Re: Problem enter thunderbird with NVDA

It may be that you were working in options and didn't close the options window. I don't know why thunderbird does this and if it is a problem for sighted users. But I found that if you do something in options, you must close that window with control f4 after you finish. Then you will return to the main window and the next time you open the program, you will be in the main window. But if you work in options, then close the program with alt f4, when you open it again, you will be in the options window. So open the program, close the optionns window with control f4, then do whatever you want in the main window. Then close the program in the usual way. The next time you open it, you will be in the main window.

had a problem. After I enter the program, I hear task bar. If I tab
once I hear options and I have to used a sight person to click at the
top to get to the in box, or all mail etc. I have tried using the

Re: Capslock as modifier

Gene there are two settings mentioned in the thread, which initially sound similar, but work differently to each other:

In NVDA's keyboard settings there is an option "Beep if typing lowercase letters when caps lock is on".  That option beeps when caps lock is on AND you then press SHIFT and type a letter (which will come out lowercase).  That option works regardless of your keyboard echo settings.

In NVDA'S speech settings there is an option "Beep for capitals".  With that on whenever you arrow to a capital letter or type a capital letter, NVDA will beep, however it only does this when reading the letter, so it only reads while typing if speak typed characters is enabled.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi

My settings are: synth set to beep if capital letter, speak typed characters
off, speak typed words on.

This does not beep when typing CAPITAL LETTERS, either with capslock on or
when using shift with caps lock off.  Using shift with caps lock on does
produce a beep.  In other words, the synthesizer setting that indicates
capital letters only works when typing if Speak typed characters is on.

I'm using Windows 10 2004 and NVDA 2020.2

I just tested this and it beeps when speak typed characters is on or off.

It does it when speak words is on or off as well, so the screen-reader could

be silent and it would still beep.

It should still beep when typing a lowercase letter with caps lock on - so

if you have double pressed the caps lock key and caps lock is on.  If you

then press SHIFT and type a letter (which will come out lowercase) NVDA will

beep.

In NVDA'S speech settings there is an option "Beep for capitals".  With that

on whenever you arrow to a capital or type a capital letter, NVDA will beep,

however it only does this when reading the letter, so it only reads when

typing, if speak typed characters is enabled.

Follow-up: so what will happen to Joseph Lee's add-ons when he steps back

Hi all,

Thanks for the encouragements. I plan to step back from NVDA community once I hear that I can start studying for master’s degree (not this fall, as I’m still an undergraduate and I need to apply for graduate school).

So what will happen to my add-ons in the meantime:

  • Add-on Updater: as I noted last night, it’ll be maintained until NVDA itself gains this add-on’s ability.
  • Object Location Tones: the last release from me will be sent early next year.
  • StationPlaylist: version 20.09.x is a long-term support release for Studio 5.20 users and will continue to use older NVDA technologies. Going forward, stable releases (20.10 and later) will rely exclusively on recent NVDA changes and will support Studio 5.30 or later. The full impact won’t be felt until next year, however. Also, I’ll hand over this add-on to the community for further development and maintenance effective June 30, 2021, and to prepare for this, 20.09.x support will end in April 2021 and stable version to follow shortly after.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: in January 2021, two things will happen: end of support for Windows 10 Version 1909 from this add-on, and the add-on will require NVDA 2020.3 or later. Both align with add-on support policy.
  • Other add-ons will see updates from time to time, but there might be a possibility that they too will be handed over to the community for further development.

Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Few questions regarding the Place Markers add-on

Amir

To be honest, I'm not sure if the Place Markers add-on works properly at least with regards to the questions I asked. Sometimes it places the cursor a couple of lines above or below the exact position required, and it tends to announce the cursor coordinates each time it locates a mark which is really verbose and distracting. So, IMO, it also requires more fine-tuning.

Best,
Amir

Yes, all the browser marks will be applied to all domains. I know that configuration is not very intuitive at this point, but convenient configuration windows require a lot of UI work, which I don't have much time or passion for. If we have some kind of UI for configuring browser marks, then we'd be able to specify domain name or regular expression for domain name, specific for each mark. I don't know yet how to extract domain name from currently displayed web page, but PlaceMarks add-on does it, so I assume I can copy their way. But in any case it requires a lot of work.

Of course, I should brush up on my knowledge of regular expressions, but maybe it should become easier to configure -- similar to what JAWS does. And if you don't discriminate based on domain, do you mean that something like the "Download" link gets detected on all websites containing this link with the exact form and spelling? Since I use various place markers on a wide range of websites, ideally I don't like to have such unexpected mark detections so as to make navigation faster and more focused.
Yet again, thanks for releasing such useful add-ons -- keep up the good work!

In the absence of other replies, let me tell you about my add-on BrowserNav. One of the features is what I called browser marks. You can configure a regular expression to match any words that you want to be able to find on web pages and jump to them quickly using J or Shift+J command. I was thinking of Jaws bookmarks when I designed this feature. Unlike Jaws it doesn't discriminate on the domain name, that is the whole regexp is being applied to all web pages. But it doesn't seem to cause problems for me. So to summarize, it's not exactly what you're looking for , but close enough, so might want to give it a try.

Folks, having used the Place Markers feature in JAWS for a long time, I'd like to know if the Place Markers add-on for NVDA can provide an equal experience. Specifically:
1. Is it possible to create a place marker for a page and expect it to work on all pages belonging to that domain? For instance, I download a lot of podcasts and audio files from npr.org. With JAWS I've created a place marker for the Download link on one page and, via a check box, have set it up in a way that it works on all pages belonging to npr.org.
2. Crucially, can place markers be anchored to one or more words on a page so that they can always move us to the proper/expected location regardless of any modifications on that page? Again JAWS can do it by asking for a word or phrase to which a place marker should be anchored. Like the first one, this is also optional.

I'm glad you have a sense of what you should do and not do and don't overburden yourself, given the time and energy you have and various demands on both. Many people take on more than they should and burn out or don't do anything well. Knowing how to pace yourself and aportion your time and leaving some time just for yourself to do with as you wish are very important and I'm glad to see that you look out for yourself rather than let a sense of unreasonable obligation work against you.

Joseph,

I know that you know that your NVDA fans will miss you and the thoughtful respectful support that you have given all of us for a long time. You have solved so many of my NVDA issues with a single post.

However, and not knowing your graduate program field, I would agree with those who have recommended stepping back from your support work until you have a clear sense of what the next step in your education will demand. Advice comes from someone who has done multiple trips back to the classroom. These have each provided me with the lesson that in every case, the new step starts off demanding more than is expected. You can always discover that you do have time and then you can choose to return to your NVDA fans, or just use the packets of time to get all you can from the new program.

Best of luck and have fun with the next step,

I don't understand. What makes you say it's not useful anymore?

I'm using the Espeak voices.

Hi. While Espeak does ship with NVDA the default synthesizer is Windows Onecore from Microsoft. Are you actually using the Espeak voices or the Onecore voices?

Thanks for the reply. I use the synthesizer that comes with nvda, think it is Espeak.

Hettie,

First, I do recall encountering this issue with LibreOffice but this was many years ago. I'll give it a try with NVDA 2020.2 with LibreOffice 7.0, which was recently released. Also, which synthesizer are you using? I ask because Acapela recently released a new version of its NVDA driver which they report corrects a read all issue although they did not go into specifics as to what the problem actually was.

Hi Quintin

After trying the read-to-end in thunderbird and wordpad it seems to be a problem with LibreOffice. I can't upgrade to Microsoft Office 10 and tried LibreOffice  as an alternative as it has a word processor as well as a spread sheet unction. Wordpad can perform all I need but I need another program that can read and work with Excel, anyone has ideas of what other accessible software I can use?

Thanks

Are you using NVDA in desktop keyboard layout or laptop keyboard layout?  NVDA+down arrow is the Desktop layout keystroke to read to end.  NVDA+a is the laptop keyboard layout shortcut.

To make it a bit more confusing, NVDA+down arrow, in laptop keyboard layout, moves the review cursor to the next line, so if you are in laptop layout and press that keystroke, it will seem like you've entered the read to end command and NVDA is simply reading the next line down and then stopping.

If you are definitely in desktop keyboard layout and NVDA is stopping partway through a paragraph, could you please give a bit more information about the exact program you are in or where it does and does not work?

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi all

Sorry, I didn't pay attention when this topic was discussed in earlier posts as I haven't come accross that problem then.

Now however I do experience nvda reading to the end of the paragraph when pressing the nvda + down-arrow keys. Unfortunately I haven't seen a post with the solution. Can you please help ?

Thanks.

Hello,

Go to the NVDA icon in the systray by pressing Windows-B (on your Mac keyboard Option-B), hit the letter N until you come to NVDA and press Enter
