I know I am biased because I have done a podcast series on this fantastic app but for me the best accessible ePub Book    reader on a  PC , either paid, or free , remains by a  country mile remains the free Speak On Media Suite.

I am continually amazed it is never ever mentioned as an accessible option for reading ePub books.

Just to mention a few of its features.

Customisation of book reading voice including on the fly adjustment of reading volume and speed  of narration whilst reading a book through hotkeys. I know of no other book reader which does this.

Able to easily navigate through a book by chapter structure ,  headings, 50 lines, paragraph, sentence line word or character.

Ability to easily set markers in text of ePub books and copy and paste this text out of Speak On into a Word Processor.

Alternatively control a and control c will copy the chapter as text.

Ability to get single key press on book location and information.

Ability to resume reading from last position read on any book even if file location has changed.

Bookmark management  - ability to set and delete bookmarks.

It even has a virtual book creation function based on a search term which is incredibly  useful for study purposes.

Suppose you have a long academic book you need to search through to study a topic, you can in Speak On define a search term and Speak On will produce a smaller "virtual eBook” which will consists only of the chapters which contain the key phrase or terms in your defined search pattern. Again I know of no other accessible eBook reader which contains this feature.

Another option is to install Thorium Reader from the Microsoft Store. It supports EPUB books. Bookshare can be set so that it provides downloads in EPUB format.

I wanted to share an open source Q Read alternative called Bookworm. It does not have bookshare support yet, nor does it support links, and headings, or tables, but still. It's a free option. The main website is below, where you can also read the manual.

I'm adding this to the accessible apps github page when I have a moment.

Hi Jesse,

I'm having exactly the same issue. I've already sent an email describing this problem to the address found on the site of the add-on. I suggest you should do the same, this increases the chances that someone might look into it. I've also noticed that as long as the Acapela add-on is installed, the exit sound doesn't play when I unload NVDA. Only the exit sound, not the start-up one. As soon as I uninstall the add-on, the exit sound comes back as it had never been gone. It would be good to let them know if by any chance you notice the same behaviour.

Best regards,

Vlad.

It would be so great if it respected the original formatting!

I explain: it includes line breaks to make it more suitable for low vision users, but it makes you unable to navigate by paragraphs or sentences.

I wish it has an option to choose between the original formatting and suitable for low vision users...

But, off course, it is extremely good to read continuously!

To be clear, I downloaded the engine v1.6.1. All voices are v1.6 as well.

Acapella

Jesse Farquharson

Hello folks.

So, after being hesitant to do so, I finally upgraded my NVDA version to 2019.3.1. I have been staying on 2019.2.1 for the last little while.

I just purchased a license for the Acapella TTS voices, (the full license) as I had used up my trial a few years back. I downloaded the engine, downloaded a lot of voices, then put my license key in and was registered.

However, after trying to switch my synth to Acapella... I'm lost. I hear no speech. I have a braille display hooked up to my computer but it also seems to freeze up. When I hit alt control N, NVDA restarts using Windows OneCore Voices. Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification.

That's precisely the reason I chose to use the Default Dictionary over the Voice Dictionary, as I suspect that this issue crosses multiple OneCore voices and presume that "un-" and "re-" prefixes on verbs will not be read with the hyphen pronounced when doing read-all for any synth.  I could be utterly wrong, and would love to have confirmation or refutation.

It's often a matter of what synths and voices you're using and whether a change to the Default Dictionary screws something up for one (or more) of the synths/voices you use regularly while fixing something only for one.  Trial and error . . .

Hi,

Think of it as default dictionary but active only if the chosen voice from the chosen synthesizer is in use. I do talk about that in my own audio tutorial and have illustrated this with some examples in there.

Cheers,

Joseph

Is the Voice Dictionary in actuality the Synth Dictionary?  The only reason I suggested the Default Dictionary is that I wanted to ensure the change would be honored no matter what voice happened to be in use (and because it's unlikely that the hyphenated form will be pronounced any differently than the unhyphenated in the vast majority of cases).

If Voice does equate to Synth then I need to make a mental note of that.

Re: One Core Synth

Hi,
The short-term solution is adding these weird entries to voice-specific dictionary, not default dictionary (default speech dictionary affects all speech synthesizers). The long-term solution is reminding Microsoft to improve synthesis rules.

One core has other weird quirks. If you read something in 24-hour time notaion, that is after midnigt, it will read is 24:something instead of 0. So that 00:23 will speak 24:23.

This is a fascinating quirk, and I'm getting it too with the Microsoft David voice.  The fix is simple, though, and that's adding an entry for each in the default dictionary, where the pattern is the whole word from the list above, the replacement is the same word but with a hyphen between the "un" and the remainder of it, and the type of match is limited to whole word.  They're all pronounced correctly then.

Heaven only knows why the synth is acting this strangely for those couple of "un" words.

One Core Synth

Chris Mullins

Hi

Is there any way to stop the One Core synthesizer from pre-empting some words.  Below is a list of 6 words:

unchartered

unchecking

unchecky

unchecked

uncharacteristic

unchanging

On my system, the first 3 words speak the word unchanged followed by the remainder of the actual word, even though 2 of the words do not have a as the 5th letter.  The second 3 are spoken correctly.

I’ve checked my NVDA related punctuation dictionaries and it doesn’t appear to b coming from there, so are there any OneCore specific dictionary files which can be adjusted to stop this behaviour?

Cheers

Chris

Re: Facing problem with Excel 2013

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Hello Ramesh,

When you hear unknown, try hitting the left alt key twice in rapid succession. This usually makes NVDA speak the contents of the cell.

You mention pressing the carriage return after editing the cell. Pressing Enter will close the cell, stop editing and drop the cursor down to the next row in the same column.

Try pressing home and see if this moves to the beginning of the edited cell and speaks the first word. If that works, then press right and left arrow keys to move forward and back along the contents of the cell character by character.

Does this help?

All the best,

Cearbhall

Value of headers not readable in Thunderbird

john doe

Hi NVDAs,

With the latest 'next' release of NVDA and the latest release of
Thunderbird, it is not possible anymore to read the value of the header
fields of an e-mail.
For example, when using the tab key to go through the available headers,
NVDA does not speak anything for the value of the date header.

It looks like a regression because it has stopped working a while back
but can not recall when! :)

The same thing is also present with the stable release.

Am I missing something?

Any input is appriciated.
