Re: Require help with Google Hangouts with NVDA

Dear all,

I am sorry to write back on the list again asking for help with the
Hangouts app. I tried with the Google Chrome web browser and am still
experiencing difficulty in signing in and joining a call. Perhaps I
may not be doing it right since this is the first time I had to use
it. Please guide me further to familiarise myself with it and use its
features effectively.
Your assistance is highly appreciated.

Sultana

Thanks CARLOS. I am already using it. But, I think, it is not similar.

Here is the description of backround tracker:

This addon speaks text on objects that purposely are not spoken. Examples of this are in ITunes, where the progress bar if spoken would lead to random talkking. Use object navigation to locate the text you want NVDA to speak. Then while the navigator object is still on the object you wish to track press 'nvda+shift+g' to track the object. NVDA will announce any text as it is updated. A quick example, while itunes is open use object navigation. Navigate to the top level window. Then navigate into that window and move through the objects going right until you hear nvda say something like lcd section window. Navigate into this until you hear nvda say window. At this point move right until you hear the name of the currently playing song. Go into that window and you will hear the name of that song again. Press nvda+shift+g to have nvda start tracking the object. Press the right arrow key to move to the next song when this is done and you should hear nvda say the title of the song. Another great use of this feature is for speech recognition window on windows 7.

Re: NVDA and Creating Anchor Text?

Quentin Christensen

Hi David,

An anchor is basically just a link.  If you want to create an anchor so you can link directly to a particular part of the text, here's a guide: https://www.rapidtables.com/web/html/link/html-anchor-link.html

The blue colour is just the default colour that many browsers use for links, just as links are usually underlined - you shouldn't need to do anything special in your HTML to specify that - either leave it to the design of the page itself if you are simply submitting content, or to the individual user browsing the site.

Quentin.

I don’t know if you had any other answers but as I understand Speech Hub basically operates to improve the performance of some legacy older voices like the older Microsoft voices and some others.

It also occasionally helps out in some other non NVDA situations, I don’t know why, but for example on one  machine I could not get the Speak On app to recognise standard purchased Sapi 5 voices but they worked fine when ported through SpeechHub for some reason so was very useful there.

No, they're not.  Google Meet is a product line all its own, launched since the Covid-19 pandemic started, that's meant to compete with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and the like.

Hangouts still exists as a completely separate product, though it's said Google intends to discontinue it.  Heaven knows they've done that before.  Voice (which still exists, but is virtually never talked about other than to get a phone number) was replaced by Hangouts and now that's going to be replaced by something else.  But if it's Google Meet that has not occurred as of yet.

Arlene, just FYI, if you have a Google Account you "have" Google Hangouts, though you may or may not have or use the Hangouts App for the Google Chrome Browser or have a Google Voice Phone Number that would allow you to be called by someone else.

Anyone with a Google Account can open the page hangouts.google.com in the web browser of their choosing and be able to make phone calls within the USA and Canada at no charge, make video calls to other Google Account holders, and, now, get into Google Meetings.   You can also send a text message from Hangouts, but only if you have signed up for a Google Voice number and allow Hangouts to use it.

Yes you can. I don't use keyboard commands, but personally I don't like google meets. Yes, that's what they are calling it now.

Take care

Dear list members,

I would like to be able to use Google Hangouts with NVDA for a

meeting. I wish to know if it is possible to use Hangouts with Mozilla

Firefox and if so, where I can find and open it in gmail. Please

provide me the list of keyboard commands to make and answer video

calls by accepting invitations and send and receive messages. Your

valuable assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance,

Sultana

Then start reading.  Google publishes extensive accessibility documentation for virtually every product it makes, and Hangouts is among those.  There's nothing like going to the source, and a simple web search takes you straight to it.
