Numpad Nav Mode

  • Author: Luke Davis (Open Source Systems, Ltd.)
  • Download stable version

Numpad Nav Mode is an NVDA add-on, which allows you to easily switch your keyboard's numpad between NVDA's navigation controls and the non-screenreader Windows navigation controls.

The normal functions of the PC number pad, with numlock off, are: page up, page down, home, end, four-way arrow keys, and a delete key. But NVDA completely takes over the numpad, to provide review keys, mouse controls, and object navigation controls. This is true even in laptop keyboard mode, which duplicates those functions on non-numpad keys for those who do not have a numpad.

However some users do have a numpad on their laptop, and would prefer to use it for Windows navigation purposes, especially because some laptops do not provide home, end, or other such keys. That is where this add-on can help. Additionally, some desktop users may sometimes find it convenient to use the numpad for those keyboard functions rather than the normal keys, which this add-on enables.

How it works

With numlock off, no matter what keyboard layout you are using, this add-on will let you press Alt+NVDA+NumpadPlus (which is usually the long key second up on the right), to quickly and easily switch between the normal NVDA navigation controls, and the classic Windows navigation controls. This key can be remapped under Input Gestures, in the Input section.

Note that this add-on doesn't disable the use of numpad insert as an NVDA modifier, if you have it set as such. If you want that feature, please let me know, although you can manually turn off numpad insert as a modifier in NVDA keyboard settings.

If you would prefer to have NVDA start with the Windows nav mode active by default, you can configure that in NVDA configuration. Go to NVDA's preferences, then settings, and find the Numpad Nav Mode settings panel. There you will be able to select a checkbox to turn Windows Nav Mode on by default when you start NVDA. To get there quickly, press NVDA+N, P, S, then N one or more times until you hear "Numpad Nav Mode".

New features

I encourage you to email with any feature suggestions, or other use cases that I haven't listed here, or just to let me know you find the add-on useful!

Inspiration

This add-on was the direct result of requests I've seen from users over the years, and a GitHub discussion in #9549. With thanks to @Qchristensen and @feerrenrut.

symbols don't get spoken despite being added to both lists

Hi,
I've just started to learn esperanto, which has some special symbols. I added the first one, which is translated in one specific vowel and it worked finge. I added another which gets translated into a group of letters and it doesn't get spoken. I tried to add it to the standard dictionary. But that doesn't work either. In the symbol dialogue, I set the level to "all" and also the "gets send to speech" to "always.
What could be the problem?

With that in mind, it seems like this could be evolved even further. Is the technology available such that NVDA could try to not only recognize text from the app but ascertain the structure of the user interface, perhaps organizing things into form elements like buttons, text fields etc and then presenting them in the same element browser we use for web pages?
Have you heard about Sibiac (
http://www.azslow.com/index.php?topic=372.0)?
I'm personally not a musician, so I haven't tested, but some people
reports great success with it and it more or less does what you've asked
for.

Barring that, perhaps a
more immediately reachable upgrade would be different actions we can
take on items in the OCR result. For example, instead of just the option
to hit enter to invoke something, what about a Context menu that lets
you invoke it or simply position the mouse cursor where that element was
found?

It is possible already. To position your mouse on the recognized item you
just need to press NVDA+numpad Slash to route the mouse to the review
cursor position. After that you can perform any mouse operation.

Hi.

Regarding a reliable method of solving captchas, I am afraid you may struggle. It's been discussed on this group in the past, but the solutions that were working haven't been maintained as browsers are updated.

Regarding your keyboard, it sounds like the internal keyboard is damaged. The best thing to do would be to have the keyboard replaced. This should not cost too much, in my experience it's not cost more than £25 to £50 in the past via a local competent computer shop.

Very best wishes,

Mo.

Re: Edge and/or NVDA crashes

I wander if this thing has to do with waterfox and its crashes, the brouser does actually hang on a lot of pages.

Could this behaviour seen on edge happen because of nvda, so far the main dev is not sure what has changed in the latest version between 08 and 09 because all the updates were simple updates and without addons like my script blocker things crash but faster.

Either the program hangs or it hangs and nvda hangs to till waterfox is closed with narator.

I thought it was my cpu type or firmware but now I am not sure.

Hi all,

when I work with edit fields or combo boxes in Edge NVDA or Edge often
crashes. I'm not sure which of the programs causes the issue. NVDA is
just silent when it happens.

Sometimes I can restart NVDA by pressing a shortcut I set up and then it
works again. But it also can happen that NVDA does not restart. Then it
usually helps to start and close Narrator (CTRL+WINDOWS+ENTER) and that
seems to help NVDA to speak again.

Mostly I'm experiencing these crashes when I'm writing a mail on
gmail.com or when I'm uploading tracks on Soundcloud.

While writing this message, I had to restart NVDA six times cause it
stopped working.

I use Windows 10, latest stable version of Edge and NVDA 2020.2.

Does anyone know what the reason could be? It is not nice! :)

Best

Denis

Hello, Bhavya...

The answer to your first question, as far as I know, is..no.
You already mentioned VLC...I don't think you'll find a better video player for pC than that. It is an amazingly versatile programme whose only real drawback may be the interface that makes it occasionally difficult to carry out certain tasks of which it is perfectly capable.

Question number 2 -- it sounds like you are looking for a pre-amp? I believe this is accomplishable, though you may needa plugin.
the foobar documentation is fairly extensive.

Indeed they are.  The sad thing is that they really are not easy to learn or understand.  Once you do they seem far more "natural" but you'll even find yourself "missing something" or "catching something you don't want" without extensive testing ahead of deployment.

I would love to know the mind that came up with regular expressions, because they're the closest things I know of to "human filtering" because you build them by thinking, very carefully, about all the alternatives and sometimes all the alternatives are huge in number, alternative forms, or both.
