Janet,

To what are you making reference here?  I ask because NVAccess does not, to my knowledge and according to their own support pages, offer official e-mail support.  They point to online resources, of which this is one, but while we're closely associated with NVAccess we're not really "owned by" them.

Jane,

NVDA can and does read row and/or column titles.  Please take the time to do some research and playing around before throwing in the towel!

I don’t use row titles, just column titles in row 1.  I usually have column A blank, just because that’s how I did it in WindowEyes.  So my data starts in B2, and goes from b2 to p17288.  Not sure what else I can do at this point.  I’d sure hate to have to go back to jaws, but if I can’t read the column titles of my big spreadsheets, I may have to.

You may also install an addon for Outlook which gives you lots of the Window-Eyes capabilities back for Outlook. Please see here:

Hi, Jane,

I haven't worked with exel using NVDA but asfar as opening attachments in outlook, you shift tab to the attachment and hit control right arrow. You'll hear the word "message". Hit the context key and arrow down to penattachment. Hit enter to open it.

Hope this helps.

Re: NVDA becoming unresponsive in Microsoft Teams

Eilana Benish

Shalom all

this is a known issue for quite some time now and as I understood the problem is with the platform for making apps like Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp For Windows .

in the meantime , I suggest you work with Microsoft Teams from the browser. I guess that the best experience would be with the new Microsoft Edge based chromium.

I tested Microsoft team with the Mozilla Firefox browser and NVDA And I did not experience any problems with NVDA stops Speaking .in fact I think that in the browser Microsoft teams works better due to the high level of Accessibility using ARIA correctly.

‫בתאריך יום ד׳, 3 ביוני 2020 ב-15:41 מאת ‪David Goldfield‬‏ <‪david.goldfield@...‬‏>:‬

This problem is not just an NVDA issue but is more of a problem with Teams and it's one which Microsoft is aware of, although I'm somewhat mystified that it's taken this long for a fix to be deployed to production.

One way to get Teams to cooperate when accessibility seems to break down is to resize the window. In other words, press Windows-down arrow to minimize it and then restore or maximize it again. This should get Teams to resume communicating with your screen reader.

The conferencing/chat app Microsoft Teams is generally fairly accessible, but I’m experiencing a recurring issue. After a certain amount of time with the app loaded, eventually NVDA will no longer narrate the contents of the Teams GUI when using the tab key and Teams shortcut keys. When this happens, the only way to navigate the app is with object navigation. If I close and relaunch Teams it starts working again.

This happens frequently, but I can’t quite pin down a specific condition or amount of time that triggers it. Sometimes it happens out of the blue, other times it seems to happen after I’ve shared my desktop on a call.

I’ve tried restarting NVDA but it doesn’t fix it. I’ve also tried NVDA key + F5 to refresh the virtual buffer but still nothing. Can anyone think of any other troubleshooting steps I can try? Having to restart Teams is not ideal, as I’m often in the middle of a work conference and that’s akin to walking out of the room. Lol. Especially annoying/embarrassing when I’m trying to share content.

Tyler Spivey

NV Access doesn't seem interested in fixing this.
In the meantime, I've written an addon which will do the best it can
given how NVDA works to let you do this.

The limitations are that it'll disable live regions, but it'll also
disable the API while turned on. So things like TW Blue, etc won't work.

Here's how to use it. Install the addon, then bind a gesture to it in
the editor.
I use NVDA+print screen. While turned on, that page reads fine.

I was also very happy with Window-Eyes. Fortunately, I skipped JAWS completely and came directly to NVDA. I have been happy with it so far. The email support is outstanding.

Regarding attachments in Outlook, recently I was having an issue where NVDA would announce that a message had an attachment but, when shift-tabbing from the message body, no attachment would appear. Apparently these messages did not in fact have attachments but the reason NVDA saying they did had something to do with how the message was written. When messages do have actual attachments, they will appear when you shift-tab from within the body of the message. You will hear the list of attachments and told to use alt plus down arrow to hear the list of options.

I have no meaningful experience with Excel so cannot help you there.

Hope this helps,

Hello Jane. Welcome to this list. Like you, I was a loyal Window-Eyes user myself and I am using NVDA and it is a fantastic product for sure. Anyways, to answer your question about Outlook, if you shift tab to the attachments list, use your right arrow to select the attachments. I don’t have any experience with Excel with NVDA but NVDA has basic training modules you can purchase and I believe there is a training module in it for Excel.

Hello and welcome to the NVDA Group.   Specific questions on how to use Audacity itself are not on-topic for the main NVDA Group.  I will give the e-mail addresses for our Chat Subgroup, where they are appropriate, in a few moments.  I wanted to make sure you had membership established in the NVDA Group since you must have that before you can join the Chat Subgroup.

I know we have (or have had, the group always has some flux) members who are active Audacity users.  There also appears to be an unofficial NVDA add-on for Audacity (https://github.com/paulber007/AudacityNVDAAddon)  but it does not appear to be under active support and would not be compatible with the current version of NVDA.

I thought there was a group on Groups.io for blind users of Audacity, but I can't find it.  I'm almost certain one exists, so I'll allow someone else to point you in its direction.

Should you wish to ask specific questions about using Audacity itself.  That should be done on our Chat Subgroup.  Here is the vital information for that:

To stop receiving messages via email (you may still read messages on the Web):  chat+nomail@nvda.groups.io
This can also be used to put a vacation stop on group messages, then use one of the addresses below to resume delivery in the format of your choice.

To receive each group messages individually:  chat+single@nvda.groups.io
This is the default delivery unless you send a message to one of the addresses that follows.

Hello Tony!
I have a couple of suggestions and some issues.
The first thing is if you could move the settings of your add-ons to
NVDA's built-in preferences, this would allow you to configure
profiles. It happened to me that the enhanced word navigation feature
doesn't work well in UIA controls, for example in the Address Bar of
Microsoft Edge, in Onenote, Quick Notes, etc. What happens is that
when you press ctrl and arrows, select that text and NVDA says
selected. However, I like the way it works with VS Code, so I have to
be activating and deactivating that function. With indent nav in apps
like the ones I mentioned, quick notes or onenote, so does the same,
NVDA says selected. Both add-ons work, but it's tedious that NVDA
verbalize that in these cases.

Thank you very much!

Best regards

pycld2 is better it has built in function to split string into
languages, but you have to  pip install from github not pypi. The
version on pypi has issues on install.

That's what I thought too.

On a separate note, I was thinking that we can use langdetect library
to detect the language of every paragraph on the fly and switch to
that language. This would allow to automatically switch between two
Latin-based languages, or between Chinese and Japanese. Maybe some day
if I have enough time I'll work on that...

So, like among the latin languages, it is not possible, without lots
of processement, to switch from chinese to japanese and vice-versa...

No, they have different character. As far as I know.

Language map can be edited in preferences. Do Chinese and Japanese
use the same Unicode character set or different ones? If they use
the same set, autmatic switching won't be possible.
