Re: Minor Problem: NVDA Closing/Exit Sounds Not Being Heard When Exiting NVDA
Vlad Dragomir
Hello,
I used to have this exact problem in conjunction with the Acapela for NVDA add-on. As soon as I uninstalled it, the wave file began to be heard again. I sent this description to the Acapela team, but of course, attentive and caring as they are, I never heard back from them. I hope this may help you at least a little bit.
Best,
Vlad.

Minor Problem: NVDA Closing/Exit Sounds Not Being Heard When Exiting NVDA
David Goldfield
Admittedly, this is not a major problem but I've recently noticed that when I press ctrl+Q I no longer hear the wav file that is normally heard when exiting or closing NVDA. The wav file does exist in the same folder as the startup file and when I open the file it does play in my default media player. I thought I remember seeing some recent discussions about this on this list but I could not locate the relevant thread when searching the archives. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a known fix? I did install the 2020.2 beta 2 release but the problem persists.

It is not the voice that needs to be updated. You need to update the driver for the voices. You should be able to find the updated driver from the code factory website or from where you bought the voices. Greg Wocher

For those of you who already have NVDA’s Acapela voices, if God forbid I were to be in this situation, but it’s always good to know just in case: how would one recover an activation key (out of the 3 given when purchasing), if the computer on which the license is activated, suddenly dies, without loosin the key in the process, thus being unable to deactivate that machine’s key, through NVDA/Acapela voices/License Management? If I let that key go, when I get the computer repaired and returned back to me and upon activating Acapela again on that same machine especially if he computer needs to be reformatted), I’d e using up Activation Key #2; hence having one left for emmergencies! Is there a website I could go to, and manage my activation keys without depending on the machine on which the key is activated, to deactivate it? I wouldn’t want to loos any activations unnecessarily. Thanks for info.

Oh that’s awful! How does Chrome work with facebook? I’m using the Ipad I share with my room mate. I find facebook is easier with the I pad. I’ve never tried it on windows ten yet. That’s why I’m asking how well does it work with either Microsoft edge or Chrome?

Hi from me,
You say that you happen to face it on Firefox. I face it on Google Chrome. That's to say, when I come upon the like button in the reactions toolbar area while in the browse mode, NVDA automatically switches to the focus mode. And then, when I hit escape as you do, NVDA's focus is thrown somewhere else. To get rid of the inconveniences, I go to the NVDA menu, choose the advanced submenu, and then tab to the automatically set system focus to focusable elements to uncheck it just to stop NVDA's focus skipping of its own accord. When I do that, I can use www.facebook.com much better when I walk through the reactions area and the comments area.
Both Chrome and NVDA are the latest versions (NVDA being the latest stable).

Are you already in forms mode and have you tabbed to where you want to be? If you have first moved there in browse mode, then pressed enter. you may be in the wrong place because the browse mode buffer may not be lining up with the actual page, where you are when you switch to browse mode.

My suggestions may not help. Some pages don't work properly no matter what you do, but what I'm suggesting may make some pages useful. You might also achieve success by trying another browser and screen-reader. Gene

Hi On Windows 10 2004 and NVDA 2020.1, loading a language pack makes the related OneCore voices available. I just had the UK english language pack loaded but wanted the OneCore Mark voice, so I loaded US English language pack and the voice became available to NVDA along with 3 other voices. No registry tweaks necessary.

Re: NVDA Portable - What are the differences when using it?
from nvda user guide.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
3. Getting and Setting Up NVDA If you have not yet got a copy of NVDA, you can download it from www.nvaccess.org. Go to the download section and you will find a link to download the latest version of NVDA. Running the file you have just downloaded will start a temporary copy of NVDA. You will then be asked if you want to install NVDA, create a portable copy or just continue using the temporary copy. If you plan to always use NVDA on this computer, you will want to choose to install NVDA. Installing NVDA will allow for additional functionality such as automatic starting after logon, the ability to read the Windows Logon and Windows security screens (which cannot be done with portable and temporary copies) and creation of Start Menu and desktop shortcuts. The installed copy is also able to create a portable copy itself at any time. If you want to take NVDA with you on a USB thumb drive or other writable media, then you should choose to create a portable copy. The portable copy also has the ability to install itself on any computer at a later time. However, if you wish to copy NVDA onto read-only media such as a CD, you should just copy the download package. Running the portable version directly from read-only media is not supported at this time. Using the temporary copy of NVDA is also an option (e.g. for demonstration purposes), though starting NVDA in this way each time can become very time consuming. 3.1. Portable and Temporary Copy Restrictions Apart from the inability to automatically start during and/or after log-on, the portable and temporary copies of NVDA also have the following restrictions: • The inability to interact with applications running with administrative privileges, unless of course NVDA itself has been run also with these privileges (not recommended). • The inability to read User Account Control (UAC) screens when trying to start an application with administrative privileges. • Windows 8 and later: the inability to support input from a touch screen. • Windows 8 and later: the inability to provide features such as browse mode and speaking of typed characters in Windows Store apps. • Windows 8 and later: audio ducking is not supported. 3.3. Creating a Portable Copy If creating a portable copy directly from the NVDA download package, simply press the Create Portable Copy button. If you have already closed this dialog or you are running an installed copy of NVDA, choose the Create Portable copy menu item found under Tools in the NVDA menu. The Dialog that appears allows you to choose where the portable copy should be created. This can be a directory on your hard drive or a location on a USB thumb drive or other portable media. There is also an option to choose whether NVDA should copy the logged on user's current NVDA configuration for use with the newly created portable copy. This option is only available when creating a portable copy from an installed copy, not when creating from the download package. Pressing Continue will create the portable copy. Once creation is complete, a message will appear telling you it was successful. Press OK to dismiss this dialog.
