Re: Reading boxes in Microsoft Word

Thanks for the insight Quentin.
I will look at this document and see if I can make your suggestion work.

Text boxes are a bit fiddly in word. The easiest thing to do is actually
create a new text box (alt+n, x, enter) then press escape ONCE which takes
the focus out of the text in the new text box but leaves the text box
itself selected. Finally press TAB - this moves focus between any text
boxes and other objects (pictures etc) in the document.

If a text box is created "inline", it is possible to get to it with NVDA -
it will be announced as "slash" in the middle of the surrounding text.
When you get to that select it with shift+right arrow then you should be
able to read it and / or move to others. Most text boxes aren't created
inline - they're not by default and really it defeats the purpose of them
which is to have a box of text you can dump anywhere on the page.

I would recommend not using text boxes for anything anyone is creating, and
instead look at using tables or indent to position things.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Not as in a text box? I am not sure if NVDA can interact with them I
would have to have a play and see if it can be done.

If you at least point me in the right direction under which menus I can
have a sus. There might even be ticket for it if it is them.

I just had a look at a microsoft word tutorial I am putting together
even in browse mode as well as focus mode it will read the picture in
it. If there is no ALT text put into it you will just hear graphic.

I did put ALT text into my graphic/photo, so that is why it is read
out.

Is the graphic picture or what ever it is on the web they might not
have
put in ALT text to say what the graphic/photo etc is about.

I think with a table if there was alt text you had to use the NVDA key
+
the letter D in the master snapshot.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am using Windows 10, Excel 2016 with NVDA 2016.2.1

I cannot open my excel spread sheets from a folder in “my Documents”. When I right click on the Excel file name (file with a .xlsx extension), and use “open with Microsoft excel”, Excel opens but with a blank screen and no sign of the file contents. Likewise, when I try to open the file from within Excel, I get a list of recent files but I cannot search for an existing file.

Any solutions?

Why do web addresses have to be so complicated?
Surely they could havean address like amazon.com/access.

Folks,

The easiest way for the blind to access Amazon is through the Amazon access site

(https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ref=mw_access).  This site has a search field at the top which covers all Amazon things.  Just type in what you want, and the entire Amazon universe will be searched.  No categories needed.

Hi,

Actually, the same problems occur.  As I open the site and try to select Kindle store from the combo box in search options the form field/combo box does not work.  Also, even the sign-in link does not open.  This is strange as earlier when I used the other software this was done.  I hope not to go that way now.  Please help.

With best wishes,

Sorry, can you be more specific?

Are you trying to access Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk?

What features would you like to access?

Thanks,

Re: Speech recognition and deaf-blind

Just a general note:   speech recognition technology has vastly improved over just the last several years and continues to do so.

I dabbled in speech recognition when it was a new thing and found it almost useless.  Now Google Voice automatically creates a transcript of my incoming voicemail messages and, particularly for the sound quality involved via phone, does a very decent job.  I haven't tried the Windows 10 built-in speech recognition, but would certainly recommend playing with that.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is a great product but certainly not alone out there in its basic speech recognition/speech-to-text arena anymore.

Speech recognition requires some getting used to no matter how good it may be, particularly making sure you mute your microphone when something else interferes with the work you're doing.  That, or turning off the function entirely.  When you're dictating a document it can be rather amusing to see what gets in there when the spouse, kids, or coworkers give you a holler for whatever and you respond, having forgotten to turn speech recognition off.  One could change amusing to frustrating and the same applies.

Hello:

I am trialling the accessibility and "voice typing" functions available in Google Docs at the moment. Google Docs is the free online office provided by Google to anyone with a Google Account.

Their voice typing function is only available if you use the Chrome browser.

I have never had to train the voice typing function but I have in the past few months used it extensively and it is about 90% accuracy.

Google Docs is very accessible with NVDA which is a great help.

I am not deaf or blind myself but I work as part of a team of advisory teachers who support young people with visual impairments in schools.

Thanks,

PSYes, Hp has sound issues quite often in my experience as it uses some odboall drivers. Dell can have issues with the drivers of sound but often installing generic ones cures them. Dells are also, in my opinion, beter made mechanically than most of the others.

Hi

You can't go wrong with Dell.

Personally I prefer Dell, Toshiba or Asus. Acer is also good, but stay away
from Linovo and even further away from HP, because those tend to give the
most problems. I have had more students asking my advice about the last
mentioned brands than anything else.

Just try to get a laptop with a numpad if possible.

Every person is entitled to their own opinion and it is not necessary to go
for the most expensive machine, just the most reliable which you know you
can afford. If an R4 500 machine does a wonderful job, it is not necessary
to buy something for 4 times more expensive because of the specs.

It may just be a good idea to run Classic Shall on Windows 10 so that it
behaves like Windows 7. However, I find that Windows 10 is the most
responsive thus far and it is quick when receiving commands.

Hi all,
Hope somebody can maybe assist me with some Windows 10 inforrmation.
I'm considering maybe buying a computer which is running Windows 10 to
repllace this computer which is old and giving me plenty of problems. Is it
very easy to use Windows 10 or is it a huge adjustment? I have previously
worked on a pc rnning Windows 8.
My mane questions for thee moment are:
1. I use Openbook 8.0 for scanning and reading documents. Would I be able
to run it on Windows 10 or would I have to purchase another copy?
2. Is there a certain amount of memory that I should get when upgrading
to Windows 10 or doesn't it make a differencce. I'm aware that I have to run
NVDA as Jaws doesn't support Windows 10 unless upgrading to the latest Jaws.
If anybody has any other advice and tips for me I would really apreciate
it.
I llook forward too your responses.
