virtual machine software and nvda

Hi.

A lot of people have been talking about virtual machine software, and I have been having half a mind to broaden my mind on some more of it also to advise what needs extra addons etc.

Firstly, vmware.

I have used vmware a lot and have brought the workstation so I can do a load of extra vms from xp up since I am interested in it.

While most things in player work, and the menus in workstation, the biggest thing is the fields.

They speak when filled but not when you type content in them.

Lists in workstation do not always read and there are probably a few unlabeled buttons.

Due to the hypervisor guard not being compatible I will not be trying hyper v, but I am thinking about virtualbox and kemu, kemu because you can emulate dirfferent machines and virtualbox because its free and vmware does not always play nice with everything like some linux distributions.

thunderbird status update

Hi all.

Just for all those not subscribing to the bug, its moved to the beta branch today.

Lets hope this means we will be getting a release update soon.

Re: beeps

Hi Eilana,

Are you using NVDA 2020.1 beta 1?  If so, that will play a sound when an error is written to the log.  Often NVDA will try something else and overcome whatever the error is so the end user won't notice, except in these pre-release versions (alpha and beta versions).

If it is a sound increasing in pitch, then that is played while a progress bar loads.  You can toggle that directly with NVDA+u, or from NVDA's object presentation settings (NVDA+control+o, then tab through).

Otherwise, if it's an add-on, I'll leave it to others to advise.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: NVDA 2020 Beta Version

Hi Brice,

I'm not aware of anything which has changed in that regard.  Just checking in Chrome 81 and Chrome 75 and NVDA 2020.1 beta 1 and it's announcing buttons and links for me.  In the NVDA document formatting settings (NVDA+control+d) you can set which elements are listed, including links and buttons (they're a fair way down the list).  Check those and make sure they haven't got unchecked somewhere along the line.

Quentin.

Re: how can I set symbol pronounciation for special case?

Sam,

Although I am certain that a regular expression could be crafted to work in virtually all cases where you need it, and not where you don't, is that really worth the effort?   I would imagine that you know when you are dealing with documents where you need the prime or double prime to be read, and I doubt that many, if any, of them are going to have single quote enclosed quoted strings or possessives for plurals for words ending in S.

It would be relatively easy to put regular expression that will work when reading these mathematical documents in either the Voice dictionary, and use a specific voice you don't typically use when reading these documents, or even to keep the regex in a plain text file and toss an entry into the temporary dictionary (which is more work, but it is an option).

I have written some insanely complex regex-es in my lifetime, but only when it was the only option because there was no way I could put any sort of "scoping rule" on the material that might be handed along for processing by same.  You likely have the luxury of knowing exactly when you're dealing with the material in question, and there are easier ways to get the result you want than spending lots and lots of time to get the magic, perfect, will work on any document regex if that's really not the easiest thing to get that result.

Help regarding NVDA for Indian languages

Atish Ghone <atishghone@...>

Dear All,

We have made Indian language TTS voice SAPI compatible and accessed the same in NVDA. It is working properly but we are facing one issue. When we type either English alphabet  or Indian Language Alphabet through keyboard, it is not getting passed to NVDA and so we are unable to listen the sound. However, when word is typed it is working fine. If alphabets/single characters are present on document it speaks.

to the one who had a corrupted sapi5 synthesizer.

Curtis Delzer

HI! try the ""revert to factory configuration" and see if that doesn't make your sapi 5 synthesizers work again using NVDA. I might have been ignored because mine it restored my sapi 4 engine, but I bet you'll have a good result if you give that a try before you attempt to re-install or repair all of those sapi5 engines. NVDA, has an issue where if you get into the control panel of it's synthesizers, it attempts to write to one of it's configuration files for a sapi engine and can't or gets interrupted in some way, it corrupts the file, it's own reference to it, so the "reset to factory configuration" somehow fixes it.
Try and see if it works for you. I bet you'll be surprised since it is working on the logon screen as you use to have happen, just as mine with sapi4.
I have an Eloquence set of voices from an installation of Kurzweil I use for sapi4 since I don't wish to pay for a sapi5 version of the Eloquence voices, and I saved a configuration which works on my logon screen. I attempted to have NVDA use a different voice under sapi4, and after changing speed and some other settings, no matter how often I press "ok," from within the NVDA dialog, it would not exit. So, when I re-booted to get my speech back it was a corrupted sapi4 engine that NVDA falsely reported, but naught was the case since every other screen reader which supported the sapi4 engine still worked fine so, hmm! I go, why?
If you re-install NVDA I suppose that fixes it too, but it is like using a hose when a squirt gun will do. :) So, try the "reset to factory configuration" first before re-installing all those sapi5 engines.
Let me know how you get on with it.

Re: OCR version 2, compatible with NVDA 2019.3 or later #addonrelease

Kara Goldfinch

Great news.

Even though I use Windows 10 and the regular OCr works in most cases, there are a couple of rare instances where, inexplicably, the old add-on gives better results. I kept 2019.2.1 around for the odd occasion I need to use the Komplete Audio 6's control panel as that is one of them.

On 18/04/2020 20:11, Joseph Lee wrote:

Hello everyone,

The following is applicable for fans of old OCR Add-on (compatible with Windows 7 and 8.x): a code contributor to NVDA is now maintaining the beloved add-on, which is now compatible with NVDA 2019.3. More information can be found at:

https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/ocr

Note that this add-on is not applicable to Windows 10 users, as Windows 10 contains OCR functionality.

Thanks for that additional info, which is good to have in case I need it.

I am beginning to figure things out but agree 100 percent that it would be a lot easier if accessibility needs were taken more seriously and met by developers of mainstream software. I just had a discussion with the tech support of another software. They recognized and replicated the problem I had described. (I gave them the link to NVDA for them to test the result.) However, I won’t see any change for the better to arrive at my fingertips anytime soon. Let’s face it, the problem I raised landed at the very bottom of their to-do list because it is not of immediate concern to the majority of (sighted) users.

Be aware that adding an email signature is doable but is also a pain in the neck. It would behoove you to write out your signature starting with stars(*) to separate the message from the signature.

do this in notepad then copy

open mail

tab to settings

arrow down to signature

If you have the necessary boxes checked to add a signature then tab one tab past picture. Note you wil not hear anything.

paste your signature

shift tab to save and enter

Hopefully this will be enough. You won't know until you open a new email and arrow down in the message field to see if it is there.

I have been complaining about the lack of accessibility for years with the results you see now.

Hello,Hi Robert, that's a good point. I think in that special case I would be okay with it, since it is relatively rare and as long as I got the regex to exclude the enclosing case like 'hello, world' then that would be good enough for me.

I will keep in mind writing the special prime and double prime characters, but alas my problem is reading other people's stuff that just use the plain apostrophe character.
