Joseph Lee's add-ons: important note on Add-on Updater, Python 2 versions to be removed on March 3rd
Hi all,
Two important announcements:
Add-on Updater: as you should know by now, Add-on Updater is compatible with NVDA 2019.2.1 or later, and I did say that a future release will drop support for 2019.2.1. The time has come to do that: Add-on Updater 20.03, scheduled for March 10, 2020, will absolutely require NVDA 2019.3 or later. I have intentionally delayed enforcing this requirement so you can keep add-ons updated before the cut-off date.
Python 2 versions of various add-ons: when you visit community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org), some add-ons developed by me include a link to download older releases compatible with old NVDA releases. These links will retire on March 3, 2020. Going forward, all add-ons by me will require NVDA 2019.3 or later.
Cheers, Joseph

Itunes Library with NVDA
Mary Otten
Hi all,
It has been a long time since I ventured to open iTunes on my pc. I have the latest version, recently installed, and I have the NVDA latest as well. I can tab and find a tree view that is my music library. and I can arrow down through sections like albums, artists, songs etc. But I can't find a way to get from my chosen selection, say artists, into the list of artists, so that I might pick one. I have tried right arrow to no avail. Tab yields nothing useful. Pressing enter starts a song by the first artist in the listing of artists. But I can't find a keyboard-centric way to actually get to that list. Any advice? Mary

Re: nvda command line switches

Yes, NVDA does accept command line options. These are listed in
section 16.1 of the user guide.

nvda command line switches
Hi joseph. I am changing the subject so its a bit more relevant. Is there a list of command line switches for nvda somewhere and what do they do. I wander if like in other things like brousers like you could have something like. nvda/safe. nvda, no addons, default synth, default settings. You could run nvda and fix anything broken that way. What are the actual command switches anyway?

Re: an accessible voice recorder?
Gene
You press r and then space to record. Space
stops recording. Just space starts and stops playing.
Someone said you hear announcements like Mp3 Direct
cut is ready to record. That would require the add-on. You hear
nothing without the add-on. But you can easily find status messages if you
use your screen-reader's review options. For NVDA, move to object
review. Use the command shift numpad 7 to move to the top of the
screen. Move down the screen with numpad 9. When you are recording,
you will find an annoumcement that you are recording. If you leave the
object review where it is and do different things, you will hear different
announcements by using numpad 8 to read the current object.
I haven't used the add-on and I don't know what it
adds to announcements or what you hear.

Subject: Re: [nvda] an accessible voice recorder? 1. With MP3 Direct Cut, press r at the main window to start recording. You may need the lame mp3 encoder for this to work. Exactly I don't remember. 2. I'm sorry for my last e-mail because of incorrect info. Sound recorder is a program included in windows xp. From Windows 7 or higher, the program has been renamed to voice recorder, and you can find it by typing voice at the search box of start menu. Re: planning on writing a guide on browsing the web efficiently with NVDA
Gene
Sinnce I don't know very specifically how you
intend to approach the project, I can't comment much on just what you intend to
do.
I will say that I think the emphasis, at least for
the beginning of any such tutorial should be page navigation. People need
to really have it rubbed in that they are dealing with a document that has
certain conventions. For example, you generally see navigation links on
the top of the page, the text after the navigation links, and other navigation
links, some of them repetitive.
The links list, I veel very strongly, should not be
taught until the person has received enough instruction to thoroughly teadch the
concept of a document with certain conventions. And that means teaching
the search command, not just as something to be used in the great variety of
moving through web pages, but rather as an essential thing in itself. The
search command is one of the most under used and most powerful ways to find
things.
As to the conventions of web pages. the navigation
links are to allow you to efficiently move from one part of the web site to
another. If this concept, a document with conventions, isn't really
emphasized, the person learning may never get a proper understanding of how to
think about web pages.
I could go on about teaching but I'm not sure how
much detail would be appropriate for this list and not the chat list. A
good deal of what you will be teaching is universal in terms of good Windows
screen-readers and web navigation. Commands are very standardized now
among widely used Windows screen-readers so the first question is whether this
should be for NVDA specifically of for blind users in general. Since so
many blind computer users are poor or mediocre Internet users, if you broaden
the description, you may help a lot more people.

Subject: [nvda] planning on writing a guide on browsing the web
efficiently with NVDA Hi everyone. As the subject says, I am planning to write a guide on how to browse the web more efficiently with NVDA. As you all know, NVDA has a ton of single navigation commands to navigate to
different webpage elements, E.G. Landmarks, headings, block quotes, links, the
newly introduced groupings and articles etc. However, there doesn't seem to be
much info in laypersons terms about what these elements are, much less how you
can use them to get around the web quicker. There's loads of dev info on
w3c, but nothing much for your average screen reader user navigating the
web. I would post it on the community wiki as frankly I'm only one woman and don't know everything. So it'd be a community effort much like the JAWS to NVDA guide, which I did most of the initial work on. What do you all think of such a project? Would you find it useful? Also, if a similar thing already exists, I don't want to reinvent the
wheel. All the best, Kara --

Re: NVEA settings not opening
Hi, For everyone experiencing this issue, try:
nvda --disable-addons
This assumes you have NVDA installed. Press Enter after typing the above text and see if you can then open NVDA settings interface. If yes, it might be an add-on or two that’s at fault. Cheers, Joseph

re-appearance of an issue with Speech Viewer?
Hi all, just wondering if anybody else is experienceing problems closing the speech viewer window since updating to 2019.3?
I remember a similar thread back in 2018 (10/19/18 #49366) and I don't know if Alt+F4 (which was suggested in the responses) wasn't working for Rechell Schwartz at that time ... it was for me .., but I am having an Alt+F4 failure with Speech Viewer as of the 2019.3 update. The only way of closing Speech Viewwer down now in NVDA 2019.3 if I have it open, is to go into the Tools menu and deactivating it there ... which is much fiddlier than simply presing Alt+F4 when I'm already in the Speech Viewer. I've checked it on both my laptop and tablet installations and both are behaving the same way. Both are running Win10 and NVDA 2019.3 Does anybody know if this is an intentional change? Thanks, Giles

Hello. Was wondering about Reaper have heard of the program and I guess there is an add on that you can install so you can use it with Reaper is the add on still being worked on? Even though I don't know how to write and read music this Reaper program sounds interesting. On the coolblindtech website someone did a five part series on that back in 2016 am going to listen to it sounds interesting. As far as music and audio production what does everyone use with NVDA to get their stuff done?
