Re: Bluetooth hearing aid lag on Windows 10 with NVDA.

You don't have to worry about turning Bluetooth audio off - this add-on monitors if NVDA is active, and by active I mean speaking anything. Once NVDA is inactive for 1 minute or so, it will stop playing silence to conserve the battery life of your hearing aid. Not sure whether the same would apply to silencio.

When nvda keeps turning itself on any time another program opens or shuts

Hugin

This started back in January when I had to install nvda on 2 new computers. I use it but my husband is only legally blind so can see enough not to use a screen reader. Anytime he's using the computer for something he turns nvda off and if another program opens or closes, completely unrelated it will start up and we need to shut it down again. Like today when windows is wanting crap and he has to fuss with it's maddening.LOL. So as it seems to be a new thing, at least for me, is there a setting called don't start up until I start you up? LOL

When you say "the addon for Bluetooth to stay connected, ", do you mean Bluetooth Audio add-on?

You're describing the beginning of every chunk of audio gets cut off, that is indeed indicative of your hearing aid entering standby mode too quickly. There is a program called Silencio, that you might want to try, it is similar to Bluetooth audio add-on, in the sense that it just plays silence and prevents bluetooth devices from entring stand by. You might want to try to see if it works.

problem with Arabic multi-cell characters when inputting braille with NVDA

Ikrami

Hi, so I use my braille display to type using nvda. I choose the Arabic grade1 table as an input and output. Must of things works good, except for the symbols that contain more than one cell. For example, we have the Arabic comma is dot five, and the colon is dot five followed by dot two in the next cell.

When I press dot five, it stypes comma, but when I follow it with dot 2, nvda says “unsupported input”, and does nothing. The expected behavior is that it should translate it to a colon sign.

My understanding that if a symbol consists of more than one cell, and the first part of this symbol is identified as another symbol in its own, NVDA understands only the first part of it and ignores the second part.

This also applies to the Arabic grade2 table. Most of the abbreviations give this “unsupported input” message when being written, although they are being displayed properly.

I am using the latest nvda release.

I hope you can help me in this regard.

Thanks

Hi Chris

A few things to add to David's answers...

1. To reduce the voice interraptions,  From the manager press:

Global settings > Messages settings

A task (SpeakOn dialogue) appears

There are two settings for messages and control spoken choose the ones to suit you.

I recommend the current setting until you are familiar with the program.

2. It does require admin privileges and does the UAC comes up. If I continue to develop the program in the future this is something I would consider doing something about.

Personally I find the UAC a waste of time because when enabled, it came up so many times that I got to automatically acknowledge it which defeated its purpose in the first place so I disabled it permanently probably over five years ago, I use Windows defender which does a great job, and I am careful with security and update Windows and apps etc and so far I had no issues. Of course this is my opinion and people might prefer to use the UAC.

I can answer the second question – yes whilst the Audio Book player is in focus go to menu and then settings and there, there is a toggle to speak track information which you can turn to on or off.

In relation to refreshing the folder path within Speak On, ,I don’t think you can or at least I have not found a way, however I have got used to habitually shutting down speak on rather than alt tabbing away from it before adding content. So this solves this issue for me. It is not a problem for me personally as on my system Speak On loads pretty quickly and the automatic bookmarking feature means that I am always where I was last reading when I return to an app anyway.

Hi Isaac
I saw a message on the list re SpeakOn and have downloaded it and I am extremely impressed with it’s functionality and ease of use.  There are a few minor annoyances which you may or may not be able to do anything about but I thought I would seek your opinion regarding them.

Firstly, I am using Windows 10 and set up the desktop shortcut to run as administrator to avoid the UAC allow this software etc window but unfortunately, 3 of the 4 levels of UAC  security trigger a different UAC message “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?”.  The only way around this is to turn UAC security off altogether, which also obviates the “run as admin” requirement.  Is it possible to get the software certificated in some way to avoid this message?

Secondly, when reading an audio book, is there any way to suppress the announcement of the file names as it moves through the files making up the book?  Similarly when playing Music tracks in an album or playlist?

Thirdly, this is a last minute discovery, so may be covered in the manual and I have missed it.  When trying to add an RNIB flash drive containing 3 Daisy books to the Audio Book library, I had to insert another folder level via windows to the flash drive to allow me to select it and add it’s contents to the Audio Book library.  When I restarted the task and initiated the Add/Library Audio Books Remove folder locations from the Settings sub-menu, The flash drive folder structure was the same as it was before I inserted the additional folder level.  Is there a way to refresh the folder tree view without having  to restart the app?

Cheers

Hi

More information on SpeakOn based on questions on this thread and others.

SpeakOn home page is at:

http://www.speakon.org.uk/SpeakOn.html

You will find information on the media types its support, links to the
docs and mailing list.

The tutorials produced by David Griffith recently found somewhere else
on this thread are excellent.

Although the latest version was released in 2016 with one minor
exception everything works and there are know known bugs.

SpeakOn supports English only and does not support Braille.

It does not support PDF either.

It is recommended by RNIB in the UK for reading their audio books in
Daisy; SpeakOn supports Daisy 2 used mostly (I think) in Europe. It does
not support Daisy 3 in the US.

Being developed in the UK it supports RNIB newspapers and magazines in
test (epub) and audio.

It supports the epub format generally.

It does not support DRM as used mostly in the US

The NVDA SpeakOn add-on is not necessary to use it but makes sure that
NVDA does not speakOn when SpeakOn has the focus; it does not speak much
anyway and I shall release an updated version of this add-on soon to
this list.

Customisation of book reading voice including on the fly adjustment
of reading volume and speed  of narration whilst reading a book

Able to easily navigate through a book by chapter structure ,

Ability to easily set markers in text of ePub books and copy and

Ability to get single key press on book location and information.

Ability to resume reading from last position read on any book even

Bookmark management  - ability to set and delete bookmarks.

It even has a virtual book creation function based on a search term

Suppose you have a long academic book you need to search through to
