Re: Tony's addons - updates

Hello Tony!
Very good your add-ons, it's a great job.
I have a couple of suggestions and some issues.
The first thing is if you could move the settings of your add-ons to
NVDA's built-in preferences, this would allow you to configure
profiles. It happened to me that the enhanced word navigation feature
doesn't work well in UIA controls, for example in the Address Bar of
Microsoft Edge, in Onenote, Quick Notes, etc. What happens is that
when you press ctrl and arrows, select that text and NVDA says
selected. However, I like the way it works with VS Code, so I have to
be activating and deactivating that function. With indent nav in apps
like the ones I mentioned, quick notes or onenote, so does the same,
NVDA says selected. Both add-ons work, but it's tedious that NVDA
verbalize that in these cases.

Thank you very much!

Hi Sorry for the late reply.

The list of SpeechHub synthesizers that are supported by default and why you might like to use them is here:

With the SpeechHub NVDA add-on they appear in the list of synthesizers in the usual way.

locked The NVDA Chat Subgroup - Please Consider Joining (Announcement Only)

Hello All,

The NVDA Group itself has over 1300 members, and over my years here I have seen how often many of you want to reach out and assist others with non-NVDA related questions.  This morning's Audacity topic is an example of that, and of people doing the right thing on it..  But I know a lot of you would like to actually answer those questions rather than just refer someone out elsewhere.

The NVDA Chat Subgroup is a venue for doing just that sort of thing.  We have a brand new member, both here and there, who has just posted a laundry list of questions regarding multiple other pieces of software that I am sure others could answer, and that some of you might like to answer.   If you fit into that latter category, please consider joining the NVDA Chat Subgroup.  At the moment, traffic is not high in general, and most topics, though not all, are focused on technical questions regarding other programs or services.

If you want to minimize your traffic from the Chat Subgroup, then consider subscribing then sending a follow-on message to get the group digest or summary, or follow the instructions here, Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io, regarding setting up topic preview for yourself on the Chat Subgroup.

Thanks for your time and consideration.  The Chat Subgroup addresses follow.

I will add, that even though it's not in the group rules, and if one wanted to be a really nasty stickler, referring people out to other resources could be classed as "off-topic" for the group, I will never, ever consider it to be so.

No matter what, we are here to help one another, and if a question is off-topic, referring the questioner to lists, forums, or other reference material that addresses their needs is always something that should be done.  Not only is it kind, it places "crumbs" for any future archive searcher to find, and it helps to keep the group as a whole much more on-topic than it would be if attempts are made to address off-topic questions in detail.

Also, questions about how to use Groups.io itself may arise occasionally.  I may direct those to the Chat Subgroup if they can't be answered in a "one and done" response, but if they can it's perfectly appropriate to assist anyone in using the actual mechanism of communication for this group.

Hi Brian and Sarah,

I would like to be able to make/answer a Hangouts video call and and
also reply to conversations in my contacts. Currently, I am attempting
to do this only with a single participant. When I open the Hangouts
app using Chrome, I am able to see that I am logged in to my Google
account but unable to click the Allow Camera button and answer a video
call. In the same way, I am not able to reply or send a message to a
particular contact. I tried the above using the Firefox browser as
well but with no success. By the way, I have not received a direct
link to join a meeting or a video call.

Another issue I am facing with Google Chrome is that when I open a
page or switch pages, I am unable to go back to the previous page
using the Alt and the left arrow keys.
I hope I have provided some clarity about the issues I am encountering
to seek more guidance.

With thanks and regards,

Sultana

Hey Brian,

Apologies for violating any protocols.  Thanks for the heads up, and I'm glad I was able to help. I was looking at it from an NVDA user helping a fellow NVDA user's point of view. Since the message stated that she was using NVDA as her primary screen reader I thought that I could answer the question without violating any list protocols. Overall, I'll chalk it up as a win.

Tony, you are absolutely correct, but Hettie very wisely recognized that the question she is asking is not really about NVDA at all, but about Audacity.  I truly appreciate that she's leading by example with regard to this.

As the group description states:
NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) is screen reader software.  The central purpose of this group is discussing how to use NVDA, either configuring NVDA's settings or familiarizing oneself with its modes and commands.  Discussions about which programs are accessible using NVDA, NVDA add-ons, NVDA tutorials and documentation, and configuring synthesizers or Braille displays for use with NVDA are also permitted.

If the question were about NVDA or an NVDA add-on then it's on-topic.  If it's a question about how to use Audacity, where NVDA just so happens to be the screen reader you're using, it's not.  This is a distinction that needs to be made, by each and every member.

Again, I commend Hettie for being sensitive to this, and I commend you and others who've already done so for directing her to resources where those sorts of detailed questions can be asked and answered by those who've, "been there, done that, got the T-shirt."

NVDA and Audacity recordings

Hettie

Hi Listers

I am new to this List and not sure yet what may be discussed and what not.

Nvda is my only screen reader and I work with Windows 10.

I need assistance with Audacity recording stuff from an old tape recorder.

Current questions include which version of Audacity to use; how to determine the volume at which I am recording.

Do you know a blind group specifically for new Audacity users?

Thanks

Hettie

Re: Require help with Google Hangouts with NVDA

By the way, I have no difficulty accessing Hangouts using the Hangouts page (hangouts.google.com) under any browser though I also use the Hangouts App under Chrome as well.

Re: Require help with Google Hangouts with NVDA

Sultana,

More information is needed as far as what you mean by "call."   The Hangouts App supports making phone calls (in certain countries), participating in Hangouts calls (voice only), participating in Hangouts video calls, and sending text messages if you have a Google Voice number associated with Hangouts.

If you are using the Hangouts App with the Google Chrome browser, and are logged in to the browser, you are automatically logged in to the same Google Account for the Hangouts app.

Please offer additional details regarding what it is you're attempting to do.

Dear all,

I am sorry to write back on the list again asking for help with the
Hangouts app. I tried with the Google Chrome web browser and am still
experiencing difficulty in signing in and joining a call. Perhaps I
may not be doing it right since this is the first time I had to use
it. Please guide me further to familiarise myself with it and use its
features effectively.
Your assistance is highly appreciated.

Regards,

Sultana

Thanks CARLOS. I am already using it. But, I think, it is not similar.

Here is the description of backround tracker:

This addon speaks text on objects that purposely are not spoken. Examples of this are in ITunes, where the progress bar if spoken would lead to random talkking. Use object navigation to locate the text you want NVDA to speak. Then while the navigator object is still on the object you wish to track press 'nvda+shift+g' to track the object. NVDA will announce any text as it is updated. A quick example, while itunes is open use object navigation. Navigate to the top level window. Then navigate into that window and move through the objects going right until you hear nvda say something like lcd section window. Navigate into this until you hear nvda say window. At this point move right until you hear the name of the currently playing song. Go into that window and you will hear the name of that song again. Press nvda+shift+g to have nvda start tracking the object. Press the right arrow key to move to the next song when this is done and you should hear nvda say the title of the song. Another great use of this feature is for speech recognition window on windows 7.
