this.

How can jaws have it?

It's not currently possible.  We do have an open issue for it here:  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/141 - at least for the same page link part.  Feel free to comment on that if you have more to add that isn't already noted there.

One thing that's in JAWS that I sometimes wish was in NVDA was, when navigating an HTML document like a webpage, JAWS would say, same page link. email link. Is there a way I can change the synthesizer dictionaries or user profiles to say same page link and email link? I'm a writer and, often times, I have absolutely no idea if a hyperlink is leading me to a mailto link or to a submission form. If this can be achieved, would someone be willing to NVDA remote with me? Or tell me how to do it here.

Announcing DictationBridge 1.1 beta 1

Hi everyone,

On behalf of DictationBridge project, I’m delighted to announce the release of DictationBridge add-on 1.1 beta 1. This is identical to version 1.01 (current stable release) with a notable difference: compatibility with NVDA 2019.3 (yes, compatible; subject to change based on NVDA snapshot changes).

Dictationbridge is a free dictation and speech recognition tool – a crowd-funded project that lets you use NVDA via voice commands, as well as assisting you when you use Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) or Dragon for dictation.

Beta download link is:

https://github.com/dictationbridge/dictationBridge/releases/download/1.1beta/DictationBridge-1.1beta1.nvda-addon

If you have any feedback on this software, please don’t hesitate to contact I and other members of the DictationBridge project. Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: NVDACon 2019

Pascal Lambert

Hi Adriani,

This will be the first conference I will attend.  If help is needed, I am ready and willing to volunteer.  I am not an expert on NVDA but I have moderated discussion groups  before on various topics  and I fluently speak English, French, and Spanish and served as a translator in all three languages. I am also a certified mediator and conflict resolution facilitator.  Just let me know how best to serve.

Blessings

Dear NVDA community,

after more than 8 months in which we spent exciting time together to organize the NVDACon 2019, we are almost there!

The conference will start on november 15th 2019 at 21:00 UTC with the opening forum as everyone should already know.

This year’s conference is held for the first time in november. Join us on a very inlightning jurney during which we will find out that NVDA is everywhere!

This year we will be proud to have Google as well as Firefox on our conference. For more details, check the preliminary schedule at

https://www.nvdacon.org/2019-program-and-schedule

In any case, there are plenty of reasons why this NVDACon will be unique!

We will be glad to see you at NVDACon 2019.

Best regards

Adriani
