I think it would be great if there was an option to enable or disable the oannoucement of blank lines when you use ctrl+arrows to read by paragraphs, like Jaws, but only when reading by paragraphs...

I read mail as plain text. In Windows Live Mail, I can open your message and see an embedded attachment with an htm extension. So although the list doesn't allow attachments in general, embedded attachments are allowed. If they weren't, a lot of messages people want to read as HTML would only be available as plain text.

My recollection, from the very little comparison I've done is that Thunderbird doesn't let you see such embedded attachments if you read mail as plain text and I don't know how many programs let you see them. Gene

Re: Outlook and attachments

I suspect it may in a way. If you receive an e-mail that you are reading as plain text, there is an embedded attachment of the message as an HTML document and maybe Outlook is showing these attachments in a way that your screen-reader announces them. I'm not sure if embedded attachments are sent with mail at other times but I doubt you can stop this behavior as it is probabhbly either a fault in Outlook or NVDA, I don't know which.

Announcement: changes coming to Joseph Lee's add-on documentation
Hello everyone,
The following announcement is applicable if you use any of my add-ons (Add-on Updater, Control Usage Assistant, Enhanced Touch Gestures, GoldWave, Object Location Tones, Resource Monitor, StationPlaylist, Windows 10 App Essentials):
A series of changes were introduced to one of the tools used for packaging NVDA add-ons. In particular, these changes will have an impact on all community add-ons, including mine, as it changes aspects of add-on documentation (readme pages):
These changes will be rolling out in stages, beginning with development snapshots for StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials scheduled for this weekend, ending with version 20.06 of all my add-ons (for stable channel subscribers), scheduled for late May or early June.
Cheers, Joseph

Hello Cordelia and all, I use Jitsi regularly. I cannot say that it is as accessible as zoom but it is usable. The advantage of Jitsi is that it is open source and that it is installed on many different servers. In theory, anybody could modify the code to make it more accessible. In practice, you can use it but it is not so easy as it is for a sighted person. I tried to install the app but I was not able to use it. It is better to use it with Chrome, it works also relatively well with Firefox. I did not test with Edge. It is really easy to create a meeting room. You can either let the tool generate a meeting url or you type a name in the input field. When you are logged into your room, you have to allow camera and microphone. It works well in Chrome. In Firefox, you hear the message asking you to allow microphone and camera. It tells you the the shortcut to press if you want to accept. If you missed the shortcut, you just have to press F6 twice and you will find the dialog where you can allow camera and microphone and check "do not ask me again", then press ok. What is not so accessible, is that you have buttons to mute yourself, disable camera, open settings, open chat, raise your hand, see more functionalities , but NVDA does not inform you if the button is on or off. It just tells you : "enable/disable microphone", "enable/disable camera", "raise hand"... So you don't know if you microphone is on or off. In some instances of JItsi, when your microphone is off and you try to speak, you hear a voice message telling you that you have to enable your microphone. When someone joins or leaves your meeting, yo only hear "alert", but you don't know who joined or who left. If you want to have your meeting secured, you can add a password. It is in the menu "more information", which opens a dialog where you can copy the invitation and its URL. You can choose a password, but this dialog disappears after a few seconds and it's difficult to get or change the info. On the meet.jit.si page, you can record your meeting, that needs to be connected to your dropbox, but I never succeeded in getting the recording. Screen sharing works well. If you want to share your audio, you have to select that you want to share your whole screen, then check the box to share your audio. As a conclusion, you can use it but some functions are not so easy to use because of accessibility issues. Note that on the beta page, https://beta.meet.jit.si/, someone contributed in adding accessible buttons, so you had an idea if the button was enabled or disabled, but this improvement disappeared. In my opinion, the worst thing is that you don't know if your microphone is on or off. There are no shortcuts to enable or disable your devices. I hope this can help, otherwise do not hesitate to ask. Best Sylvie Le 04/05/2020 à 17:51, Cordelia Scharpf a écrit : Hi,

Re: Outlook and attachments
A very great number of messages, as noted by Shaun, have attachments that most of us don't think of as such. VCF files are used by many as signatures (or part of them) and, when that is the case, they are considered attachments. As far as I know, there is no way to make any e-mail client I'm aware of consider them "not an attachment."

I had hoped this topic had died a natural death, but apparently not. It is not on topic for the NVDA Group. Mr. Spivey gave an excellent resource, https://www.freelists.org/list/program-l, where this sort of programming question could be asked. It does not meet the criteria stated in the welcome message, monthly reminder, or the group description: "The central purpose of this group is discussing how to use NVDA, either configuring NVDA's settings or familiarizing oneself with its modes and commands. Discussions about which programs are accessible using NVDA, NVDA add-ons, NVDA tutorials and documentation, and configuring synthesizers or Braille displays for use with NVDA are also permitted."

Re: Outlook and attachments
A lot of emails actually have attachments even in thunderbird. These are usually company logos and the like They are not anything you need to be concerned about. Some email programs use winmail.dat and other data files for their incripted messages and message data. These are usually read by the email program in question and not usually need interacting with the user. Unless the email program is really old that is.

Hi Andre, Good question. Before replying I did test to see if I could replicate, and I neglected to mention that in my reply. I am using Office 365 version 16.0.12730.20236 with NVDA 2020.1 rc1. I didn't go back and test earlier versions of NVDA as the OP said they encountered the problem using the RC build. It would be interesting to hear back from the OP as to which version of Office they are using, and whether they are only encountering this issue in the RC build, or whether they can replicate with 2019.3.1 as well? (and re the troubleshooting tips, if you could also confirm whether any of those changes make a difference, and if not, a log from you might help with our investigation as well). Quentin.

Re: Excess verbosity when tabbing through tables in MS Word

Hi Quentin,
While I acknowledge that you have done a good job in outlining possible troubleshooting techniques, I noticed that you did not state if this is an issue that you have happened to replicate. While I understand that setups and configurations are different from computer to computer, I find that developers and those involved in making decisions relating to the screen reader often jump to troubleshooting issues before actually testing them out to confirm. This may frustrate the person who is reporting the issue. I can confirm this has been happening as to me as well, but it started happening with NVDA 2019.3.1. i'm not using Office 365, however, I'm using Microsoft Office 2019.

Re: Excess verbosity when tabbing through tables in MS Word

Have you restarted the PC since you updated NVDA? If not, go to the Start menu and restart the PC. Next, try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled (NVDA+Q then down arrow to Restart with add-ons disabled and press enter). If it is still happening, a copy of your log at debug level might be useful: First of all, your NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on how you have NVDA setup. So, to set your log level: 1) Press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings 2) Press TAB until the focus is on ""Log level"" 3) Press DOWN ARROW to get to ""Debug"" 4) Press ENTER to close settings 5) Press NVDA+control+c to save settings. To restart NVDA with add-ons disabled: 1) Press NVDA+Q 2) Down arrow to ""Restart with add-ons disabled"" 3) Press ENTER Next, recreate the issue - do whatever cuases problems. To get NVDA's log after that, there are several ways: If NVDA is still running and useable: 1) Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer 2) Press CONTROL+A to select all. 3) Press CONTROL+C to copy. 4) Open your email and start a message to info@..., type a little about what you have done and what has happened in the body of the message, then leave a space and: 5) Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied log. Instead of using the log viewer, or if NVDA has stopped and you needed to restart it or the computer: 1) Press WINDOWS+R to open Windows' Run dialog 2) Type %temp% and press ENTER (that's the percent sign, the letter t e m p and another percent sign). Windows Explorer should open to the temporary folder. 3) Press TAB to move to the file list 4) Press N and move down to find up to three files: nvda.log (the log file for the current or most recent NVDA session), nvda-old.og (the log from the previous session) and nvda-crash.dmp (a crash dump with more information created if NVDA itself crashes). 5) Depending on what email program you use, the steps will be different, but attach as many of those three files to an email to info@... as will be useful, and again in the body of the message describe a bit about what has happened.

but thunderbird for a while now, has the prompt from google to allow its access. And definitely its a secured app in google's list of those. I've been using Thunderbird for a long time now, and just set it up on a new laptop and I added my gmail without any problem, just put the credentials and next the prompt from google to allow thunderbird to access it, that's all. BTW I Have google's "Allow less secure apps: set to OFF" TC
