Since you said you can use the NVDA key with another keyboard, it sounds as though that specific keyboard may somehow be sending codes to the computer that NVDA can't work with.  Someone with technical knowledge on the subject may be able to say whether I am right but that's my guess.  I doubt that remapping would do any good since I would think it would just tell another key to do exactly what the keys already do that is causing the problem.  You are telling another key to perform the same function that another key is performing now, not changing the code or the way the code is sent to the computer.

Hello,

Thanks for your suggestions!
Unfortunately, FN + Escape does not work on this machine.
And I can neither accomplish NVDA commands by pressing FN + NVDA.

I installed a application  called SharpKeys which is designed to re-map keys to other ones. I tried to re-map Caps Lock to be NumPad 0, but it did not help either.

I guess it would be possible to re-map caps lock to some key that would be recognized while pressing multiple keys together with it, but then I would have to change every NVDA command accordingly and that would be a huge amount of work.

There is something wrong. Your model has a capsLock key and should work with NVDA. Please start Narrator and press CapsLock-1 to enter lerning mode. If that works your capsLock key behaves normal. In this mode you can also find your other insert key.

Next step would be to find out why Narrator works with your capsLock key as a modifier and NVDA not.

Let us know the outcome.

Sounds like you need to get into the bios then. Under settings/advanced there are options to handle the keyboard. Of course, that means sighted help.

I think you have answered your own question

Use the FN key with the NVDA key and see what happens

Hello all,

I just bought a Lenovo Miix 630 laptop: a little, neat thing to travel with.
My problem is that the NVDA modifier keys do not work. The computer seems to have both Caps Lock and Insert available, because when I finally was able to access the keyboard help using the Miix computer remotely from another computer, it says "NVDA" when I press Caps Lock or Insert, and also Caps Lock comes on when I press it twice, so it seems that everything should work. But still, if I press, say Caps Lock + B, it acts like I would have pressed only the letter B.

This is not only an NVDA issue; exactly the same thing happens with Narrator. I cannot use any narrator commands that involve the Caps Lock key.
Another pain is that I haven't been able to reverse the function keys, so I have to press. for example, Alt+FN+F4 to get out from an application.
I do not know whether these two problems are somehow related.

Especially the fact that I don't have a NVDA modifier key makes the thing almost unusable.
Has anyone seen something like this and maybe been able to solve the problem?

As to whether the two problems are related, I would think so.  Press and hold the fn key and then press the NVDA key to see if it works.  If it does, you will know the problem is the FN key.

For the function key issue, try to hitt fn+escape. This turns on the normal function key behavior.

Re: ccleaner insites? accessible? discussion maybe?

If the CDEX installer were properly accesssible, you could see and refuse the added software.  I looked at the installer using System Access to Go and the offer was accessible.  it wasn't even indicated in any way with other screen-readers, that anything was there when it was being discussed and a way to reject it was displayed.

You can use CDEX portable, which installs nothing and has no such offers.  Listss can't help with problems if people assume asking won't help and don't ask.  I hope you already owned Goldwave and didn't spend forty dollars unnecessarily.

Hmmm to be honest, I have half a mind as I said to tell them that we don't want any extra software installed!!!

If they need adds, put them in a readable webpage at the end if they need sponsorship, heck, nagg us about buying on a after install webpage if they must, but we shouldn't have to bother about bundled software.

Its why I use goldwave a 40 dollar us program instead of cdex because cdex has addon software, and why I quit using the dvdvideosoftware package and got pontes media which doesn't do this stuff and brought the applian suite wasting 200 us bucks and of which I hhardly used because dvdvideosoftware had so much spyware in it and other unwanted stuff that by installing it one day I basically bricked my laptop, and even after removing the software in question had to reformat because it left a mess behind.

I think its time we tell the software makers that while we like and may buy their stuff, having adds shoved down our throats will drive us away or at least will make us gnash our teeth behind their backs.

I shouldn't have to worry about what is being loaded to use my systware.

I have had to give up good software because of foisted bundled stuff.

Excluding software which installs chrome for me because that at least is usefull I have had to go to a lot of trouble to get stuff that does not try to give me a really bad and public deal.

Its just the way I feel.

I have noticed that the user seems to be happy to have second place and put up withh things but this is the new world now, the virus has got rid of the old one and in this world I think its time for users to fight for the choice of what we want to run and what we want to install.

CCleaner has a slim installer but even so.

Hi all.

A while ago several months in fact as a user of ccleaner I recieved via
their news letter a servey to tell piriform about their product and how
good it was.

Of course I naturally opend up a can on how bad it was, etc and all that.

Today I got a message saying there is a panel going up, and asked me to
join in one of the questions there was a question about screen readers.

I don't know what this means, but this could be a step in the right
direction.

So my first thing to do is work on their accessibility issues.

The first one is the control panel with all the checkboxes.

My second are the settings in particular the button that switches on and
off smartclean, I had to use narator to check that button else nvda
would jump past it.

Third is healthcheck itself, I am going to ask them to either make it
accessible or have it turned off by default for screenreader users
because we don't really need it anyway.

Then there are add banners and messages which themselves are not
accessible as they currently are.

Finally, there is the startup of smart clean and other things on
installd  versions which we don't use or need and which can be a bother
to turn off.

Then finally last but not least, its the bundled software that is
installed, I know they need advertising for their free versions, and if
they really want sponsored listings and such they can open a page on
their site with all the extras, sponsered software, etc if they must but
not bundle it in.

Avast aint that good, its not accessible and all the extras do is screw
up our systems.

I'd also like to add portable mode to installers.

This is most of what I'd want.

The most important are the controlpanel, buttons in settings and the
health check for the first bash.

Hell if they just got the control panel right and maybe the buttons in
settings it should be a blooming good start.

The panel indicated direct feadback live was another possibility so I
would really like this.

If others get this mail I'd encourage joining the panel.

It seems that piriform or ccleaner or avast or whatever they are called
are trying to do the right thing here.

Its an awesome step in the right direction.

Now on top of the windows update being so good, keeping 99.9% of all my
settings in tact and all, I am a really happy user.

Re: ccleaner insites? accessible? discussion maybe?

Gene

That isn't an accessibility question.  If something is offered during installation that a sighted person can see by the installer, it must be accessible to a screen-reader.  If something is accessible on a web site, where an offer may be posted with some way to refuse, such as a check box, from an accessibility standpoint, that is adequate.  If the installer shows something and that thing is accessible, again, that is enough from an accessibility standpoint.

Whatever else you are asking for is something related to design or how clear companies should make these offers.  They often aren't shown in an obvious manner to sighted people, or not as clearly as they should be, maybe they are on a page with all sorts of other options.  If a blind person can look at the options, that is accessible.  Blind people are just as responsible for reading things on pages as sighted people are.  You can't use accessibility arguments to argue that a company change its ethics or design if its just a question of a blind person doing what anyone should do, read everything or enough of everything that you don't miss something, such as the beginning of every line on installation pages other than obvious navigation links.

Hello,

Yes, I did. All three options (Caps Lock, NumPad Insert and Insert) are selected. And, as I wrote, two hits on the Caps Lock key are required for Caps Lock to be enabled. To me it seems that the system somehow ignores Caps Lock if it is pressed together with another key or other keys.

Hi Hasan,

I have seen an error checking for updates when using a proxy: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/8948

And another more vague one without an obvious cause: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/7834

For that second one at least, rebooting the system helped some users.  Brian's suggestion of simply downloading and installing the newest version manually from: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/ should also work.

If you'd like to help try to diagnose a bit more before doing that, what would help us is a debug level log of attempting the update.  To do that:

"Could you get me a copy of your NVDA log to have a look at please, ideally at debug level?
Please send it attached to an email to info@....  Include a description of what you have done and what isn't working as it should (so I know what it's about in case I don't get to investigate today).

First of all, your NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on how you have NVDA setup.  So, to set your log level:
1) Press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings
2) Press TAB until the focus is on ""Log level""
3) Press DOWN ARROW to get to ""Debug""
4) Press ENTER to close settings
5) Press NVDA+control+c to save settings.

To restart NVDA with add-ons disabled:
1) Press NVDA+Q
2) Down arrow to ""Restart with add-ons disabled""
3) Press ENTER

Next, recreate the issue - check for updates.

To get NVDA's log after that, there are several ways:

If NVDA is still running and usable:
1) Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer
2) Press CONTROL+A to select all.
3) Press CONTROL+C to copy.
4) Open your email and start a message to info@..., type a little about what you have done and what has happened in the body of the message, then leave a space and:
5) Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied log.

Instead of using the log viewer, or if NVDA has stopped and you needed to restart it or the computer:
1) Press WINDOWS+R to open Windows' Run dialog
2) Type %temp% and press ENTER (that's the percent sign, the letter t e m p and another percent sign).  Windows Explorer should open to the temporary folder.
3) Press TAB to move to the file list
4) Press N and move down to find up to three files:  nvda.log (the log file for the current or most recent NVDA session), nvda-old.og (the log from the previous session) and nvda-crash.dmp (a crash dump with more information created if NVDA itself crashes).
5) Depending on what email program you use, the steps will be different, but attach as many of those three files to an email to info@... as will be useful, and again in the body of the message describe a bit about what has happened."

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Problem while updating NVDA

Thanks Hasan,

I will keep an eye out for your email!

Ok I am also curious - in order to get to 2020.1 - after uninstalling 2019.3, why did you not simply install 2020.1 rather than installing 2019.1 and updating from there?

Quentin.

Hello MR. Quentin.

Thanks a lot for your Email, Much appreciated.

Finally, I was able to solve the problem.

I will try to explain what I have done, nevertheless someone is facing it.

Firstly, I have completely removed NVDA from my laptop, I have removed everything, including the registries keys. I recommend you guys to using one of the uninstallation program to helping you removing the registries keys.

Afterwards, I have installed an older version of NVDA, “NVDA 2019.1”.

Finally, you will be freely able to update your NVDA and your addons.

Mr. Quentin, Today I am going to send you my previous log of NVDA 2020.1 to the menschened Email, perhaps there are a bugs to be able to fix them.

Best regards.

Subject: Re: [nvda] Problem while updating NVDA

Quentin.
