I am quite new to NVDA and have not played with it very much.

Is there a way, either in NVDA itself or with an addon, to program

Re: accessing embedded video links in Power point slides

Payal Kapoor

hi Quentin,
here is my response to the questions you've asked. thought i'd break
them up into two parts.
Q: When you say link to a video, do you mean a text URL or link on the
slide, or do you mean an embedded video?  When you activate a link it
will open your browser to the specified URL.  An embedded video has a
preview of the video (a still image, similar to that shown on
thumbnails in Youtube etc) with a triangle play button), when you
activate it, the video plays there in the slideshow without opening
another program.
P: There is no real text link, only some image and text saying video.
when coppied on to a word doc, it says hyperlink, but, no real URL. i
am not sure what that would be ccalled. it is however, not an external
source, but links to a folder that has all the relevant videos. i was
told it links there and plays.
essentially, it is an entire presentation made by sighted folk at my
work place that is used for training. i am the first blind person
attempting to use it. it contains two different PPTs for two different
programmes we run. also, it has other training material we access from
within the whole thing.
Q: Activating links is a bit problematic and sounds like what you are
encountering.  To activate a link on a slide, press TAB to move to it
- NVDA reports nothing - and then press ENTER.  Out of curiosity,
since you mentioned trying it with Jaws, did you have trouble with
Jaws as well?  (That would help narrow down the issue - if it works
fine with Jaws, it could be NVDA not responding correctly to the link
- if it doesn't work any better with Jaws then it's more likely to be
PowerPoint not exposing it correctly).
P: I think what you have said about the problem with accessing links
is exactly what i'm having trouble with. however, i noticed that when
the PPT is in slide mode, where more specifically, i activate the edit
mode by pressing enter when in the specific slide, the link appears
alongside the video. arrow down to it, choosing the open hyperlink
option in the applications menu, voila! the video began playing.
i was told that this option cannot be used when making a presentation,
since it is not visually appealing or as good as it is in the
presentation mode.
the presentation mode won't show me a link, and when pressing enter
there brings a prompt saying-no pointer available; choose a pointer.
back to the application menu, but this time, all the pointer options
do nothing.
JAWS did nothing different either. in fact, NVDA allowed me to see the
link; JAWS didn't. that might also be due to the old version of JAWS i
have installed on my laptop.
also, could you tell me how can i copy the contents of the slides, so
i have it in a word doc to refer as notes rather than opepning the PPT
eacj time? i did try the universal copy paste command, but strangely
nothing showed up.
this is definitely a deterrent in being able to run presentations
visually for sighted folk when training. i hope we find a resolution
to it soon enough.
thanks for the help.
Best,
Payal

Re obscured, that is usually reported at design time (ie when you open the
file in PowerPoint but haven't pressed F5 to run the slideshow). and means
that one placeholder is covering another on the slide. It may not mean the
contents of each aren't visible - if you have a one line title, but expand
the size of the placeholder to cover the whole slide, it won't actually
hide any other content but it will announce that it is covering it (and
that the other content is obscured). Overlapping placeholders can also be
used for visual effect, although in general, when creating, it is safest to
try to avoid overlapping unless you are sure of what you are doing.

If you want to activate a link within a placeholder at design time, you can
move to it, then open the context menu and select "Open link".

We do have an issue for the problem with links while running slideshows
here: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7288 Feel free to add any
extra comments on that (if you do, the issue is still present in the latest
alpha).

Try running the "COM Registration fixing tool" which you can find on NVDA's tools menu (NVDA+N, then T, then down arrow to that option and enter).

Otherwise, please let us know exactly WHICH version of Windows / office the machines are running.  A copy of the NVDA log from one of the affected machines might also help (either pasted into the body of a message, or email oflist to info@... with a quick description of the issue).

See: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/wiki/LogFilesAndCrashDumps for info on the log, debug level would be ideal.

Perhaps.  I wonder if this is information Microsoft is presenting.  It doesn't sound like something NVDA would do.

I should correct an error.  I initially said the run dialog presents a list.  It’s a combo box but it evidently is not a standard one.  I don't know how they look but combo boxes don't usually announce items as selected.

This happens because text in the run dialogue is selected by default when the dialogue opens. When you use the up and down arrow keys to move through the history of commands you have entered, the text changes, but the selection remains. Windows simply puts the new text into the text field every time you press up or down, but the text never gets unselected before being changed.

Which is to explain why I hadn’t played with newer versions of NVDA for a good while.  But now, I’m curious about something.  When I am in the run dialog and up and down arrow in the list of things I have run, NVDA says the word instead off and on.  It might say Notepad selected, then if I down arrow, it might say c:\audio selected instead or maybe Wordpad selected instead.  This isn’t consistent and it doesn’t do this in Windows Explorer.  I’m curious why that is.

Well its in alpha right now.

And unless you want to modify manafests to get addons installed which who knows for the older stuff I may just do that and hope they work, I wouldn't jump the  gun right now.

The big reason is its just like to close to the end of the year and  its not quite ready.

At any rate, I usually try to lock down all machines, and don't update things on christmas day.

We have the last big update to windows in the next couple weeks.

Community add-ons and NVDA 2019.3 update: live development snapshots

Hi NVDA users,

As some of you may have noticed, certain builds of various community add-ons will advertise themselves as compatible with or requiring NVDA 2019.3 in any form. This is because several of us are releasing live development snapshots to test how add-ons are doing in the real world. This is typically done via development snapshots, but I know that some stable releases do contain code that will function in old and new NVDA releases.

Answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q. When I try to install an add-on, NVDA says “minimum version: 2019.3”.

Some add-ons (especially recent development snapshots) do require NVDA 2019.3 as they utilize code introduced in this release (not just Python 3).

Q. I have 2019.3 alpha and an add-on update says it is not compatible.

At least one add-on is retiring (or is end of life) as features from it are part of NVDA.

Q. I’m using Add-on Updater. I recently updated to a dev version yet Add-on Updater wants to download an old release.

This is due to add-on files database records. If you run into this, disable update check for affected add-ons (NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater/Do not update add-ons list and check ones you don’t want to get updates).

Q. I’m using NVDA 2019.2.1 with Add-on Updater installed, and when I check for updates, I get an update that isn’t compatible with the version I’m using.

You need to switch to stable channel for the time being (NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater/Prefer development releases, uncheck add-ons that you wish to switch to stable channel).

Q. What if my add-on is not listed n Add-on Updater?

Not all add-on updates can be checked via Add-on Updater (many speech synthesizers are excluded form update checks). The best course of action is contacting add-on authors about compatibility of these add-ons.

Q. I wish to report compatibility status of some add-ons.

Please do so if and only if you have absolutely latest releases and you are confident that the add-on in question is indeed incompatible in some way.

For people using my add-ons: for people using development snapshots of various add-ons, recent and upcoming snapshots will require NVDA 2019.3 in order to function. This is done to test how my add-ons are doing in the real world, and only after going through testing will they graduate to stable channel (this will happen after 2019.3 beta or RC is released).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi all. This is strictly Off topic I know, but please keep my family in the philippines in mind as Typhoon Kamuri with winds of up to
150 MPH, bringing with it rain of up to 16 inches is as of now raging across Luzon Island in the Philippines. The hurricane winds is slowly rising, blowing across the area where we live. and is expected to peak early this morning, philippines time. I am expected to return to my family for christmes as I am currently working in Singapore. I only hope that I can return to my wife and kids with the knowledge that they are safe and sound. To those of you who believe in God, please pray for us. If you don't, keep us in your hopes. Thank you.

Hi,

Try going to addons.nvda-project.org. I think this issue is way beyond add-ons – it is NVDA compatibility mode problem.

Hi,

Yep, this confirms the suspicion that somehow NVDA is told to run in compatibility mode when installed. If removing and reinstalling NVDA from scratch (including via portable copy) doesn’t work, chances are that this might be a registry issue that is way beyond our control. The most effective way to resolve this (apart from changing compatibility mode settings, which might be something not many people are familiar with) is a non-destructive Windows 10 reinstall using Media Creation Tool for Version 1909. Failing that, a reset might be in order (you must reinstall desktop apps including NVDA if you decide to go down this path).
Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

Yep, sounds like the installed copy got compatibility mode set. Can you install this portable copy and see if that makes a difference? To do so, run the portable copy, then to go NVDA menu/Tools/Install. Do not check the box for copying portable config to installed version. Say “yes” when User Account Control (UAC) appears, and when “success” message shows up, press Enter to start the installed copy. Then with the installed copy running, open log viewer and send me the beginning part of the log as a reply, as it’ll confirm if indeed this resolved it or NVDA still set to run in compatibility mode.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

If so, I’m afraid that this is beyond my area. Let’s try one more step:

  1. Download NVDA 2019.2.1.
  2. Do not install – rather, create a portable copy somewhere you can remember.
  3. Start the portable copy.
  4. With the portable copy started, press NVDA+F1 to open log viewer.
  5. Copy and paste the log up to and including the words “NVDA initialized”.

Paste the log fragment as a reply to this email so Quentin and I can figure out exactly what is up. If Windows version line says “10.0.18363”, chances are that it is specific to the installed version; if it says “6.2.9200”, chances are that it is unique to your computer. If so, I advise a non-destructive feature update reinstallation – download Media Creation Tool for 1909, create an ISO, open the resulting ISO file, run setup.exe, and tell the installer to upgrade while keeping everything.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

Ah, this explains it – somehow, NVDA was told to run in compatibility mode. Without intervention, Python 2.7 will assume it is running on Windows 8 when in fact you might be using Windows 10. Can you try the following for me:

  1. Restart with all add-ons disabled.
  2. Listen carefully to which synthesizer is now in use; if it is Espeak, then you will need to reinstall NVDA from scratch; if it is Windows OneCore, chances are that there might be an add-on other than Windows 10 App Essentials and Add-on Updater that messed up NVDA’s manifest information.

If OneCore comes up, restart NVDA with partial add-on functionality. To do so:

  1. Open Add-ons Manager (NVDA menu/Tools/Manage add-ons).
  2. Disable one add-on at a time and restart NVDA after disabling each one. Do not disable Resource Monitor as we need it to check Windows version.
  3. After disabling an add-on and restarting NVDA, press NVDA+Shift+Number row 6 to verify that you are using Windows 10.
  4. As soon as you find that NVDA says Windows 10, thee the just disabled add-on might be to blame.
  5. To verify step 4, enable all add-ons except the offending one and see if NVDA now reports itself as running on Windows 10.

If this does not help, reinstall NVDA from scratch.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

You may need to manually type these lines into Python Console.

Another approach: if you have Resource Monitor (hopefully latest stable release), press NVDA+Shift+Number row 6 and see what NVDA says about Windows version.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

Hmmm, you get “False” when you’ve got 1909… Let’s try this method:

  1. Go back to Python Console (Control+NVDA+Z).
  2. Type the following as exactly as shown (press Enter after each line and listen carefully to what NVDA says):

import winVersion

winVersion.winVersion

winVersion.isWin10()

winVersion.isWin10(version=1607)

winVersion.isWin10(version=1709)

winVersion.isWin10(version=1803)

winVersion.isWin10(version=1809)

NVDA will first announce Windows version information (major, minor, build, platform, service pack), then for each Windows 10 release we have, “True” or “False”.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I did what you suggested and I get a false response.

Hi,

That’s strange. Let’s try:

  1. Open Python Console (Control+NVDA+Z).
  2. Type the following as exactly as I tell you:

import winVersion

winVersion.isWin10(version=1809)

Press Enter after each line. If it says “True”, then there should not be a reason for Windows 10 App Essentials to complain that you’ve got an older Windows release.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

Hi,

Actually, it is compatible with 1809 and later. I’m beginning to wonder if this affects anyone using Add-on Updater, and if this is the case, it isn’t Windows 10 App Essentials at all.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi,

I think I know why – I’ll go ahead and release another version in a few moments. Sorry about that.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I’m sorry to say I am getting the error not compatible with this version of windows.  I am using windows 10 1909 and the latest nvda.

Hi all,

In a few moments Windows 10 App Essentials 19.11.3 will be made available. This release is a localization and documentation update.

A few important notes:

  • Windows 10 20H1 is now formally known as Version 2004. Although Windows 10 App Essentials does support Version 2004, formal support won’t begin until early next year.
  • A version scheduled for early next year will retire support for EdgeHTML-based Microsoft Edge from this add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph
