Hi Sandra When you go into the Ease of Access settings, as well as unchecking the toggle buttons for Sticky, Toggle and Filter keys, ensure you also uncheck the check boxes that allow the shortcut keys for these features to work. When you have done this, tab until you get to the “Home” button and press enter. You should land in the top level Settings dialog, press Alt+f4 to close this. Now you have disabled the shortcut keys for these features, you will not be able to accidentally switch them back on during normal keyboard use. if you ever need to use any of them, you will have to go into the Ease of Access keyboard settings to 1 enable the feature and/or 2 enable the shortcut key that controls the feature. Cheers Chris

Hi Roger There is a shortcut key to switch this feature on and off. Just hold down the Num Lock key until you hear a double beep. If you are switching toggle keys on, the second of the two beeps is higher in pitch and Windows will display a dialog box asking you to confirm if you want Toggle keys on or not. You can just press enter on the yes or no button or read the entire dialog by pressing NVDA+b. When you switch it off, the second note of the double beep descends in pitch and there is no dialog. Cheers Chris

Re: Statement from Joseph Lee regarding NVDA add-ons and Windows XP support requests: no more, period
hi joseph. as i mentioned in my emails, i only need two or three fixed in newer versions of nvda for backporting to the supported versions of nvda on xp. and i promise that my request does not cause nvda crashing or unresponsiveness in any version of windows! my requests are only specific for firefox and contains important fixes which i am sure benefits everyone.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
On 3/23/20, Joseph Lee <joseph.lee22590@gmail.com> wrote: Hello NVDA users and add-on developers,
First, I would like to reiterate how important it is that everyone listen to advice from reputable sources regarding COVID-19, including public health officials recommending folks to exercise social distancing for a while. Even if you do not feel sick, please help others by washing hands, practice social distancing, and monitor the situation regarding the pandemic and community spread. And since the NVDA community is a global movement, please support each other.
Onto the matter at hand: for several days I have received requests about NVDA add-ons and Windows XP support. Requests have included making add-ons compatible with Windows XP again, compatibility issues, and backporting newer NVDA bug fixes and features to users of NVDA 2017.3, the last version compatible with Windows XP.
At the moment there is no community guidance on support for Windows XP, with many people asking others to upgrade to newer Windows releases. But as an individual add-on author and a contributor to NVDA screen reader project, I would like to take this time to make the following personal announcement:
Effective April 15, 2020, if you ask me to do one or more of the following for Windows XP users, the answer you will get is, "sorry, no more, period." These include:
* Making add-ons compatible with Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008 * Fixing compatibility issues and non-working add-ons after you knowingly install newer add-on releases on NVDA 2017.3 or earlier * Backporting features and bug fixes from newer NVDA releases to NVDA 2017.3 * Maintaining a long-term support version of NVDA for Windows XP/Server 2003/Vista/Server 2008 users
Most importantly, I will flatly say "no" if you ask me privately to ask NV Access and/or add-on developers about Windows XP support. Many features introduced in newer NVDA releases cannot be backported for various reasons, including risk of crashing NVDA (grammar error announcement, for example), incompatibility with Python 2 (broader Unicode support, for example), features that will not work properly with XP (screen curtain, for example), support for apps no longer recommended for wider use (outlook Express, for example), and broad changes that alters how add-ons work (speech refactor and multi-category settings dialog, for example). Several add-on authors have indicated reluctance to support XP, and in case of add-ons I'm either maintaining or have passed onto the community, none of them support NVDA 2019.2.1 or earlier, let alone Windows XP and friends.
My personal statement above will not be in effect until April so that you can help others going through COVID-19 and for my statement as an individual developer to sink in. Note that I'm not speaking on behalf of other developers - others have their own policies regarding support for Windows XP. NV Access does provide a download link for NVDA 2017.3, the last version compatible with Windows XP.
I know my statement is a huge blow to many of you. As much as I wanted folks to understand that end of support means end of support, and I understand that many of you cannot afford newer equipment and software releases (including moving to newer Windows releases), I felt it is time to make a bold statement and say "no" to Windows XP support. In the past, I did note on various NVDA forums that my add-ons will not and does not support Windows XP, but didn't announce a statement like this then, hoping that folks will understand the reality at last. But alas, it is time to officially close the doors to Windows XP support from my end - once again, this is an individual developer saying this, not on behalf of the community at large, knowing that others will make statements on their own.
Thank you for understanding.
Cheers,
Joseph

Of course all the functionality of navigation and playback available to Audio Books is available through the Podcasts app including bookmarking, speeding up narration etc.
The main difference compared to other Podcast Readers is that you navigate through all the Podcast episodes via the player window rather than the media library. So if you load the In Touch Podcast pressing the down arrow with the media granularity set will jump you through the episodes available in a Podcast feed.

Hi
This is Isaac Porat the developer of SpeakOn.
Last time I updated SpeakOn was three years ago mainly because it did what I wanted to do for myself as a blind user.
Everything still works and there are no known bugs.
There is however one issue with Tunein, the favourites facility does not work any more. So in practice if you listened to a station, after you shutdown SpeakOn and start it again your last station is still there waiting for you but you can't have your favourites, list this is because Tunein does not support it for the API that SpeakOn is using and there is nothing I can do about it unless someday I store it locally.
To get around this you can use the find facility in SpeakOn Tunein task (app) and find your station in seconds.
Regards
Isaac

Speak On was developed in the UK so the only direct connections it has to download is content from the RNIB eText and Audio Newsagent service and it also connects directly to TuneIn Radio if you have an account with them. However it does have a “Virtual Reader” function which interacts with the automatic eText digital content generated by for Newspapers and Magazines in the UK which makes for a more pleasant reading experience. If Newsline produces material in ePub2 format then it may be worth importing the content into Speak On and try reading it with the RNIB eText Newsagent app anyway to see if this provides a good experience. If you wanted to do this you would need to first of all add the RNIB eText app from the add plugins section of the Tools menu and then place your Newsline content, assuming it is epPub2 into the Current Reading directory under the RNIB etect directory under My Speak On media folder.
Of course you can also read the ePub also using Speak On’s eBook function – one of the worst decisions Isaac took was to name this app Text Publications which disguises it utility as an eBook reader.

The only thing I could find about speak on is the below website? The last update was 2016. Is there a newer version I'm missing? It seems like it's a media player rather than a book reader so if anybody has an updated link, put it in the thread.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say, podcast player rather than

Asunto: Re: [nvda] Podcast Reader
I am a little embarrassed to say this after extolling its ability as an
eBook reader but Speak On is also a very good Podcast reader as far as I
am concerned. It has 4 main Podcast functions.
1. Stream or download any Podcast / downloadable radio show
available from TuneIn Radio.
2. The main Podcast App also has library of categorised Podcasts to
search through.
3. there is a specialist separate Podcast app which can be
downloaded via the tools and plugins menu which covers exclusively
Podcasts concentrating on VI Issues.
4. You can also of course import normal OPML files to import or export
your lists of Podcasts as in any other Podcast reader.
Of course all the functionality of navigation and playback available to
Audio Books is available through the Podcasts app including bookmarking,
speeding up narration etc.
The main difference compared to other Podcast Readers is that you
navigate through all the Podcast episodes via the player window rather
than the media library.
So if you load the In Touch Podcast pressing the down arrow with the
media granularity set will jump you through the episodes available
in a Podcast feed.
I have not as yet done a Podcast demonstrating Speak On and
Podcasts but this will be done over the next few weeks during the lock
down.

Hi Gene
This is Isaac the developer of both SpeakOn and SpeechHub
Yes, I developed both add-ons for SpeakOn and SpeechHub for the latest NVDA version 2019.3.1
I operate both here on my computer and a couple of testers found no problem with these.
I want to do a bit more testing, as you have tested for me before both SpeechHub and SpeakOn you are welcome to write to me off list and I shall let you know how to obtain these add-ons for testing.
Regards
Isaac

Speak On is self-voicing much like Kurzweil so you would not use a Screenreader with it as it is controlled just as if you were using a screenreader.
Isaac told me that he has updated the NVDA and Speech Player addons to be compatible with the latest version of NVDA but I don’t think they have been published yet.
As I understand it the NVDA addon simply mutes NVDA whilst Speak On is in Focus

David, the NFB content is Daisy, which xml files.
Can my screen reader be used in this program?

Speak On was developed in the UK so the only direct connections it has to download is content from the RNIB eText and Audio Newsagent service and it also connects directly to TuneIn Radio if you have an account with them. However it does have a “Virtual Readerfunction which interacts with the automatic eText digital content generated by for Newspapers and Magazines in the UK which makes for a more pleasant reading experience.
Of course you can also read the ePub also using Speak On’s eBook function – oone of the worst decisions Isaac took was to name this app Text Publications which disguises it utility as an eBook reader.

So it cannot, as far as I am aware connect Sent from Mail <https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=550986> for Windows 10

Also, can the program use my screen reader?

My actual Podcasts on Speak On are being distributed by Talking Computers on a monthly basis and will appear on the Speak On website a month later but you can find all the recordings below on SendSpace links which will hopefully not be an issue. If there is an issue then I will try and put them also on Open drive.
The main Speak On app is being continuously maintained by Isaac the Program developer though he has no intentions to do major revisions of the app.
The series is not complete as there will be further Podcasts on the RNIB Daisy magazine Service, using the Podcasts app and the Music app to follow.
I actually intend to replace and re-record the eBook Podcasts as half - way through the volume increases which is a little distracting.

Joseph Lee's add-ons and NVDA 2020.1: compatible
Hi all, I’m delighted to announce that all my add-ons are NVDA 2020.1 ready, No special modifications are required for all add-ons except StationPlaylist which has been modified to support changes introduced in upcoming NVDA release. Speaking of Joseph Lee’s add-ons: version 20.04 of my add-ons (except Object location Tones) will be released in a few days. Most add-ons include localization updates, with several of them bringing various changes, both small and large. For example, Add-on Updater 20.04 will (finally) resolve an issue reported by users where “check for add-on updates” item didn’t show up in NVDA Tools menu, and StationPlaylist 20.04 will introduce a dedicated dialog to manage broadcast profiles. I’ll announce more details the day these add-on releases are made. Cheers, Joseph
