Re: Updating NVDA

Leslie <soundsofmusic@...>

I just updated NVDA. Because I just found notices on the list.  That was a very easy update, or is it that I am getting used to updating with W10.  Can you believe that I used to be phobic about updating my computer with any older program?  It used to take so long to update with slower computers and programs.  Now it’s even easier to update Windows with these faster computers.  Yippi.

Hi.  I have the "automatically check for updates" and "notify for pending updates on start-up" checkboxes checked, but I don't seem to be getting notifications about updates.  I do receive the notifications when I manually check for updates.  For example, I checked after the notice to the list about the 2020.3 release.  Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks,

Louise

Good Day Joseph and Group:  Is it possible to continue this discussion?  It might be helpful to have this discussed on insiders email group- as well.  Is there anyway to have a form set up for how this could be used in the future, so, there isn't a problem with screen readers and web sites?

Hi,

Ultimately, it is up to operating systems (such as Windows) to reveal this information to web browsers. On Windows, screen readers can inform Windows that they are active through a Windows API function named SystemParametersInfo (part of user32.dll), which is meant to be used by apps to adjust their workings, and I bet web browsers can expose this information to web authoring engines. Because this is a website-specific thing, I think it would be best to ask web authors to adjust their interfaces on the fly or add a box to suppress this (that last bit will be cleared if you delete web cookies).

To expand upon the API discussion: a few weeks ago some NVDA users working on PowerShell said an alert about PSReadline was issued at startup. A conversation with PowerShell team at Microsoft revealed that this is due to screen reader flag detection, which ironically uses the same Windows API function mentioned above (the difference is which flags are passed into modify system parameters globally). Apparently this was in response to reports that PSReadline module (used for cursor movement, editing and such) wasn’t working well with older NVDA releases, and I advised Microsoft to test PSReadline with newer NVDA releases.

As for web accessibility and screen reader detection on the web, an ongoing discussion between web standards stakeholders (web authors, browser vendors, assistive technology vendors, standards bodies, academics, and such) deals with how should software interpret seemingly conflicting ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) specifications. For example, should screen readers enter application/focus mode automatically when encountering what is essentially a web dialog, or how should screen readers announce form field descriptions and such. Making matters complicated is the speed of web development as you will find yourself meeting new browser releases every six weeks, and that “web standards implementations” on PC’s have pretty much became a battle between Mozilla on one side and Google and friends across the court. At first glance, NVDA may appear to provide the same experience, but trust me: there are internal differences between what Firefox says versus what Chromium family tells you (which, by the way, extends to how NVDA supports accessibility API’s, which merits a separate discussion; I’ll take a stab at giving you a tour of such topics if requested).

Cheers,

Joseph

OK I am a strong believer in using Google to find answers before I ask one here.  Giving me the term SR flag did not help much in resolving this issue.  I tried all kinds of searches using SR flag and got nothing.  Maybe you can be a little more helpful in hiding the screen reader from web pages.

Don,

I don't think you can stop the websites, but I could swear that it was recently discussed that you can put screen readers, and I think it was NVDA in particular, into "stealth mode" at startup so that whatever flag it is that the screen reader sets/waves to tell software looking for it that it's present is not set.  But I'll be darned if I can remember the magic search term to find that discussion.

Re: Updating NVDA

I have not come across this, specifically, but my decades of dealing with all sorts of software have shown me that, over time, a lot of software that's been updated, and particularly repeatedly, via "install over" updates often gets wonky.

If/when they do, I simply uninstall them entirely using Control Panel, then install the updated version separately afterward.  This solves these issues in almost all cases.

NVDA makes this particularly easy, since your user data is stored in your own AppData folder, so any configuration changes you've made, add-ons you've installed, etc., are all still there when you do a fresh install.

Hi,

I haven’t created a portable copy of NVDA for quite some time.  However, I believe that this can be done using a USB flash.  Check section 3.2 of the users guide which is in the NVDA help menu for further details on it.

Hey there! I want to ask if it's possible to make a portable copy of nvda in an USB disk and make it autorun?
If yes, what's the process?

I've only noticed one thing so far, and it's not necessarily a bad thing either, just something new to adjust to. The pauses after periods are shorter. Sentences feel closer together than they did before when reading. Again, this is something I could become accustomed to with time, and isn't necessarily a problem. NV Access is pleased to announce that version 2020.3 of NVDA, the free screen reader for Microsoft Windows, is now available for download. We encourage all users to upgrade to this version.

NVDA 2020.3 includes several large improvements to stability and performance, particularly in Microsoft Office applications. There are new settings to toggle touchscreen support and graphics reporting. The existence of marked (highlighted) content can be reported in browsers, and there are new German braille tables.

Please note, after updating any software, it is a good idea to restart the computer. Restart by going to the Shutdown dialog, selecting “restart” and pressing ENTER. Updating software can change files which are in use. This can lead to instability and strange behaviour which is resolved by rebooting. This is the first thing to try if you do notice anything odd after updating.

While downloading NVDA, please consider becoming a monthly donor. Contributions like yours help NV Access continue our important work.

We also have a range of training material in the NV Access Shop to help you increase your skills with NVDA. Start with the popular Basic Training for NVDA in electronic text, audio and braille. Re: Microsoft Edge Internet Explorer mode conflict with NVDA

Gene

Programs in general work after they are no longer supported. Some people still use XP. Some people still use Office 2007. No longer supported means the program is no longer updated, and in the case of a program where security updates are issued, such updates aren't issued either.

It isn't a question in the case of Internet Explorer of whether it will continue to work. When it is unsupported, and I think that will occur in about two years, it won't receive security updates. Therefore, it will become increasingly vulnerable to attacks. It is already vulnerable now even with security updates for various reasons and, as is being seen, increasing numbers of web sites won't work with it over time.

But you can still use it on pages that you think are safe enough to risk doing so if it works significantly better on such pages. With most pages, using Internet Explorer will confer no benefit.

Hi. I was able to use Internet Explorer to read the feed correctly, as well as the other ones that use xml. I didn't know if Internet Explorer would still work after its end-of-life date. I'll try removing the trailing text like "rss" or "feed" as suggested in an earlier message in this thread. A couple of the websites I use don't date the podcast episodes on the regular page, so I like the feeds in those cases.

Thanks,
