Go into the Windows volume control. Make sure that the system volume and NVDA are at the same level.

NVDA volume louder on lock screen/secure screens
Luke Robinett
Hi, The volume of NVDA speech is louder on the lock screen and other secure screens than when I’m in the normal desktop. To make sure the NVDA settings for the secure screens are the same as the normal settings, I’ve selected the option to use these settings on secure screens from the General settings section of NVDA, but the problem remains. I’ve also tried adjusting the Windows volume separately when in a secure screen but the issue just comes right back next time I’m in a secure screen. I only always use the same eSpeak synth and the synth volume is always set to 100%. Has anyone experienced this and can anyone think of troubleshooting steps I haven’t yet tried? Thanks.

Re: Backup files with NVDA
It is critically important that people understand that user data file backup (which is what has mostly been what has been mentioned on this topic) and full system image backups (which include the operating system and the user data for all users on that machine) are two completely different things.
It's actually a good idea to take both, but if you have to choose one it's the full system image backup, as it will snag everything you need to get yourself back up and running should you have something like a main drive failure, while a user data only backup will not. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 It’s hard waking up and realizing it’s not always black and white. ~ Kelley Boorn

Hi.
It does indeed work, but it requires that you are running the beta for now. It will be part of the next stable version of NVDA. I just used it to set NVDA+J as my mute key.

What I find is that: It doesn't happen when I use JAWS and Edge. It seems not to be Chromium related. In Chrome I don't have these issues. Before it crashes input fields often behave strange. I'm not able to set the focus to a certain letter etc. At least, NVDA doesn't give responsive information anymore. Am Mi., 30. Sept. 2020 um 05:37 Uhr schrieb Shaun Everiss <sm.everiss@...>:

Re: Backup files with NVDA
Tony Ballou
howdy folks,
Sorry about the length of this post, but I think the information will be helpful to most of you out here.
Most times using copying and pasting files through either this PC or file explorer is the easiest way to backup files and for the most part it works without a hitch.
However, There are those situations where sometimes files won’t copy because for a reason totally unbeknownst to me you will get a destination path too long message and you’ll have to reduce the file name, even though windows allows you to copy files well beyond the old 8.3 format and extension conventions. There’s also the cannot read from source disc error and the cannot write to disc error. Those errors can mean that your hard drive may be in some trouble.
To avoid problems like these, you can download a free file copying utility called unstoppable copier. It’s up to version 5.2, works on all windows systems, and is totally accessible with NVDA. The copying process is slower than using the basic copying and pasting methods through this PC and file explorer, however, the advantage of using this utility is that it not only copies the file, it also scans and removes anything that would cause the file to become truncated or corrupt. It also can Recover files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made usable even if some parts were not recoverable in the end. To get this utility go to http://www.roadkil.net/
I was able to completely repair and successfully reformat 2 external hard drives using this program. Hope this helps some of you folks out there and sorry about the length.
Tony

Hi Marco,

I had the same problem. I wrote to both this list and the QWS list regarding it, and also corresponded privately with James and NVAccess. There is a workaround that you can use until a definitive fix is released. It involves changing something in the registry, so if you're comfortable with that, let me know off list and I'll send you the reg file. Cheers, Damien.

Re: access
Quentin Christensen
I know there are gaps in the accessibility of Access itself, and probably in NVDA's support for it as well since not many people use it now. In any case, here is Microsoft's page of keystrokes for Access: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/keyboard-shortcuts-for-access-70a673e4-4f7b-4300-b8e5-3320fa6606e2 Quentin.

Re: Different profiles for different instances of the same program?
Quentin Christensen
Also just to pick up one point Pranav made - profiles triggered by an application automatically get activated when that program has focus and deactivated when the program no longer has focus (when you alt+tab to another program for instance). If you manually trigger a profile, even if it is one which is otherwise triggered by an app, it will be active until you manually deactivate it. So as others have noted, you can have different profiles you use for different instances of the one program, but you will need to manually activate them. There is a longstanding issue open for having configuration profiles for different websites (the main use which springs to my mind for multiple configurations for one app) https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4442 however it is a lot more complex than it at first seems. I'd encourage you to subscribe to that issue (and comment on it if you can add something) if you are interested in that specifically. Kind regards Quentin.

Re: NVDA 2020.3 Beta 4 now available
Quentin Christensen
Hi Louise,
Replying in the groups.io web editor to test your issues. Firstly, if you installed the beta and didn't intend to, you can either leave it, and it will update to the release candidate(s) as available. Or you can download NVDA 2020.2 again from https://www.nvaccess.org/download/ and install it. The installer will advise that you are installing an older version and warn you against that. I don't think there should be any problem doing that. To your questions: 1) I'm guessing you can't press escape to go to Browse mode when you are in the editor to write your message? I found in the subject title I could press escape to go to browse mode and enter to go back to focus mode. In the editor, you'll notice NVDA reports "Application". The editor is marked up as an ARIA application - basically it wants to be treated more like a desktop app, so some keys get treated differently. You can still change from browse to focus mode and back using NVDA+SPACEBAR. 2) Reading words twice when they have punctuation at the end. Is that using Chrome? I found in Firefox moving by word skips over punctuation (ie it always jumps to the start of the next word) but in Chrome and other places, the focus moves from the start of the word to in between the word and the punctuation. In Chrome it then reads the word again. I couldn't find an issue for this so I've created one: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/11727 3) I couldn't replicate this, but it might be something with groups.io maybe? Kind regards Quentin.

Well, the machine will be locked down to the company, but yeah, if its

a windows system you can use nvda on it though you will need an admin to install it, not sure. If this is not a windows vm though, you will have to use orca or something. To be honest, what is the vm used for. If its the company office and such, it may be easier to get on the company's office at home program, and spend the cash on a pro plus licence for office and installing it. Of course that may mean having different profiles or email clients for home and work or whatever, but you should be then able to access the resources of company files yourself. Finally, your company could just give you a locked down laptop or workstation and you could have nvda on that and handle everything that way. My brother works for an enginiering company here. Everything is done with a personal work laptop, and virtual machines on that. Everyone gets 100gb of google storage for work related stuff including mail database backups. I have an aunt that did everything off an ms remote session and it did have audio feedback. If the company use custom software then thats different, but it may simply be easier to access the server with the files and use an office on your system for work.
