Thunderbird 68.8.0: Unwanted Verbosity Is Improved But Not Fixed

David Goldfield

Hello.

The release notes for TB 68.8.0 indicates that the extra messages heard by screen readers has been addressed. While the situation may have improved I don't believe that this issue has been totally addressed.

1. When pressing enter to open a message NVDA begins to announce something which sounds like "loading message" but the announcement is usually cut off fairly quickly. I suspect that this could be happening more on slower machines.

2. When a message that I am composing is being automatically saved to my drafts folder the status message indicating this is clearly being announced, as in "copying message to drafts folder." Should this be happening?

3. When I press ctrl-enter to send a message I sometimes hear the beginning of a status announcement but it gets cut off very quickly and I'm not able to determine what it's trying to tell me. I guess I should load the speech viewer to better capture some of what is being announced but I don't recall hearing any of this information prior to this problem initially being introduced.

I just checked through this message here and I'm not getting this.  True, if a link is spelled out with the full http etc, it will be read that way. But if it isn't, all I hear is what is shown.

However, maybe about half a second later the target URL is also spoken. I'm not sure when this started happening or if it's related to the additional verbosity we saw recently with Thunderbird which is now mostly tamed. I did have the speaking of tool tips enabled but disabling this setting does not correct the problem. Are others experiencing this and is there a workaround?

I'm seeing this consistently using the letter K to move from one link to the next.

The answer to the original question is, from all appearances, no.

And, since this topic has swung entirely toward JAWS scripts, and since all links to said scripts are available to all readers, this topic is now locked.

OE Classic gets more NVDA updates.

I just got the below email. This is in the 3.1 version of OE Classic. It's currently only the pro version. I have no idea when the free version of 3.1 will be released.

The news archive will give a better indication of what's to come in the pro version.

The accessibility email.

We've made a new update of OE Classic which further improves accessibility in the latest update of OE Classic 3.1, 2020-05-08. If you still don't run it, update is already available, please update using the built in update system.

This upgrade brings you info when browsing the message list if a message has been unread, flagged (including colored flags like yellow flag, green flag, blue flag etc.), replied, forwarded or draft.

Simply by browsing through messages this will be read by a screen reader. We tested with NVDA and it appears to work well.

This adds another accessibility improvement to the ones which we've done so far, especially the recent ones in version 3.1 based on your previous sugestions.

The work on this is ongoing and there will likely be further improvements to accessibility as well.

Just FYI, if I start using the b shortcut, it's the second button.  The

NVDA goes silent with Outlook 365

Hello all,

I am using the latest version of NVDA with Windows 10. This is something IO have noticed with at least the last 2 versions of NVDA. When Outlook 365 is downloading messages, NVDA goes silent, even if I’m working in another window. Does anyone know how to fix this? Maybe I need to set Outlook to only download email messages when I tell it to?

Hello!

Is One Drive able to serve as a backup for restoring Windows so one does not have to install everything from scratch?

I have Microsoft 365, so backup space is not an issue.

So if I do a clean restore of Windows 10 I can get all my software back all at once instead of getting it back piece-by-piece.

    Thank You! For your response!

And, therein, lies the problem.  I am a tech geek, I understand most, if not all, of what's being discussed as being involved in doing this.  Realistically, most end users don't and never will.  They have absolutely no interest in getting this involved in delving "under the hood."

I applaud anyone who does.  But I also know that my personal concern, and that's whether a client is blind or sighted, is that they have a backup protocol in place and that they are able to take the backups independently on whatever cycle is dictated by their personal circumstances.   If they need to recover from within Windows, that's already accessible under most of the software out there, and if they need to do a disaster recovery, it's generally not.  Having to hire someone to come in and actually do a disaster recovery is cheap, very cheap, compared to losing years worth of work and data, and way, way cheaper than engaging professional data recovery services on a failed drive.

I am far more concerned that the average user, blind or sighted, is taking backups so they're available for recovery, than I am about their ability to do the recovery independently.  God willing, they'll never need to use the backup, but if they don't have it to use and they have a catastrophic failure, then they are well and truly up the proverbial creek, in whitewater flooding stage, sans paddle.
