nvda with foxit reader

lutztiger.luigi@...

Hi all,

I’m on the lookout for a fine pdf reader which isn’t adobe. I’ve come across foxit reader who advertise themselves being quite accessible on both JAWS and nvda.

I’ve tried to read 2 pdf files with it, but all spaces seem to have been removed. Neither nvda nor jaws seems to be able to detect the spaces in the text. The same pdfs work just fine on adobe or Microsoft edge, so I’m confident the file itself is not the issue.

Did anyone have the same problem so far and has any solutions? I’ve used the latest release of both nvda and foxit reader.

Best,

almaric

Google Docs is very accessible with NVDA. I use Docs a lot, to produce well formatted documents. If you use Google’s commands to navigate, you will have a great experience. Let me know what you need help with.

Enhanced Touch Gestures 20.06, last version to support NVDA 2019.3 #addonrelease

Hi all,

Enhanced Touch Gestures 20.06 will be released tonight (Sunday morning in America). This release includes internal changes and makes the add-on compatible with NVDA 2020.1 and future versions. As always, you can grab it from community add-ons website or via Add-on Updater.

IMPORTANT: 20.06 will be the last version to support NVDA 2019.3. This is so that the add-on can be simplified. Specifically, NVDA 2020.1 includes a touch command to perform right mouse click (one finger tap and hold), which was a part of this add-on for years. Starting with a release scheduled for fall (spring in southern hemisphere), NVDA 2020.1 or later will be required so that this touch command can be removed from the add-on in favor of what NVDA provides.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello.

In NVDA 2019.3, NVDA add the automatic detection for the braille displays of Freedom Scientific. When you conect your Focus, NVDA go to use this braille display. But if NVDA didn't detect the conection, you can select the Braille display and the conection methot in the category braille, dialog options of NVDA.

Hello everyone,

First, thank you everyone for celebrating the news noted on recent In-Process blog post. I accept the All-American Team recognition solemnly, knowing that it means a lot to the blindness community, and for folks here, to the wider NVDA community.

Second, people who regularly visit NVDA community add-ons website may have noticed changes for entries such as Add-on Updater, Resource Monitor, and StationPlaylist. Those keeping an eye on version changes may have noticed a new entry named “20.06”. I’m delighted to announce that version 20.06 for stable channel subscribers is on its way for the following add-ons, to be released next week:

  • Add-on Updater
  • Control Usage Assistant
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures
  • GoldWave
  • Object Location Tones
  • Resource Monitor
  • StationPlaylist
  • Windows 10 App Essentials

For people reading the changelog might be wondering what the following entry means:

Resolved potential bugs with Flake8.

Flake8 is a tool used to check coding style for Python projects. NV Access and code contributors have been using this tool for months so NVDA screen reader source code can conform to certain coding styles used by wider Python community. Flake8 is also useful for discovering potential and actual bugs, as some of the more recent bug fixes in StationPlaylist were due to Flake8 flagging code that may lead to problems.

For many of you, you won’t notice any changes (apart from users of StationPlaylist). Because I know that many of you are impacted by COVID-19 (including physical distancing), I won’t release all eight updates at once – it’ll be done in waves, starting with Enhanced Touch Gestures and ending with Add-on Updater.

Speaking of add-on updates, I must confess that I’m exhausted after going through a confusing spring term in college. Therefore I will not be working on add-on maintenance in June so I can get some fresh air (i.e. taking a break). For users of StationPlaylist and Windows 10 App Essentials, this means no development snapshots in June; fortunately everything required for the next stable version (20.07) is done – all that needs to be done is release it after the break. I’ll still be around on NVDA list – it’s just that I’m taking a break from NVDA world for a while.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: question regard current for ground object.

Hi all,

We may need to change the description…

The “foreground object”, in this context refers to screen (programming description to follow). That is, when you press NVDA+B, NVDA will read contents of the screen – specifically the apps you are focused on. As Gene and others pointed out, it includes information that are usually not keyboard focusable such as tool bars, menu bar, status bars, among many other things.

Technical: for resident programmers, this command will perform a pre-order tree traversal. The root node is the foreground object (specifically, what NVDA thinks is the foreground object, which is ultimately set by accessibility API in use).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi

NVDA+b reads the current foreground object, in other words the object that currently has focus.  It is mostly used for things like windows that pop open to give information and just have an OK button.  NVDA  will usually read out the contents of the Window automatically but if you  wanted to listen to the details again, NVDA+b would read it for you.

Why not buy a USB sound card, and then set NVDA to speak through the sound card so that way the speech will not interfere with whatever you are using the main sound card for?
