corona software update
Hi all.
This is just a small update in case you either didn't notice, are to sick to notice or to busy shooting zombies in undead-assault. Skype uwp is being replaced by electron according to winaero.com. There will be a few things missing but the latest preview for insiders is electron and it will eventually all be from the store. On one hand we will lose the desktop version but on the other hand, we get a better universal version. Amd and nvidia have drivers that are updated for this month. Its worth noting that if you are offered this that on edge it may crash with netflicks, the changelog said microsoft edge but I am unsure if thats chromium or the old edge. Dropbox has an update. Some windows versions have an update. And according to windows update twitter support for windows 1709 on enterprise and business systems is being pushed back to october this year. More general news on the chat. I technically could put all of this on chat but thought that I should split the technical and non technical parts of this

Hi, Quentin: I had a look at this website using Firefox 74and NVDA 2019.3.1. It feels very accessible but I would need to look at specific teaching/learning materials to know if those would be accessible.

Re: Schoolology
Anyone working in academia, particularly colleges/universities, virtually all of which are using web-based course management software, should make a point of telling the powers that be that a "sandbox system" that allows for accessibility training for individual students needs to exist.
How difficult can it be to create a couple of faux classes, with faux assignments, documents, and the like to allow for practice with the system with screen readers? Yet many are shocked when the idea is suggested. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Power is being told you're not loved and not being destroyed by it. ~ Madonna

It's not that it's not easy to post-process these to OCR them, but when students encounter ones that have never been done that should be done, promptly, for the documents that are used in the central repository, otherwise it remains something that students have to do themselves over and over and over again when it could have been done by "the powers that be" once, and be there ever after. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 Power is being told you're not loved and not being destroyed by it. ~ Madonna

Re: Looking for some NVDA you tube audio tutorials.
Quentin Christensen
Hi Ron, Probably one of the best resources for a Jaws users coming over to NVDA is the Switching from Jaws to NVDA guide. It's a text page rather than video, but has a lot of useful information: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/SwitchingFromJawsToNVDA NV Access also has training material. The Basic Training for NVDA is available in human-read audio which might interest you: https://www.nvaccess.org/product/basic-training-for-nvda-downloadable-audio/ (it's also available in electronic text and hardcopy Braille, from the shop if you prefer: https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/) While we have a YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9Rrmf97-PxqkjbzO6b-VvA it has more general information rather than specifically training material. Kind regards Quentin.

Hi all,
Add-on Updater 20.03.1 is now available. This release resolves an issue reported by an add-on developer where NVDA will appear to do nothing or play error tones when Add-on Updater asks NVDA to check for compatibility of add-on updates. Cheers, Joseph

I don't have that issue, perhaps it's because I have the chars off when I do that. I have forgotten the keystroke, but nvda 1 should get you in the right direction for the toggle, or you can access the qs found in the help menu of nvda for keyboard help. Re: Another NVDA notification
Gene
You can change what is said for a period to some other word.
I’ll let others explain how to change what is said when a ;period is
seen. I haven’t experinented with it enough to describe it well. But
consider that something like period is three sylables and takes longer to
say. Dot is short, only one sylable. I’d much rather have dot
be spoken. You may want to give it a chance, perhaps a number of days and
see if you get used to it.
You can back up the dictionary file or files. Since you probably use
the installed version and I use the portable version, the file or files will be
in a different location.
As far as how to use the dictionary, do you know how to open it? Use
NVDA key n to open the menu. Up or down arrow to preferences and press
enter. You will be in a list of dictionaries you can use. You are on
default didctionary. Press enter to use it. You will now be in a
list of words. If you haven’t added any, there will be none.
Tab to the add button and press the space bar.
In the field you are in, type the word or whatever you want to change the
pronunciation of.
Tab once and type something you think will result in the pronunciation you
want. Use read current line if you want to hear it spoken.
Tab to the ok button and press the space bar. Tab again to another ok
button and press the space bar. You have added a word to the
dictionary. I won’t discuss other aspects of the dictionaries hhere.
I don’t know why you hear pane. But do you read manually line by line
or do you use read to end? If you are reading line by line, try read to
end and see what happens. Also, if you are reading mail in plain text, try
HTML or visa versa to see if that solves the problem.
I use Windows Live Mail and I have no such problem so I can’t discuss what
the cause may be or a solution I have tested.

Hello
once again to all. I noticed when reading my mail, which I'm using the Windows live mail for my mail, I'm noticing at the end of every line NVDA reads pane. And the periods as dots. Is there a way to turn these pane announcements off and also when we need to hear that there's a period at the end of a sentence, that it reads period instead of dot? Also, how can one take advantage of the pronunciations dictionary and can that file be backed up? Many thanks, Ron who'll probably have more NVDA questions for the list to come. Ron Kolesar
Hello to all, from Ron Kolesar.
Noticed the following with NVDA concerning passwords. When typing a password, the first character reads as star like it is suppose to. But anything after the first character of a password reads the letter instead os saying star. How can we fix it so that NVDA will read the entire password being typed in as stars? That's all I have to report at this time.
