Hi, Chris,
The Excel program opens with a blank screen and will go no further. I believe it may be hanging due to a .dde error or something.

Works OK on my machine. Assuming the filetype has ben associated with Excel, what happens when you just press enter on the problem file?

Hi,
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am using Windows 10, Excel 2016 with NVDA 2016.2.1
I cannot open my excel spread sheets from a folder in “my Documents”. When I right click on the Excel file name (file with a .xlsx extension), and use “open with Microsoft excel”, Excel opens but with a blank screen and no sign of the file contents. Likewise, when I try to open the file from within Excel, I get a list of recent files but I cannot search for an existing file.
Any solutions?
All the best,
Cearbhall

Re: Speech recognition and deaf-blind
Just a general note: speech recognition technology has vastly improved over just the last several years and continues to do so. I dabbled in speech recognition when it was a new thing and found it almost useless. Now Google Voice automatically creates a transcript of my incoming voicemail messages and, particularly for the sound quality involved via phone, does a very decent job. I haven't tried the Windows 10 built-in speech recognition, but would certainly recommend playing with that. Dragon Naturally Speaking is a great product but certainly not alone out there in its basic speech recognition/speech-to-text arena anymore. Speech recognition requires some getting used to no matter how good it may be, particularly making sure you mute your microphone when something else interferes with the work you're doing. That, or turning off the function entirely. When you're dictating a document it can be rather amusing to see what gets in there when the spouse, kids, or coworkers give you a holler for whatever and you respond, having forgotten to turn speech recognition off. One could change amusing to frustrating and the same applies. I worry a lot. . . I worry that no matter how cynical you become it's never enough to keep up. ~ Trudy, in Jane Wagner's "Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe"

Hello: I am trialling the accessibility and "voice typing" functions available in Google Docs at the moment. Google Docs is the free online office provided by Google to anyone with a Google Account. Their voice typing function is only available if you use the Chrome browser. I have never had to train the voice typing function but I have in the past few months used it extensively and it is about 90% accuracy. Google Docs is very accessible with NVDA which is a great help. I am not deaf or blind myself but I work as part of a team of advisory teachers who support young people with visual impairments in schools. Thanks,

PSYes, Hp has sound issues quite often in my experience as it uses some odboall drivers. Dell can have issues with the drivers of sound but often installing generic ones cures them. Dells are also, in my opinion, beter made mechanically than most of the others.

Yes laptop with a keypad is a must, though the removal of the context application key can be a real pain on dell machines. you have to use an enlarged shift key and a function key to create this, surely a normal sized caps and a context key might have been wiser.

Might be a good idea to start from scratch if something has farted over the operating systm. It also might point to a hardware issue in the making or some malware. Don't attempt to update a system with serious issues it will and I've done it far too often end in tears. This is why in all previous windows I've use a piece of softwar called Errunt which backs up registry every day. Not sure is you read that right. I certainly find that if you look at your needs and try to get a machine that can do those things then that is good idvice. I seldom use laptops but find them quite a lot slower as they tend to use a lot of power saving things that can result in operations being slower.

Would you tell someone to get the most expensive car or stereo or television they can afford? A lot of people don't need anything more than a computer in the moderate price range. They don't need machines designed for power users or gamers. In addition, some people may not care if they have an SSD or not. I don't. My computer is plenty fast for my needs and desires. Get the best you can afford is as bad general advice for computers as for anything else you are contemplating purchasing.
