Re: A few questions

This is very bothersome. This basically means whenever you change anything in the normal profile, it will carry over to the other profiles you have created.
The steps you laid out work perfectly well, Quentin. Just one correction, in step 9 the punctuation level will return to “none”, not to “all”. This didn’t help with what I was trying to do though. I wanted to change the individual symbol level of some punctuations, but, as it turns out, individual symbol levels of punctuations are global settings. Andre Fisher is correct in this regard. For example, if you change the symbol level of left and right quotes in a new profile, it will carry over to the normal profile as well. On the bright side, I realise, if you send the punctuations to the synthesizer in the punctuation and symbols dialogue box, and you have audio rules set for these punctuations in the Phonetic Punctuation add-on, then you will hear the set audio rule. So, effectively you can replace punctuations with audio sounds by sending the punctuations to the synthesizer without fiddling with the overall symbol level setting. This is what I was trying to do all this while. Got to learn a lot of things and finally managed to achieve the intended effect. Thank you guys!

about nvda add-on bringing text analiser feature in JAWS

Hi Friends
Is there any nvda add-on that works as 'text analiser' to find text inconsistency like that of jaws? In jaws, we find text inconsistency with insert+space, a; or with win key+alt+i. how about in nvda? Thank you! -- Aschalew Ashagre Byness (Ass. Prof. and Attorney-at-law M: +251-9110-616-92

NVDA remote, help please!!!
Charles Adkins
Sent from my iPhoneI use NVDA remote at work alot to work from home, but now I'm having a problem with one of my work computers. When I hit enter on connect, the remote screen disappears. When I press enter on "remote sub menu" I get the dropdown, but when I press enter on connect or options I am taken right back to the desktop. I've uninstalled the add-on twice, reset NVDA back to factory settings and check firewall permissions and nothing works. I hope I can get this working.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Re: Excel NVDA and Large Text Cells

Which Synthesizer are you using? I just typed 150 words in a cell with eSpeak NG and it read fine all the way, and read back. Then I did the same thing with OneCore and it worked. I just realised I used NVDA 2020.1 - is there a reason you are using 2019.3.1 and now 2020.1? Also are you using any add-ons? If you restart Excel with add-ans disabled, does the spreadsheet work any better? Re Louis suggestion - you shouldn't need to turn off allow editing in Cells - That was fixed over a year ago, but do let us know if it makes a difference. Ah here it is - 2019.1 had the fix for the editing in cells bug: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-29th-march/ Aravind, Please don't hijack threads - I know this is about Excel but it is a completely different question. Yours is a perfectly valid question, just would be better in its own thread (to be honest, off the top of my head I'm not sure - I'll have to have a look at it later). Quentin.

Re: Excel NVDA and Large Text Cells

Hello Ed,
Some tips for Excel cell editing.
You can open a cell for editing with f2. When you are editing with f2, alt + enter will insert a line feed in that cell without throwing you out of the cell.
Also, depending on what Microsoft and your screen editor have done lately, it is advisable to: Open an Excel spreadsheet. Type alt + f. Up arrow to options. Hit enter. Arrow down to advanced. Tab to “Allow editing directly in cells” and uncheck that box. Tab to ok.
This might help your situation.

I have a template Excel spreadsheet that I need to use over and over. It does some rudimentary computations, but mostly it is a repository for data. I have problems with one column. In that particular column, I need to enter a significant bit of text. We are not talking about paragraphs. Instead, the maximum length is about 30 words. Once the text exceeds, on average, five or six words, Excel goes totally silent. Text continues to be entered, but there is no sound, even when using arrows or the tab key to move around. I need to use Alt+Tab out and back again to restore speech. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I’m using the highest 19 version of NVDA (before version 2020) and the latest version of Excel. Thanks in advance.

Re: Accessible scanner drivers
Gene
Do you still have the old scanner and software and
does the old scanner work? You may have to connect the old scanner to
install the software. You may be able to begin the installation but at
some point, it may ask you to connect the scanner. If you install the old
software, and it has Fine Reader as the provided OCR program, you can use it
with other scanners or with the old one.

Re: A few questions
Quentin Christensen
If you run NVDA without the add-on does the symbol level work as it should? As you indicated, setting the punctuation level in a configuration profile should only affect that profile. If you DON'T specify a particular setting in a configuration profile, and then change it in the normal profile, it will carry over, but if you then change it in the profile, it will take the profile setting. To demonstrate: 1. using the normal profile. Set the punctuation level to all 2. Create a profile and activate it. 3. Don't touch the punctuation level, but read something - all punctuation is read. 4. deactivate the profile. 5. Set punctuation level to none. 6. Activate the profile again. 7. Read something, punctuation level is set to none. 8. Set punctuation level to some. 9. Deactivate the profile. Punctuation level returns to all (as set in the normal profile). 10. Activate the profile, punctuation level back to some.

Re: Accessible scanner drivers
Jean yeah you are right fine reader sprint v6 a stripped down abbyy came with some epson scanners of yesteryear. However its worth noting that aparently while the sprint version does exist, its development does not mirror actual releases of abbyy fine reader. The last versions I saw on the abbyy site were versions 8, and 11, suggesting that while abbyy may have fine reader sprint for some stuff that its either discontinued or just not something they care about anymore.

Re: Accessible scanner drivers
Hmmm most modern scanners unless they are the semi expensive ie over 200 dollars will have an ocr package.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Anything 90 dollars or under won't. All depends what you want. cannon will have an ok driver set, online html manual, etc. Hp will have a reasonable driver set, web interfaces, email printing but their smart setup and printer apps just don't work however regular drivers are a snap. Firmware updates can be a bit of a tricky beast but you can update from the web internal server and its ok. The hp connected account system is a heck of a lot better than it was a couple years back. I am unsure about epsom but they did come with abbyy fine reader sprint. Hp ones may come with readiris which sadly after version 12 aint worth it, a pitty because the prices for readiris on hps are majorly cut down. So a home version of readiris is a lot less than it would other wise be. A corperate version is slightly more expensive than the home version but aparently a user that I have as a friend and a fellow tester at dolphin and former dealer says its rubbish. Right now, the only issue which is not resolved is that abby 15 while having a lot more access is really slow on menu access. I have told support, they have tested it, and given it to the devs who have also tested it. The bug has been found and aparently fixed but there is no release date for the new v15. So either buy and use abbyy 14 or 12 for now. You can try 15 but the menus just don't speak right with any reader. Now if you want something with all the features, server controls, etc, brother stuff is the best. No eprint, but the ability for server side controls with software which I have not tried to use. An accessible ish web interface and service pannel. Not as good as hp's interface but not bad either. As usual updates from the device for firmware the updaters can be a bit hit and miss otherwise though a bit better than hp. The driver installers are slightly inaccessible on a couple screens but not to bad. The software updaters are ok enough to use. The iprint software after its set just runs but aint really accessible. The drivers themselves are ok but not that accessible though once installed its fine. A pluss for brothers is that there is a full version of paperport installed and this will work if you have any brother product on the system. The updater for that works well to. So it all depends on waht you want.

It would be slow but open them in librioffice and then save them but if they have very simple formatting just copy the text and paste in to notepad. This will get rid of all formatting. I use this technique and have for years to smash complex formatting from word documents and other things like webpages. you can get MS word reader which is free. Then do what I suggested - that is select all text and paste in to notepad and then save as plain text. enjoy. regards Ian
