Re: New to NVDA, questions about Outlook and Excel with NVDA

Jane Carona <jane.e.carona@...>

Good morning, (or whatever time it is where you are, I’m not really sure).  Anyway, Thanks so much for writing back.  I’ll check out that github thing, never heard of it.  And I’ll send you both spreadsheets so you can have a look.  The one that’s called my books data base a-l is the one where half the columns don’t read properly, with crossing by night showing as “title”, and suspense showing instead of the column title genre.  The spreadsheet called my books data base m-z works fine.  And now I’m having trouble with NVDA and Outlook, where I’m happily typing along and NVDA freezes and when I get it back I’ve lost the message I’ve been typing!  I’m back in Jaws now, never thought I’d have to do that!  Things were fine until yesterday when I had a guy from Microsoft accessibility reinstall my NVDA in hopes that that would fix the excel issue.  This has been a struggle, I can tell you.

Anyway, attached are the two spreadsheets, see what you think.  And I do have whatsapp, so maybe if you want, we could talk that way.  We Excel people need to stick together!  My mobile number is 301-922-2994.  Those of us in the United States are so provincial, that I haven’t a clue about a country code, sorry.

Great to meet you, jane!

I appreciate the difficulty with wading through full data in the cell before getting the feedback on which column is in focus. I believe there is pressure on the programmers to bring in a change to allow the user to choose whether to have column title before the data or after.

Have a look through this discussion on Github:

NVDA is an ongoing project and bits are being developed all the time. It seems there was early pressure to give the data before the column title but that might have been because cell coordinates were also getting in the way.  It is a good idea to get familiar with Github so that you can raise issues with the developers and build a case within the community of developers and users.

I am puzzled by your problem on the second worksheet. Could you forward it to me privately  at my email below and let me see what is happening? I promise to destroy it after I understand what is happening and will, of course, keep it private.

There is no logical reason why the column title would drop to the second row without actually being assigned to that row before the first row was inserted. Guessing is futile! I would need to run through the actual table.

Alternatively, you could ring my mobile in Facetime or WhatsApp and I could walk through the issue with you with NVDA turned on and speaking.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Thanks so much for writing, it’s so great to talk to someone who uses Excel as much as I do!  Let me see if I can explain my problem:

My problem now is that I wish I could get NVDA to read the column title before the data instead of after it.  Is there any way to do that?

Hi Jane,

I am a keen user of Excel with NVDA. I use it almost every day. I would be happy to answer any queries you have.

I wonder exactly what problem you are finding with column headings?

I note that you start your columns one column in and one row down from the top. That is no problem. Place your cursor on cell b2 and press NVDA+shift+c. This will fix b2 as the start of the column headings. If there is a break in row 2, the column title will stop being spoken with the last column before the break. Simply move the cursor on row 2 to the right until you get to the first filled cell after the break and press control+shift+c again. This will set the whole row to be the next set of column headings until the next empty cell in row 2. Repeat this until all the column cells are enabled as column headings. Each column will be echoed even if you are moving on the 1048576th row of the table.

The trick is to watch the gaps.

Let me know if this solves your difficulty and let me know if I can answer any more questions for you! I write complex formulas and macros with no problem using NVDA. It is a great product!

All the best,

I don’t use row titles, just column titles in row 1.  I usually have column A blank, just because that’s how I did it in WindowEyes.  So my data starts in B2, and goes from b2 to p17288.  Not sure what else I can do at this point.  I’d sure hate to have to go back to jaws, but if I can’t read the column titles of my big spreadsheets, I may have to.

Re: Editing an Excel cell with a Braille display

Louis Maher

Hello Jane,

For Excel, try this.

You can try unchecking the box which says “allow editing directly in cells”.  In Excel 365, do this:

Type alt + f. Up arrow to options, hit enter. Down arrow to advanced. Tab until you find the box which says “allow editing directly in cells. Uncheck that

box. Shift + Tab until you reach OK. Hit enter.

As for the capitalization pitch indicator, I have noticed that some voices do not show the capitalization shift change.  For this reason, in the Speech option, I have chosen One Core Voices, and I use Microsoft Zira.

That voice does give me a capitalization pitch change.

I promise this is the last question for today!  But I notice that when I want to edit a cell in Excel, and hit F2, my braille display (a very old Focus 80) doesn’t track, and the cursor routing keys don’t work and my edits don’t show up until I hit enter.  Do I have some setting wrong?  Or is this a problem with NVDA and the Focus.  Also, my capital alerts aren’t working, with no differentiation for capitalized letters, even though I have it set in settings to notify me with pitch of any capitalization changes.

I’ve been playing with this most of the day now, and I think I’m going off to read a book.  I bet everyone’s breathing a sigh of relief!

Re: Editing an Excel cell with a Braille display

Jane,

I dont use a Braille display with the computer so I cannot help with that. However, it might be a help to know that I find that NVDA does not echo my typing in a cell that I am editing until I backspace /delete a character, such as a space, for example. Then the cursor key is tracked and speaks fully. I can imagine that once NVDA is activated in this way,, your Focus should get some stimulus from NVDA.

You might also find it useful to know that if NVDA is silent after editing a cell or any other activity, pressing the left alt key twice will get NVDA back into focus and it will speak everything as usual.

Hi. Responding publicly as others may also be interested in this question.

The Eloquence voices from NVDA work well on the systems which I've used with it. I did not purchase the SAPI5 voices but instead purchased the Eloquence/Vocalizer addon from Code Factory, which is designed to exclusively work with NVDA. I am not familiar with a voice named Bryan.

Re: Stop NVDA from automatically reading media on webpages

Personally I use an ad-blocker in every browser I use except Brave, which does ad-blocking as part of its functionality.  If I have a site that refuses to let me in when the web browser is active, I either disable it for the page I'm trying to get at or the site itself, and that's only if its a site I know I have reason to use repeatedly.  Otherwise I simply take the site off of my list of sites I'll use.  As far as I'm concerned, no site has the right to dictate to me whether or not I can use an ad blocker.  If web ads were as innocuous as print ads are (to the sighted) where you can just jump right over them that would be one thing, but they're not.  They blink, scroll, flash, and sometimes even have sound associated with them.  They make using the web sheer hell for a great many, and I don't want to have to deal with them.

Websites have every right to include ad content, but they have no right to make me view it.

I sometimes use “reader view” in Firefox. It helps a lot. I *think8 chrome has something similar built in, though it might not be as easy to get to – if it doesn’t, there are definitely extensions you can try for it. If you find yourself on a page where there is annoying “dynamic” content getting in the way of your experience, activate reader mode, and it does its best to strip away a lot of this content. When you’re done, leave reader view and return to normal interactions. It usually works pretty well, though there may be instances where you lose a bit of valuable content too – that hasn’t actually happened to me often.

In Firefox, I just press f9 to activate this mode. It’s also on the toolbar.

Subject: [nvda] Stop NVDA from automatically reading media on webpages

Hello

I'm not sure the subject line accurately describes my issue, but it seems like there are webpages today that have content that automatically refreshes and changes. \unitone \left(  \r2\mathbb{\usepckage{times 9 it appears to be used for advertising or promoting a website's publications.   NVDA }}i\aght) automatically reads this content, and it often interrupts my reading of the articles themselves. Here is an example of a webpage: https://www.lovefood.com/recipes/60477/denis-cotters-black-bean-soup-with-chocolate-and-chillies

As I tried to read the recipe, the screenreader is also reading some sort of a flash object that is promoting other articles. Is there a way to stop this? It seems like either I should be able to stop the screenreader from announcing this, or I should be able to stop Google Chrome from displaying it. I have used ad blockers in the past, but it seems like many webpages now will not allow you to access their resources if you are using an ad blocker, so I wonder if there is some other tool that I could use.

Regards
Justin
