Hi.

It does indeed work, but it requires that you are running the beta for now. It will be part of the next stable version of NVDA. I just used it to set NVDA+J as my mute key.

What I find is that:
It doesn't happen when I use JAWS and Edge.
It seems not to be Chromium related. In Chrome I don't have these issues.
Before it crashes input fields often behave strange. I'm not able to set the focus to a certain letter etc. At least, NVDA doesn't give responsive information anymore.

Could this behaviour seen on edge happen because of nvda, so far the
main dev is not sure what has changed in the latest version between 08
and 09 because all the updates were simple updates and without addons
like my script blocker things crash but faster.

Either the program hangs or it hangs and nvda hangs to till waterfox is
closed with narator.

I thought it was my cpu type or firmware but now I am not sure.

Re: Backup files with NVDA

Tony Ballou

howdy folks,

Sorry about the length of this post, but I think the information will be helpful to most of you out here.

Most times using copying and pasting files through either this PC or file explorer is the easiest way to backup files and for the most part it works without a hitch.

However, There are those situations where sometimes files won’t copy because for a reason totally unbeknownst to me you will get a destination path too long message and you’ll have to reduce the file name, even though windows allows you to copy files well beyond the old 8.3 format and extension conventions. There’s  also the cannot read from source disc error and the cannot write to disc error. Those errors can mean that your hard drive may be in some trouble.

To avoid problems like these, you can download a free file copying utility called unstoppable copier. It’s up to version 5.2, works on all windows systems, and is totally accessible with NVDA. The copying process is slower than using the  basic copying and pasting methods through this PC and file explorer, however, the advantage of using this utility is that it not only copies the file, it also scans and removes anything that would cause the file to become truncated or corrupt. It also can Recover files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made usable even if some parts were not recoverable in the end. To get this utility go to

http://www.roadkil.net/

I was able to completely repair and successfully reformat 2 external hard drives using this program. Hope this helps some of you folks out there and sorry about the length.

How do You backup files? Have You backup files manually, or do You use
some software?

And also, which software is accessible with NVDA?

Thank You.

Hi Marco,
I had the same problem.
I wrote to both this list and the QWS list regarding it, and also corresponded privately with James and NVAccess.
There is a workaround that you can use until a definitive fix is released. It involves changing something in the registry, so if you're comfortable with that, let me know off list and I'll send you the reg file.
Cheers,
Damien.

I know there are gaps in the accessibility of Access itself, and probably in NVDA's support for it as well since not many people use it now.  In any case, here is Microsoft's page of keystrokes for Access: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/keyboard-shortcuts-for-access-70a673e4-4f7b-4300-b8e5-3320fa6606e2

Re: Different profiles for different instances of the same program?

Quentin Christensen

Also just to pick up one point Pranav made - profiles triggered by an application automatically get activated when that program has focus and deactivated when the program no longer has focus (when you alt+tab to another program for instance).  If you manually trigger a profile, even if it is one which is otherwise triggered by an app, it will be active until you manually deactivate it.

So as others have noted, you can have different profiles you use for different instances of the one program, but you will need to manually activate them.  There is a longstanding issue open for having configuration profiles for different websites (the main use which springs to my mind for multiple configurations for one app) https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4442 however it is a lot more complex than it at first seems.  I'd encourage you to subscribe to that issue (and comment on it if you can add something) if you are interested in that specifically.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: NVDA 2020.3 Beta 4 now available

Quentin Christensen

Hi Louise,

Replying in the groups.io web editor to test your issues.  Firstly, if you installed the beta and didn't intend to, you can either leave it, and it will update to the release candidate(s) as available.  Or you can download NVDA 2020.2 again from https://www.nvaccess.org/download/ and install it.  The installer will advise that you are installing an older version and warn you against that.  I don't think there should be any problem doing that.

To your questions:

1) I'm guessing you can't press escape to go to Browse mode when you are in the editor to write your message?  I found in the subject title I could press escape to go to browse mode and enter to go back to focus mode.  In the editor, you'll notice NVDA reports "Application".  The editor is marked up as an ARIA application - basically it wants to be treated more like a desktop app, so some keys get treated differently.  You can still change from browse to focus mode and back using NVDA+SPACEBAR.

2) Reading words twice when they have punctuation at the end.  Is that using Chrome?  I found in Firefox moving by word skips over punctuation (ie it always jumps to the start of the next word) but in Chrome and other places, the focus moves from the start of the word to in between the word and the punctuation.  In Chrome it then reads the word again.  I couldn't find an issue for this so I've created one: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/11727

3) I couldn't replicate this, but it might be something with groups.io maybe?

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Using NVDA with Virtual Desktop Environments

Well, the machine will be locked down to the company, but yeah, if its
a windows system you can use nvda on it though you will need an admin
to install it, not sure.

If this is not a windows vm though, you will have to use orca or something.
To be honest, what is the vm used for.
If its the company office and such, it may be easier to get on the
company's office at home program, and spend the cash on a pro plus
licence for office and installing it.
Of course that may mean having different profiles or email clients for
home and work or whatever, but you should be then able to access the
resources of company files yourself.
Finally, your company could just give you a locked down laptop or
workstation and you could have nvda on that and handle everything that
way.
My brother works for an enginiering company here.
Everything is done with a personal work laptop, and virtual machines on that.
Everyone gets 100gb of google storage for work related stuff including
mail database backups.
I have an aunt that did everything off an ms remote session and it did
have audio feedback.
If the company use custom software then thats different, but it may
simply be easier to access the server with the files and use an office
on your system for work.

Already provided, for Macrium Reflect, in my previous post.  That's what a "full system image" is - everything including the operating system part and all user accounts and their data.

No.

I would like to backup My music, images, installation files, everything in my folder.

But, You can write also, how to backup My OS too. :)

Re: Backup files with NVDA

This question gets asked again, and again, and again on both this group and the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group, and the answers never change.

I have written a tutorial on using Macrium Reflect to take full system image backups:   Using Macrium Reflect Free with a Screen Reader

Windows 10 includes a File History utility built-in for user data backups, and it's fully accessible, but it does not take full system images.

Searching the NVDA Group Archive on system image backup will return scads of discussions regarding backing up, as will  Searching the Windows 10 for Screen Reader Users Group Archive and there's plenty on the JAWS group, too.

Members really need to start searching archives before asking questions.

Re: Windows 10 clipboard manager

Hi,
This is clipboard history, not exactly a clipboard manager to deal with formatting and such.
As for NVDA, try with Windows 10 App Essentials add-on installed (lately I've become this add-on's salesman...).
As for JAWS, if using Widows 10 May 2020 Update (or later), you'll need most recent JAWS 2019 release, or better yet, JAWS 2020 for better functionality and compatibility.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: Backup files with NVDA

But do you want to back up only files such as documents, music, etc. or do you want to back up everything, including the files that make up the operating system so you can restore the operating system. One kind of backup, only files such as documents, music, etc. can be done very differently than a full backup or image.

I think personally backup everything without difference.

Or, files from my harddrive on my computer to my external harddrive.

Hello.

I have question dear NVDA users.

How do You backup files? Have You backup files manually, or do You use
some software?
What files are you talking about?

And also, which software is accessible with NVDA?
Give a shot to the PRG that you would like to use and report back if you
have issue(s) accessing them.
