Re: NVDA Freezing

Hi,

Which versn of NVDA is this, and does this occur when you tell NvDA to use a specific synthesizer, add-on or a braille display? I and NV access folks are concerned about this at the moment (there is an ongoing effort to resolve this).

Cheers,

Josephi

Subject: [nvda] NVDA Freezing

Hey,

This has only started happening recently, but as it's happened three times now, I thought I should report it. I don't know whether it was caused by the latest update of NVDA or my recent acquisition of a Focus 40 Blue Braille display, but it happened the first time the day after the latter occurrance and I updated to the new NVDA about a week before that.

What happens is that NVDA freezes after seeming to have started up all right. I know it freezes because I can hear nothing from it nor see any output from the Braille display. The first time this happened I got my sister to look at the screen and there was an error message about some file that couldn't be read/found...or something. I can't remember the details and I obviously cannot check for myself. All I know is there was a file extension in the error. The last two times, I just shut down the computer and restarted. Most of the time, NVDA works as normal. The one thing the three incidents have in common is that they happened just after NVDA started up. The first two times it was on initial startup. The second time was after I restarted NVDA due to it responding sluggishly, an occurrence that has happened often enough in the past and wasn't a cause for concern to me.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have more information? I'd appreciate any input you can provide.

1. Press Control+NVDA+P
2. Press Alt+N for New Profile.
3. Tab, then down arrow in a list of radio buttons to Say all. Press Enter twice to Manually activate.
4. Go to Document Formatting settings dialog and configure the say all profile to your liking. Press Enter.
5. Press Control+NVDA+P again and Tab to Manually deactivate. Enter. That's it!

It's the dictionary (builtin.dic) that does this. JAWS has a similar behaviour.

This spelling of capital letters makes reading almost impossible because

This is completely unrelated to any settings I am aware of in NVDA.
This may be an NVDA behavior because I tried reading the word with three

Hello everyone,
I upgraded to Windows 10 today with a little help from my daughter as
NVDA was not speaking during restarts.
The only problem I encountered so far is that my PDF files open in
Microsoft Edge and of course, NVDA can't read them. They appear as
blank documents. In Windows 7 this was not so.
How can I again open my PDF files so can I can read them?

One more question:
How can I go back to Windows 7 if I wanted to?
I would appreciate your inputs.

Hi Brian
Caps within words is used a lot in programming where it is known as CamelCase, due to the humps.

Cheers

Well they should not put caps in the middle of words. I'd imagine it should be possible to find some expression to enter into the dictionary of nvda that applies to the synth to more or less stop this, though I have to say I've never tried it as I don't seem to encounter many people putting caps in the middle of words.

hi every one.
how can set nvda not sensitive to capital letters?
beginning of words with capital letters does not cause a problem and
in most cases nvda reads the words properly.
but unfortunately when someone write the words with many capital
letters even in the middle and end of the words nvda reads the
sentences and in many cases leter by letter and i could not understand
my skype messages and emails?
what should i do to solve this problem?
thanks and god bless you all.

Re: ergent, nvda is sensitive to capital letters:

One advantage of setting Capslock to be an NVDA modifier key, you have to press it ttwice to engage the capslock function. You could also set the capital pitch change up in the voice dialog so the voice rises when you type a capital letter and setting NVDA to beep if you enter a shifted letter whilst capslock is on soon alerts you.

Cheers
Chris

Hi, Gene,

I have to be careful too because this keyboard has all the keys close together so I have to make sure I don't accidentally press the caps lock key.

I am one of the offenders. I often have spell check on when I do these emails and it alerts me at the end of capitalisation errors, but the I or i I tend to leave as they are. It very much depends on how you have capital indication on. In Espeak for example there are several things, like bleeps, intonation and say cap. I use intonation, and not too much of it. Of course when Capitals are all over the please such as oN tHIS bIT it affects that actual sound of the words as well, and this is what is heard when others caps are reversed.

The funniest thing for me is when people don't capitalize the letter i when they're talking about themselves. The screen readers, most of them at least, pronounce the i all out of flow and it sounds like undue emphasis. I really don't want NVDA telling its voices not to speak those things that way, as it's a great way to be told when somebody isn't using capitalization properly. I'm weird, and I know it!

Nvda can be set to alert to you accidentally reversing the caps key by having lock on, it gives a piercing bleep sound.
However this does not help the original person as its his mates who are doing it.

Re: nvda and microsoft access:

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

I'd be interested in this as the fields at the moment have the old issue of cursoring and deleting being silent.
I regularly use an old database created in it with nvda, and the buttons etc, all seem to work, its than fields entry that does not. I'm sure there are also issues on design views though. In this database the visual basic bits although editable do seem to me to have problems with the navigation in the editor when you need to change something and be sure the layout and syntax is correct.

of course most modern Office packages only come with runtimes these days, you need te pro version to actually write and modify databases on different templates.
I have a copy of 2002 here but it is not easy to get that to work on the newer windows versions as for a start, The newer access scheme seems to make it lock up on input fields.

also the screen resolution means it has to be run in some form of compatibility mode, our it looks blocky and overlaps the edge of the screen.
