Re: messages aren't read out automatically in the mail app

Hi,

Provided that users are using supported Windows 10 releases, as Windows 10 App Essentials require recent Windows 10 releases (current release supports Version 1909/November 2019 Update).

Cheers,

Joseph

Yes, you go to the manage add-ons in the tools menu of NVDA. Then you tab to where it says “get add-ons”. Then go down by headings until you get to the windows 10 app essentials. You’ll be asked if you want to update to the latest version of that add-on. Tab to the yes button and either hit space bar or enter.

Hope this helps.

Nvda works best with the Windows 10 mail app. Only nvda works consistently. Jaws keeps reading the title of a message that I have already deleted. Narrator isn't too bad, but nvda works much better in the Windows 10 mail app as your screen reader. That is why I use all three screen readers, nvda, jaws, and narrator. NVDA Official Add-Ons Repository Page

You can activate the link for any one of the add-ons you might like and download it from its page.  If NVDA is running, all you need to do is to select the add-on file and activate it and the NVDA Add-Ons Manager will take care of the rest.  You can also handle things directly through the Add-Ons manager, NVDA+N,T,A,Enter will bring it up.  Activate the Get Add-Ons button and you'll end up on the repository page I referenced at the start of this message.

Re: messages aren't read out automatically in the mail app

Hi,

Yes, you can get it from community add-ons website (addons.nvda-project.org).

As for what Windows 10 App Essentials can do (speaking as the author of this add-on): too many to list. But just to give you a highlight of its power:

  • Early access to upcoming Windows 10 features through accessibility enhancements.
  • Early access to solutions to Windows 10 issues noted by NVDA users while it is being developed.
  • Detecting more Windows 10 controls.
  • Announcing search suggestion count in Settings, Microsoft Store, and other search fields where NVDA does not announce first search result automatically.
  • Announcing product download status in Microsoft Store.
  • Browse mode while reading emails with Windows 10 Mail.
  • Support for modern search field in File Explorer.
  • Support for emoji panel and other modern input features on top of what NVDA already provides.
  • Improved support for Settings app on top of what NVDA provides.
  • Assisting in debugging events coming from Windows 10 apps and controls.

In the past, the add-on used to provide the following which are now part of NVDA or became unnecessary in recent releases:

  • Initial and more complete support for emoji panel and other modern input features, now part of NVDA.
  • Initial support for Chromium Edge (early 2020), now part of NVDA.
  • Fixing bugs which are now part of NVDA such as reducing verbosity when performing certain commands in recent Microsoft 365 releases.
  • Playing search suggestion sounds, now part of NVDA.
  • Detecting dialog boxes scattered around Windows 10, now part of NVDA.
  • One of the first add-ons to adopt add-on update feature, now part of Add-on Updater add-on.

The add-on isn’t as powerful as say, StationPlaylist or NVDA Remote, but it is considered influential.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: NVDA 2020.3 RC1 released

Gene,

In addition to what you've observed, which is the normal behavior, those settings, dictionaries, etc., are also retained if you uninstall one version of NVDA and then reinstall another.

It is most common these days, under Windows, for most programs to store user-selectable settings, add-ons, etc., under the user's AppData folder, not in the program's install folder, so that a "nuke and pave" for the program is not a "nuke and pave" of everything the user has spent a lot of time and effort setting up.  This is particularly handy when the beta versions come out and you may choose to get rid of one and go back to the current released version.  It can be done in minutes and with ease.

Hi all,

NVDA 2020.3rc1 has been released. This is a release candidate, and unless any critical issues are found, this will be identical to the 2020.3 release.  I would encourage everyone to test this release please.

There are improvements to stability and performance, particularly in Office.  eSpeak-NG has been updated, and there are new touchscreen options.  We've also added new emulated system keys in the input gestures dialog.

More highlights and download links can be found in the release blog post at: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2020-3rc1/

Kind regards

It doesn't work for me until I open a message, but once I open at least one message, it works just fine, until I close Thunderbird. Upon reopening it, I just repeat the process, open a message and quick key folder navigation works as it should. A bit quirky, but I can live with it. If it starts not working at all, then I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the add-on. for now, though, it works fine like this.

Topics about all application software, where the issue is with that software and/or its add-ons/extensions, and/or asking about how to use same, etc., that is not directly NVDA related really belong in the Chat Subgroup.

I've been getting a bit too lax lately, and intend to go back to being more strict about making the distinction between NVDA itself and its own add-ons and closely allied bits like getting a braille display working with NVDA and questions about things really not NVDA-related at all.

The fact that anyone uses NVDA to access a given piece of software does not make a question about using that software fall into "being about NVDA."  And I expect members to think before they post about whether what they're about to ask is actually about NVDA or not.

Re: Thunderbird Quick key folder navigation addon

Then I'd uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird itself.  I believe you are asked whether you wish to retain your account information when you do this, but it's been ages since I have.

The latest versions of Tbird and the add-on have worked as per usual on my machines where I have both.

Sorry to say after uninstalling and reinstalling the quick folder key nav addon it still doesn't work as it should.  You can go to the addons options and make sure it is checked that it is enabled and it works until you close Thunderbird and reopen thunderbird where it no longer works.

This was an odd "really major" jump in Thunderbird version and just like Thunderbird had not been self-updating a lot of the add-ons weren't, either.

Hi,

Make sure you have Windows 7 service pack 1 installed on your system. I'm not sure how NVDA works on Windows 7 now, as I'm using Windows 10 myself.

Hiya folks,

Have had an afternoon I’d rather forget trying to update NVDA to its latest version 2020.2

I tried updating within the program and also download the full installation file and both fail each time it tries to go to installing it.

I’ve also uninstalled it and tried it that way still no luck then I could not install an earlier version to I got hold of version 2016.3 then it installed and I could only go up to 2019 and then same issues happened again.

Is anyone else having this issue? Am running a windows 7, 64bit PC.

Regards,

Jim

Do you mean the one listed in section 16.1 of the user guide? It's --install-silent

My thunderbird just installed a update to version 78.3.2.  This update once again made the quick key folder addon unreliable. Sometimes it works and other times it does not.

Re: messages aren't read out automatically in the mail app

Hi,

An earlier version of this bug was fixed a while ago, but resurfaced after Windows 10 Mail’s executable file was renamed this year. I deployed a fix in Windows 10 App Essentials add-on back in February this year but waited for the new app to go live for everyone in summer before sending an official fix to NV Access for review. The next NVDA version in development (2020.4) will come with a built-in fix.

Cheers,

Joseph

Matthew.

Are you using NVDA?  If so, are you using the latest rc that just came out?  I this was fixed inthe bata cycle not sure as I do not have the rc installed and do not rely on the mail app.

Hi, everyone,

I’m trying the mail app. I was using thunderbird but it became sluggish so I decided to try the mail app again. I used to be able to hit enter on a message and it would be read out automatically. Has something changed? Now I have to go to the top of the message, hit insert down-arrow and I can read the message. How can I get messages to read out automatically in the mail app?

Thanks for your help in advance.
