Re: NVDA reading names of selected files in a file list

Hello Quentin!

Ther is a add-on, develloped by me, that allows the reading of status bar in Windows 10 File explorer...

You can get it at:

https://www.tiflotecnia.net/ZExplorer.nvda-addon

The option that I think Janet wants does not exist in NVDA, meaning that NVDA have no way to read the name of selected files...

One thing you can do, is use NVDA's next and previous object commands (NVDA+numpad 4 / NVDA+shift+left arrow for previous, NVDA+numpad 6 / NVDA+shift+right arrow for next).  That will move object navigation through the items in the list.  One quirk is it won't announce "selected" for items which are selected, but will announce "not selected" for items which are not selected.  (It's not so much a bug as, 99% of the time people are moving through the list one item at a time and don't want to hear every item as selected).

StationPlaylist add-on 20.10 released, version 20.11 will require NVDA 2020.1 or later 3AddonRelease

Hello everyone,

StationPlaylist add-on 20.10 is now available. This release is applicable for anyone using 20.09.0 (initial 20.09 release) who decided to not update to 20.09.1-LTS or those using Studio 5.30 or later. In case you did install 20.09.1-LTS but would like to switch back to stable update channel, the direct download link for 20.10 is:

https://github.com/josephsl/stationPlaylist/releases/download/20.10/stationPlaylist-20.10.nvda-addon

This release includes internal settings file format changes (as a result, you can’t downgrade) and fixes an issue where NVDA will say “unavailable” when trying to switch to Studio when it is minimized to system tray. Also, this release is the last stable version to be compatible with NVDA 2019.3 – upcoming version 20.11 (November) will require NVDA 2020.1 (and a heads up: early next year, a stable version of this add-on will be released that will absolutely require upcoming NVDA 2020.3).

Cheers,

Joseph

I don't know what Windows 10 does, Windows 7 displays a status line you can read that tells you the number of files selected.

As I recall, the NVDA command to read what is selected only applies to text.

This is not a question related to NVDA in any meaningful way.  If the conversation is to be extended, it should be done on the Chat Subgroup.

I will, however, suggest you take a look at the topic from August on the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group entitled, Pontes Media Downloader.

Hi Ralf,

Indeed, I had thought of that which is why I tried outlook in safe mode. No
go. See my previous message where the culprit proved to be a corrupt
configuration file.

Hi Brian and all,

Many thanks and I do plan to install the beta. However, I was able to fix the problem. My configuration profile of outlook had gotten corrupted. I deleted it and I have outlook back.

Rob,

How does this work? I don't see the option for cell background color listed in the documentation, and also when there is no text to read, will NVDA announce anything about that cell?

Hi,

It’ll be left as is – running the beta unless you start the portable copy and choose to update to 2020.3 (final release).

Cheers,

If you download the beta: no. If you install the beta: yes.

You can download and run the installation file for the beta. At that point you will have three options: install, create portable, or continue running.

If you install, it will upgrade your installed copy to the beta.

If you create a portable, it will make a portable copy that you can run as an alternative to your installed version, and which is entirely self-contained and won't mess with your installed copy.

Lastly, you can "continue running", which will just keep running the copy of NVDA used in the installer, which is the beta. You won't be able to save settings or gestures in that one, but it will give you a one-time style test of the beta.

Your best bet is to create a portable and use that to play with and test the beta.
