Hi.  I ended up cancelling the installation when the message about the older version of Windows came up.  I downloaded the "Windows 10 app essentials" add-on from the NVDA add-ons website.  I haven't used the NVDA add-on updater.

Are you actually sure that One Core is what is speaking? SAPI5 David sounds a lot like One Core David.

Also, when you go to the NVDA speech dialog (NVDA+ctrl+s), what synth is showing as chosen?

Re: NVDA Cursors tutorial.

Are you coming from using Jaws by chance?  If so, then I'd first recommend reading the Switching from Jaws to NVDA guide, which is free and available from:  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda-community/wiki/SwitchingFromJawsToNVDA

It covers the equivalents of the various Jaws cursor and other features that users coming from Jaws will be familiar with.

Kind regards

Hello!

Yes, as Gene mentioned, NV Access sell our own training material for NVDA.  I would recommend starting with the Basic Training for NVDA module.  It is $32 AUD for the electronic text version, $48 AUD for the audio version and $65 for hardcopy Braille (delivered anywhere in the world).  We also have a suite of material for Microsoft Office, or you can purchase everything together, along with telephone support in the NVDA Productivity Bundle.

All of those options are at: https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/

Kind regards

Quentin.

They are only for a desk top user as that is what I use.

The main website where they are is found at http://www.accessibilitycentral.net

Any of the pages that mention nvda will link you to the nvda tutorials inside of the website. You will see what I mean when you pick one.

They are only in English as that is what I speak..

Also there is a link to the nvda shop on every page where you can buy material written and audio for a cost which Quentin sells from NVACCESS.

The pages will also point you towards other stuff as well.

Re: Windows OneCore voices don't appear correctly in the list of synthesizers

Quentin Christensen

Are you using any NVDA add-ons?  If so, if you press NVDA+Q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" does it make a difference?

My reading of the thread is that everything is working - OneCore Voices are working and reading just fine, it's just that they aren't listed in the Synthesizer dialog, correct?

(In which case, it's still a puzzle, but at least not preventing you from using your computer, which is the main thing).

Have you restarted your computer lately?  As in restart from the Windows start menu, not just closed the lid (if you have a laptop)?  Computers can go a long time these days without properly restarting, but every now and then bugs creep in which a restart fixes.

Do you have NVDA set to start automatically?  If so, if you press CONTROL+ALT+N to restart NVDA, is OneCore listed then?  The only thing I can think of is whether something hasn't finished loading by the time NVDA starts, and although the synthesizer works fine, for some reason the synthesizer dialog isn't getting a full list of available synthesizers...

Otherwise I can't think of what it could be offhand.

Hi Heaven,

This might be a bit long to work through in time for this job application, but if PowerPoint is something you need for work and you'd like to build your skills up on it, NV Access have recently published the "Microsoft PowerPoint with NVDA" training module, which is available from: https://www.nvaccess.org/product/microsoft-powerpoint-with-nvda-ebook/

Re: NVDA read-to-end

Quentin Christensen

Are you using NVDA in desktop keyboard layout or laptop keyboard layout?  NVDA+down arrow is the Desktop layout keystroke to read to end.  NVDA+a is the laptop keyboard layout shortcut.

To make it a bit more confusing, NVDA+down arrow, in laptop keyboard layout, moves the review cursor to the next line, so if you are in laptop layout and press that keystroke, it will seem like you've entered the read to end command and NVDA is simply reading the next line down and then stopping.

If you are definitely in desktop keyboard layout and NVDA is stopping partway through a paragraph, could you please give a bit more information about the exact program you are in or where it does and does not work?

Kind regards

Quentin.

So yes, the built-in Notepad can be used to take notes.
You may have created a good note-taking environment when you divide the
topics into different folders.
But people don't take notes that way. And this is not a portable method.
You are reading an article on any website. You want to save the article
somewhere. Perhaps there are sentences to underline.
Nothing on the web is likely to stay the way you first found it. Some
contents die. And those contents can be very important.
This is why people use applications such as OneNote and Evernote.
You can tag notes in those applications, you can save websites content ,
and you can connect between notes...
These features are not what notepad supports.
And most of these apps also have a mobile app.
This way, people can take new notes, update, delete, etc., even while on
the go.
If you know of such an application, please let me know.
If there is still no note-taking application available, I'll write it in
Golang.
I can not believe this. Maybe I've tested 10 apps and none of them are
compatible with screen readers. We are in the 21st century. It's so scary.

Hi,

I see. The most likely explanation is that, somewhere in the installation process, the add-on thinks you are running an older Windows 10 release, which isn’t clearly the case.

I don't know bout the other commands you are discussing, I don't use Outlook. But alt 1 through 6 are JAWS commands. The NVDA add-on uses similar alt plus number commands. Such commands have been used by JAWS in various e-mail programs for years. And sighted people can see all these fields and don't need such commands.

I suppose I could give that a try, but really, these are keystroke commands native to Outlook itself so in theory, an add-on shouldn’t be needed. That and they do work perfectly well with Jaws.

Ok. So I first checked the add-ons I did have installed and low-and-behold,
they were all incompatible with this version of NVDA (most current version).
I went ahead and uninstalled them and did a restart of NVDA.

Now, running NVDA wit no add-ons installed, it appears that I can now do the
alt+I and alt+U to get to the location and subject fields in both the
calendar and messages of Outlook, but the alt+` (grauv) to jump to either
message body or notes section in either the calendar or contact entry etc.
still doesn’t work anywhere. Same goes for the Alt+1 through 6 on the top
number row. Alt+7 invokes some weird mouse command

I mean, I’m not being hyperbolic when I say I send countless emails a day
and am always in the calendar checking this, doing that, creating etc. so
for me and my workflow, this really is sort of a dealbreaker. Eliminating I
don’t know how many tabs and shift tabs throughout the day for example is
invaluable for my time and sanity with these keystrokes.

I’d like to use NVDA more in my business, but without this functionality, it
would be tough.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Hello list,

I’m mainly a Jaws user, but time to time, I use NVDA for the odd task or if
Jaws is giving me problems or whatever.

I’m also a heavy Outlook user (V 2016). I’m noticing an issue with certain
keystroke commands that appear to conflict with NVDA and Outlook and was
wondering if it’s just me or if it really is an issue for others.

For example, alt+I while in a calendar will take you to the location field
where you can enter in address location of the appointment. Alt+U takes you
to the subject field be it in a calendar appointment or message. Alt+`
(grov) takes you to the message field/notes section. Alt+1 or 2 or 3 etc.
takes you to the various header fields like from, to, cc, bcc, subject…
These all work fine with Jaws and to the best of my knowledge, are not
screen reader specific commands, but rather Outlook’s.

These commands don’t appear to work with NVDA however. They seem to invoke
some mouse commands or just don’t work period.

I use Outlook all day for my business which is very email and
calendar-centric. So, being able to use shortcuts like these are a huge
time saver and really essential for how I work.

Am I perhaps missing something or is this really an NVDA compatibility
issue?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

It is checked by default. You may want to chedk it but its already on if you didn't change it.

Also, from the description in the manual, I doubt the command is relevant. Of course, you may want to try toggling it to see what happens. Description follows:
Handle keys from other applications
This option allows the user to control if key presses generated by applications such as on-screen keyboards and speech recognition software should be processed by NVDA. This option is on by default, though certain users may wish to turn this off, such as those typing Vietnamese with the UniKey typing software as it will cause incorrect character input.

Hi

How can I Access the Settings of the Braille Display Active star from Handytech? I have installed he undiversal Driver and also coppied the necessary braile-driver-files from the NVDA Version which they gave me in their start pagage stick. The combination between the keys   1 and 8. Does not work. I also can’t update the Firmware of he Display. Is there any addon which can solve that?

I am Looking foreward for your solution.

Do yu want to pay something? I don't know what is available in general, but NVDA sells instructional material about NVDA and it includes using different methods of navigation. I haven't heard the material so I can't comment on it, but as I recall, a list member a number of weeks ago, gave a link to a sample of the material on sale which deals with one way of navigation using NVDA.

Try putting NVDA to sleep before having Text Expander do something. then wake it up after it does it. The toggle is control shift s for sleep and as I said, it’s a toggle.

Subject: [nvda] Textexpander freezes my keyboard

hi there

I'm using NVDA for a while. I still got a little bit of sight.

I'm using a program called textexpander. With a few letters it pastes a whole code, email or what kind of content for me. Like ninvoice pastes my pre-made email for a new invoice.

But if i got nvda running, than my keyboard freezes. I can use my mouse and go to othere programs, but when i want to use my keyboard i need to restart my computer agan.

Anyone with a solution?
