As a home recording enthusiast, I use various types of music production software in conjunction with NVDA. There’s a very interesting NVDA plug-in that basically grants users access to graphical interfaces that are otherwise completely inaccessible. you run into a lot of these types of apps in the music world, such as various software instruments and effects plugins. anyway, I don’t quite understand how it does it’s magic but basically it uses optical character recognition to figure out what’s on the interface and you can then navigate its various controls like any other app. I do believe it requires specific templates to be developed for whatever software you are using it with. I’m just wondering, it seems like this type of approach could signal the next evolution of screen reader technology. Imagine if a screen reader could use artificial intelligence and machine learning along with existing strategies to grant us access to basically any interface, whether or not it followed accessibility standards. I wonder if such a thing will be possible in the near future outside of these very specific use cases like I described. Interesting food for thought.

Its safer to read mail as text or as plain HTML so I hope you use one or the other, whichever you prefer.

That's very interesting.  I had thought that e-mail programs automatically read a message as text if no HTML version is included but it appears that may well not be the case.  it sounds as though the message you received is from someone who, isn't sending messages in the standard way.  I've heard of messages that are HTML only, but I haven't heard of messages that are plain text only and that isn't at all the standard way messages are sent.

A lot of messages I get contain both H
TML and text versions.

I used to use Open Office (for 15 years or so) on Linux and Windows, but last year I switched to MS Office. My muscle memory for shortcut keys can not seem to get the hang of ribbon command shortcuts, but other than that I prefer MS Office.

I mainly encounter Google Docs on mobile platforms. I don't much like reading documents in Google Docs, so don't imagine I would like writing them there either.

Re: Windows 10 App Essentials 20.06, last release to support Windows 10 May 2019 Update #addonrelease

Kenny <kwashingtonbox@...>

Interesting why someone would want to completely disable speaking of those UIA app notifications through NVDA? You can disable them individually right from within the Windows Action Center located in the Systray.

First you here a UIA notification spawned by an app:

1. Press [Windows Key] + [a].

2. [Tab] over to the parent notification app grouping list.

3. Arrow [Down] to the child notification for the app you wish to disable.

4. [Tab] over to the "Settings for this notification" button.

5. Press the [Spacebar] on it.

6. From the pop up menu of options, arrow [Down] or [Up] to "Turn off all notifications for <Name of app>."

Simply Select it, and POOF: no more UIA notifications for that specific app. Have disabled notifications for Microsoft mail, and the Microsoft store. They were really the only notifications that were annoying the heck out of me.

I use Thunderbird as my primary email client.

Using the latest build of Microsoft Windows 10 v2004 by the way.

On 5/19/2020 3:12 AM, Joseph Lee wrote:

Hi all,

Windows 10 App Essentials 20.06 is now available. In addition to Flake8 related internals work, it brings ability to let NVDA stop announcing UIA notifications from Microsoft Store and other programs if “report notifications” is turned off from NVDA’s object presentation settings. As always, the add-on update is available via community add-ons website and through Add-on Updater.

IMPORTANT: in accordance with support policy for Windows 10 App Essentials add-on (supporting a given Windows 10 feature update for at least a year but not forever), version 20.06 will be the last release to support Windows 10 Version 1903 (May 2019 Update/build 18362). Version 1903 was supported by this add-on since March 2019, and it is time to say goodbye from this add-on. But not all is lost: Version 1909 (November 2019 Update) and upcoming Version 2004 (May 2020 Update) are supported (in a way, due to special nature of November 2019 Update, the add-on will keep supporting May 2019 Update a while longer). Actually, Windows 10 App Essentials supports two future feature updates already (more on that later). Nevertheless, for support policy, the next major version of this add-on (20.07) will require Windows 10 Version 1909 (November 2019 Update/build 18363) or later.

Also, for people using development snapshots: the last development snapshots before the break will be sent this weekend. The next one after that will show up in July.

Cheers,

Joseph

Down arrow through the choices. NVDA calls the items radio menu items, which makes no sense but that's how they are presented to NVDA. If plain text is checked, you are reading mail in plain text. Re: accessible uninstaller

There's 3 options I've found that work well. Ironically, one of the suggestions came from a certain blind website I'll refuse to name, because it's an illegal operation. But, the links below are all legit sources.

  1. Puran Utilities. Very accessible, but hasn't been updated in years. Don't be shocked if it never updates.
  2. Bulk Crap Uninstaller. Mostly accessible, but takes a lot of configuring to have it automate most tasks. IMO, it's junk cleanup is crap, but this is the only option that allows for batch uninstalling and cleaning up Windows 10 Metro apps.
  3. Hi Bit Uninstaller. Very accessible. Updates Frequently. I could never uninstall windows 10 apps with it though, despite it's claim. Typical capitalism. The cleanup process after uninstalls can be automated, but I found it leaving a bunch of registry items it should have removed. So, write to the developer.

Have fun! I hope others have more suggestions.

Re: A few questions

Hello Quentin,

NVDA automatically switches between synthesizers when I have more than one configuration profiles.  For example, If I have set One Core as my synthesizer, then NVDA will automatically switch to Espeak when I interact with my Windows and related applications. It goes back to One Core when I’m interacting with NVDA settings itself, reading a document or while browsing the internet.   The situation is similar with any synthesizer set as default. And, I can observe this same issue on NVDA 19.2.1 installed on my system and NVDA 20.1 which I sometimes use as a portable version. I reported the issue once on this list and was told by someone that the code for configuration profile is buggy. It would be great if you could help in any way.

Capital Letter Recognition

Marquette, Ed

All:

I have searched rather diligently, with no success, for an NVDA function that I saw, a couple of years back, was under development/consideration for either an NVDA feature or an add-on.

I do not see it anywhere in the NVDA manual or the tutorial, and I see no add-on with a title or description of this functionality.

I hope I’m just inept as a searcher.

I’m looking for the ability to recognize capital letters, not just when reading by letter—I know that functionality is present—but rather, the ability to recognize when words are capitalized (or in solid capital letters) when reading by line, by paragraph, or in say-all.

Presently, I have to switch to JAWS for this functionality, and it is so absolutely crucial that it must be, at least, under development in some add-on.  In fact, this functionality is the only reason I keep JAWS installed.

Surely others find the absence of this functionality a serious matter.  Perhaps we could pool our resources to pay a clever add-on developer to create it?

Thanks!
