Hi

What version of nvda are you using?

I just looked on my version of nvda 2019.3.1 and it shows the nvda updater program there.

May be go up to the website and grab the latest version of it.

Are you using nvda 2019.2? as I know at one point it stopped or disappeared from the menu so grabbing the latest version fixed it.

Then you had to upgrade your version of nvda.

But now I think the minimum is 2019.3

Joseph lee would know more of what is required.

Re: COVID-19 Solutions Fund for open source developers.

It’s not likely they would apply for this since the open source software/hardware has to directly combat affects of the virus, or help in relief efforts. Providing the blog’s examples of an open source vent, software or online platform that connects the open source project to an at risk group, or healthcare platform, NVDA does nothing of the sort. Besides, the project must already be a matured project which turned its focus to virus relief efforts.

I was thinking NV Access could apply for this as a whole? If not, then maybe some developers. Your code has to be open source, though. The below blog post explains more.

NVDA has Acquired a new, and somewhat annoying Feature

Hello, everyone. I'm using Thunderbird 75 beta 2 64 bit with the latest NVDA Alpha. As of a few days ago, the reading of certain processes in Thunderbird is being done. However, it is way too verbose. Sometimes it reads pieces of text and letters. I wish I knew what this was and how to modify it, or turn it off.

This can get tricky for all of us, but there's a simple way to do this time math when you need to.

If something is expressed in UTC or GMT (which are the equivalent) and you want to know what time it would be locally, open the time & date settings on your computer.  If your time zone is UTC minus so many hours, then you ADD that number of hours to UTC/GMT to get it in your local time.  If your UTC is plus so many hours, you SUBTRACT that number of hours to get your local time.

Also, every web search engine I know of will do time math, so entering a search term of the form, 12:30 PDT to EDT, where you substitute your actual time zone for EDT in the example will get you your local time, typically presented as its own separate item in 24 hour time before the web search results for all the time converters that do the math, too.

The classes are occurring at 19:30 GMT, so anyone can use a search term of the form, 19:30 GMT to {insert local time zone here}, as well.

Re: Microsoft Office 365 gets money in excel and more.

Holy cheesecake. I didn't notice the web version had so many useless landmarks and lists. Sorry about that! Anyway, the below is the text of the article, copy and pasted.

Gif: Microsoft Microsoft has given its suite of Office applications a major update and I’m worried because they actually seem useful for regular people. Raise your hand if you’ve ever tracked your monthly budget by copy and pasting your bank account transactions into Excel. Raise your hand if you hate typing formulas into Excel. Or raise it if you wish Word be as good as Grammarly or if Outlook was a little more like Google Calendar. Today, Microsoft announced that starting Tuesday, April 21, Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal subscriptions will be renamed to Microsoft 365 Family and Microsoft 365 Personal, respectively, for the same monthly subscription price: $7 a month for the personal tier and $10 a month for the family tier. If you’re a current subscriber, your account will automatically roll over on April 21, and you’ll have access to all the new features. There will also be major changes to its Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications that should hopefully make them equally as friendly for personal and family use as they are for work. Two new applications will be available later this year as well: Family Safety and Teams for Consumers. But first, let’s talk about Excel, because it’s not often a person gets excited about spreadsheet software but here I am. It’s mainly down to Money, an Excel feature that supposedly connects to any or all of your online bank and credit card accounts, and imports your transaction history into an auto-organized spreadsheet—from any of 10,000 supported banking institutions. From that data, you can generate “monthly snapshots” (complete with pie charts) of your spending habits. Think of it like Mint or another personal finance tracking service, but built into your Microsoft subscription. Money isn’t available right now in Excel, but it will be in the coming months in the U.S. first, and hopefully will not involve you handing Microsoft all of you’re financial data. Microsoft has attempted to make Excel more friendly to non-business users in other ways too. It will now have over 100 new data types which include “food, movies, places, chemistry, and even Pokémon.” If you type ‘Pikachu,’ into a cell, this new feature will auto-generate Pikachu’s stats, like strengths and weaknesses, into a chart. Essentially, Excel will be able to extrapolate data in real-time from the internet into what Microsoft calls a smart template. These two features will be available to Office Insiders this spring and to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in the U.S. in the coming months. Moving on to Word, Microsoft (finally) added the ability to give you comprehensive edits on whatever you write, similar to the way Grammarly works. Microsoft Editor will now it offers suggestions beyond simple spelling and grammar corrections: acronyms, clarity, formality, and even inclusiveness. For instance, if you write ‘mailman,’ it should suggest something like ‘mail carrier.’ Microsoft claims it even offers rewrite suggestions of entire sentences. I doubt it will be helpful with purposeful misspellings, unique syntax, and non-standard grammar, but for getting rid of excess ‘verys’ and ‘justs?’ Sure. There’s also a “similarity checker,” which will tell you if your text is too close to your source material and help you cite your sources correctly. Editor will also be available in Outlook and as a stand-alone browser extension for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, too. According to Microsoft, the new Editor will start rolling out today, with general availability by the end of April. You will have to manually download the browser extension, though.

Gif: Microsoft Other new features to Microsoft’s fleet of apps include a “Presenter Coach” in PowerPoint that will tell you if you are talking too slow, too fast, too monotone, or using too many ums. PowerPoint will also receive a new template option called “Design Ideas” that can take the information on a current slide and format it into a pre-made layout. Some of those layouts also have animated backgrounds. “We’re providing Microsoft 365 subscribers with exclusive access to over 8,000 beautiful images and 175 looping videos from Getty Images, plus 300 new fonts and 2,800 new icons to create high-impact and visually appealing documents. And you can use all this new content in Word and Excel too,” says Microsoft in the blog announcing all the new features. In Outlook, Microsoft is adding the ability to link your personal calendar to your work calendar—something that Google has had for a while—but with Google’s calendar you have to manually give access for someone to see your personal calendar. And even then they can see every detail you include in those personal appointments. The new outlook feature allows you to “show your real availability in your work account, while still maintaining privacy around the details of personal appointments and business meetings.”

Gif: Microsoft The Edge browser is also getting some new features, including Collections, Vertical Tabs, and Smart Copy. Microsoft’s new apps, Family Safety and Teams for Consumers, which are rolling out later this year, introduce a host of new features to help parents manage their kids’ screen time, and organize trips and other activities with family members. The Family Safety app is something that my parents probably wish they had back when I was in high school. It lets parents set time limits across all the devices their kids use (PC, Xbox, phone, etc.), set alerts when family members arrive/leave their current location, the number of times they pick up their phone while driving and the average driving speed, as well as set age limits so they can only download specific apps, games, etc. as parents deem appropriate for their kids. Microsoft also says it will not share data with your car insurance company. If all this sounds like an invasion of your privacy, don’t worry—Microsoft says you will have access to your own stats and will be able to opt out of sharing that information with your parents—if your parents say that’s okay. A limited preview of the app across iOS and Android will be available in the coming months. Finally, to hop on the new trend of group video calls, Microsoft is rolling out a consumer version of its Teams app, called...Teams for Consumers. Teams is Microsoft’s attempt to take on Slack, and the version for consumers it’ll do the same, allowing you to chat in groups, make video calls, share stuff and assign tasks...to you family? A roommate who won’t clean the dishes? Unsuspecting friends who download Teams for Consumers because you beg them too? Who knows, but whomever its for, Teams for Consumers will be coming in preview to the Microsoft Teams mobile app in the coming months. Microsoft Office 365 gets money in excel and more.

The article below explains new updates coming to excel and word. I'm posting this here because I want insiders to report accessibility bugs when they can. The title is extremely eye rolling, particularly because I actually like Microsoft's offerings, for the most part, but whatever. Insiders, test these features when you can and report accessibility bugs.

I hope it works. My answer was premised on the hope that when you set
another screen-reader to run at the login screen, it will not run, as
NVDA does, when you open or close programs. I hope that is the case
but we'll have to see.

Re: When nvda keeps turning itself on any time another program opens or shuts

Hi,

So, you want to talk to an NVDA programmer? No need to write to us directly – I am an NVDA programmer/code contributor.

Based on the discussion I’m seeing in front of me, we need to clarify a few things before we continue:

  • NVDA startup options: there are two options found under NVDA Settings/General category. The first one named “Automatically start NVDA after I log on to Windows” will ask NVDA to come up when you log into Windows. The second option named “Use NVDA on the Windows logon screen (requires administrator privileges)" Will ask NVDA to come up in User Account Control, logon window and other secure screens. The option you should be looking at is the second one, not the first one.
  • Is the secure screen copy of NVDA a separate NVDA version: yes and no. When you press Control+Alt+Delete to invoke Windows sign-in dialog or User Account Control shows up, the same NVDA executable will run but will pull in settings from system configuration. In short, the regular NVDA will be suspended as long as a secure screen is up (describing how this is possible will require a detailed discussion of certain NVDA and Windows internals; I’ll answer it if you all want me to describe it).

In order to better diagnose this, I and other developers will need detailed steps as to how to reproduce this, if it is reproducible at all. If the problem is reproducible (say, you exit NVDA, someone uses something, and NVDA somehow starts up without you doing anything), then it might be possible to do some more investigations (including NVDA Remote session). Once we know that the problem is reproducible, the next course of action is looking at add-ons you’ve got and disabling add-ons to see if that makes a difference. Failing that, reading a debug log is in order, followed by non-destructive and/or destructive settings reset (non-destructive: press Control+NvDA+R three times, use NVDA for a while, then press Control+NVDA+R once to reload settings; destructive: delete NVDA settings file).

On the other hand, if the problem isn’t reproducible or inconsistent as to when it occurs, there’s really nothing I and other NVDA Developers can do except to say that this issue is unique to your system. IN the past, users contacted NVDA developers to say that they are experiencing problems, which were later classified as unique to a situation when we failed to reproduce problems reliably.

As much as I wish to provide a troubleshooting session via Skype and NVDA Remote add-on (for free), there are other things I need to prioritize – I’m in college, so school takes priority. But if it does come down to providing second or third level technical support alongside NV Access people (NV Access does offer paid tech support, by the way), I’ll think about what we can do.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi Brian,Gene/ and list

I do not have jaws and will not use jaws and as Brian said won't fix the issue really in a logical way but I appreciate the thought. I am asking if anyone has am nvda contact for programmers or anyone else I an ask about this. Because we've installed it before, never an issue. Not on windows 10, though. Not sure what made you think I had the same software on all computers, Brian, I am sorry if I indicated as much as it isn't the case. Also my sister's comp, comp number 4 doing this is not in my home. She is however in my city and she jokingly suggests that it's a *incert name of our city* problem and no one will understand. HAHA. Really though I hope we're just doing something wrong though I don't see what as again have used nvda for years without this happening. Each installation of windows 10 we have came from different people, the computers came from different places. My husband installed two one of ours, and my sister's, but those computers are entirely different, different models, one is a desk and one a lap top etc. But other 2 are having the same issue, one was done by Boundless, and one by a local computer guy. Again starting to feel it's just and our paranormal weirdness though why the ghoulies care about nvda is beyond me.

I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed.
I get along with the voices inside of my head.

Re: When nvda keeps turning itself on any time another program opens or shuts

Well there are 2 options.
1, start nvda at the windows logon screen.
This is usefull if you have more than 1 account, keep this off on a
public computer if if you don't want nvda starting at login.
Note, its going to yell out secure screens at you reguardless but
there is usually a delay of a few seconds.
Just hit alty when you hear the prompt and its not a problem.
You want the option that says start nvda after windows login or
something like it and it will work.
The keyword is after here and its what I use.

Hi Brian,Gene/ and list

I do not have jaws and will not use jaws and as Brian said won't fix the
issue really in a logical way but I appreciate the thought. I am asking if
anyone has am nvda contact for programmers or anyone else I an ask about
this. Because we've installed it before, never an issue. Not on windows 10,
though. Not sure what made you think I had the same software on all
computers, Brian, I am sorry if I indicated as much as it isn't the case.
Also my sister's comp, comp number 4 doing this is not in my home. She is
however in my city and she jokingly suggests that it's a *incert name of our
city* problem and no one will understand. HAHA. Really though I hope we're
just doing something wrong though I don't see what as again have used nvda
for years without this happening. Each installation of windows 10 we have
came from different people, the computers came from different places. My
husband installed two one of ours, and my sister's, but those computers are
entirely different, different models, one is a desk and one a lap top etc.
