Re: Masked URLs in E-mail messages

Hi,
the way I check those things is to use the object navigation. Focus the link, nvda+numpad8, nvda+numpad5 three times to copy the text if the link is too complicated and followup paste in notepad to inspect it more closely. Works in Thunderbird, haven't checked it elsewhere. Also, you can try to check the mail in plain text and it might show you the href as well. HTH, Dzhovani

Don't you get repetition if you just press enter? I don't use JAWS but if I press enter and do nothing else, I get a number of repetitions of the subject line.

I have my keyboard set to skim mode so all I have to do is press the up arrow and the message is read out. I haven't had to do that too often though because most of the messages are read out once I hit the enter key. Rosemarie

I also have recently installed Thunderbird 78.2.2.0. It works quite well. I am seeing only one major issue. When scrolling through messages within a folder (that is without opening any of them,) the from field of the header is read twice. I see by some posts on this and other lists, that people aren't seeing this but they are seeing other issues. I wonder if there is some sort of underlying issue in the way in which NVDA handles this update that manifest itself in different ways on different systems depending upon how Thunderbird is configured.

Heavens! Has skype become more and more less accessible? I don’t use it anymore. I’ve used it with win 7 a little with an earlier version of NVDA. I haven’t used it since 2015. I don’t think I want to use it anymore. I use facetime on the Ipad instead. No more skype for this grey duck! Lol.

The only way I can stop the time from being displayed in the headers is to not have the date displayed. You may well have messages organized by date. I doubt turning this off would work because you said the announcement is heard when you open a message and this affects the headers displayed before you open it.

I don't know why you hear that. I don't. Once you open a message, wait a moment, then use the read to end command. That should cause the message body to be read and interrupt or avoid unnecessary speech or unwanted repetition of one or more headers.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
You may be able to stop the field that shows the time a message was sent or received, I'm not sure which, and that might stop the behavior. I'll play around and see if I can turn it off. Gene

Re: NVDA and security info
Well if its on their system, nvda will have to be installed with admin
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
permitions, but after that you can modify it and install addons, etc as you would usually do since its in your user folder. Now, as for the drivers, any drivers etc for your display will need to be installed in your account with admin permitions to. Any big updates to nvda etc will need admin permitions but if they are willing then you won't have a problem.

Hello all, I was a loyal Window-Eyes user for more than 20 years, but when it was bought out, I didn’t want anything to do with it. That’s when I switched to NVDA. So far I have been very pleased. However, I am disappointed that NVDA cannot perform this basic function. As for the add-on, as others have said, there needs to be some up-to-date supporting documentation. And, when I went to install it yesterday, I got a message indicating that it is not compatible with the newest version of NVDA. For philosophical and financial reasons, I will not use JAWS. Fortunately, at this time, selecting and manipulating files from a list is not something I have to do regularly. I will try some of the work-arounds some have mentioned; perhaps Narrator can do this? Thanks for the comments and suggestions, Janet

The messages I get from entities I routinely do business with all contain click-through links that use text describing what it is you're clicking through to, whether that's a reference page, product, etc. I never even look at the URLs for those, because the source is trustworthy. There is the very rare occasion I need to do this, but if push came to shove and I couldn't see it, I'd do what was suggested earlier with copying the link location and pasting it in Notepad or similar. I just very very seldom have any reason to check links from sources I know to be trustworthy, and if I have even the slightest doubt regarding the source I won't touch the URLs in the e-mail anyway; it goes straight to trash. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings unintentionally. ~ Oscar Wilde

Re: Masked URLs in E-mail messages

I wonder if you can use the JAWS mouseover command to find and move to the line where the address is shown. But if you are going to do that, you might as well use the context menu with the shortcut key provided, then use the read clipboard command your screen-reader provides. They are both about as much work.
