Re: Changed settings not working

Quentin Christensen

Here is an issue I created two years ago for this exact issue:  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7514

I don't know whether it is exactly the same underlying cause, but it certainly seems the same as what people are encountering now (From what I can tell, it didn't seem too widespread previously, but certainly a number of people have either commented on that issue or mentioned it here in the last day or so).

If anyone can add anything new which might help narrow it down, do please comment on the GitHub issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7514

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: should win 7 users upgrade to 2019.3.1

Quentin Christensen

Hi Mack,

We'd encourage everyone to update to take advantage of the latest bugfixes and improvements.  There are a bunch of things you might find useful, and you can read those in the What's new file: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/releases/2019.3.1/nvda_2019.3.1_changes.html

The main reason you might run into problems with the new version, is if you are using old add-ons which have not been updated.  You can find the official list here: https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/nvdapy3.en.html

You can download NVDA 2019.3.1 and either select "Continue running" or "Create a portable version" if you'd like to try it out before installing over your previous version.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: NVDA with Password

Quentin Christensen

I must admit I hadn't paid attention to this, but I don't think you should hear "blank" when moving to the start of a piece of text.  If you move the caret to the start of a field with text in it, NVDA should report the first character (the character to the right of the caret).  If you are in a password field, NVDA should report "star" instead of the character.

Just testing this now, NVDA 2019.2.1 seems to behave exactly the same for me?  As in, I don't get "blank" at the start of the password field, unless the field itself is blank.

Also, 2019.2.1 is a minor ".1" point release of the second main version of 2019, not February first, although I know Eloquence at least reads it like a date.

Regards

Quentin.

On Wed, Feb 12, 2020 at 3:08 AM Dave Grossoehme <dave@...> wrote:
Good Morning:  With the February first version of NVDA you could hear a
blank if you went past the beginning of the stars in your password
field.  This is the field for when signing into the computer that I'm
referring to.  With the new version you hear nothing and it's like you
can't go any farther back.  This blank help to know when you are at the
beginning of the field.  How does anyone else feel about this?  This
word of blank help me know that I'm at the beginning of the field
especially if a mistake had been made.  This tells me that I can start
again to enter my information.  As it is now with an insiders version of
windows 64 bit addition of 2004 it might be different than anyone else.

Can someone experiencing this please send a DEBUG level NVDA log to me at info@...?

Also, out of curiosity, are the users of these Realtek cards with these problems also experiencing the issue with Pitch change for capitals not working?  (I've had that reported separately and just wondered if they were connected or not)

read web pages - between all the elements of web pages, nvda pauses that

in portable version of nvda, as it is not dependent on the speech
synthesizer, it happens with any of them. We are faced with this
problem, found in our situations one thing in common: we have installed
a sound card from Realtek, and the model maps fairly new. As long as we

this is a temporary solution and it cannot go on forever, because this
version will soon cease to support a Supplement.
Can you please tell how to solve the compatibility issue with nvda

Try turning off forms mode, NVDA key space, then turning it on again, the same command, NVDA space.

But before trying that, try the command NVDA key f5.  That command refreshes what is displayed.  It sounds as though in chrome, the browse mode buffer isn't being refreshed to show when you take an action such as check a check box.

Software is alpine for Windows and Pico, also for Windows.  It is not exactly that the software doesn't work at all, but it only partly works.  For example, in editing a message, I can usually get speech in the text, but there is no braille.  Sometimes while editing, when I move down line by line I get no text, but I do get text moving up line by line after moving down.  In the menu of messages, I can't see the messages at all.

Hi:

I use two fairly old pieces of software:  the Alpine email client; the Pico text
editor.  Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to get this software to work
with NVDA.  It only shows a blank screen for me.

Pico is particularly portable and I'm betting that the two programs have the
same screen issues since they were written by the same source.  I haven't
attached it here but sending it via email should be very simple.

Is there a way I can try to diagnose this?  Or, might somebody be willing to
look at this who knows more about thwat they are doing?

Many thanks.

As somebody who primary uses JAWS, I was just noticing that on:

When I am in Chrome and hit “F” or “e” to move to the next equation, NVDA does this successfully with the Chrome browser, but not Firefox.

Is this a bug with NVDA or with Firefox?
