Re: Question: NVDA Silent When First Opening Word and When Initiating the Save Dialog

Yes, I've seen this using word 5.1 in its day. The screen reader for doss was not that great. It served its purpose but often it went silent when saving your documents. I see this very seldom using word 2010.

hi.
about libreoffice i can say i observed since version 5.0 rarely and
5.1 all the time specially.
with 5.1 of libreoffice for this reason and very change in its menus, i was not comfortable!

have to hit alt and

Its not just confined to nvda either, dolphin screenreaders do a

Subject: [nvda] Question: NVDA Silent When First Opening Word and When
Initiating the Save Dialog

The observation I'd like to ask about occurs on my desktop PC running
Windows 10 Anniversary Edition but I also notice similar behavior on a
Windows 7 laptop. The desktop has Office 2016 installed and the laptop
has Office 2013.

When I first open Word NVDA is often silent, rather than speaking the
title of the program which has gained focus. In other words, the
expected behavior is that, once Word opens and gains focus, NVDA would
verify this by speaking the title of the window, such as "document 1,
Microsoft Word." However, when opening Word after the system has
booted this does not happen. NVDA is silent and pressing insert+T just
reads "winword." At this point, if I move focus away from and then
back to the document window NVDA reads the title as expected. As an
example, if I press the alt key once to move to the ribbon and then a
second time to return to the document I will hear "Document 1, Microsoft Word."
Subsequent attempts to open Word usually cause NVDA to behave as
expected and the title of the document window is automatically spoken.

Along the same lines, I see similar behavior when attempting to save a
document by pressing ctrl+S. When I press this key, the "save" dialog
loads but NVDA is totally silent. If I press the alt key twice, NVDA
then confirms that I am in the dialog. Another NVDA user brought this
up during a recent computer users' group that I moderate and so I
decided to post these experiences to this group to see if others have
observed similar behavior. I'm wondering if an open ticket exists for
this bug on Github.

Hi guys

I was wondering if any one on this list has done a factory reset for windows 10 with NVDA?

A lady i am trying to help has a copy of Windows 10 on it with the latest version of NVDA 2016.2.1

When she tries to go into mozilla fire fox which is online she can see
the page has loaded, but NVDA will speak nothing on the screen it just
says unknown. Even tabing etc does nothing.

NVDA will not even speak the menus up the top either.

She gets the same sort of result with mozilla thunderbird. when you tab
it just says unknown etc and the menus do not speak either.

I noticed in some programs NVDA will not speak the menus or may speak a
little of them.

I can tab around the desktop, but down on the taskbar it might say
unknown or when you get to the desktop it will speak what is there.

I have done the usual and uninstalled NVDA and also removed the settings
for the %appdata% section as well. Restarted NVDA etc and even done a
system restore but it will only let me go so far back.

She is running a lap top i think it is and I am not sure if I reset it
to factory defaults does it go back to where you have to specify your
drive etc like I done on a brand new lap top one time or will it load
with Windows? then it is a matter of putting NVDA back onto the lap top?

I have also done a factory reset on NVdA etc, but am running out of
ideas. By the way i was able to remote into her pc to see what is
happening but looks like the nvda.ini file might be corrupted.

Could i copy a good nvda.ini file to the usb stick and move it across
and fix it this way by over riding the nvda.ini file under the %appdata%
section.

She does have a computer running Xp of which I can email to with a
working copy of NVDA and move it across with a usb stick.

I have tried with a fresh copy of NVDA etc and done it this way, but
looks like it is still having the problem.
I have also renamed the nvda.ini file to old then put nvda onto it,
but it still seems the same.

The lap top has internet access, but is unuseable to use the browser or
emails.

Would copying a working nvda.ini file from a good pc to the other one
then over riding the file maybe fix the problem?

Any ideas apart from a reformat would be good.

Hi

Yes to the browsers and programs with menus.

I will get her to download a copy of window eyes and see if i get the
same result. Hopefully we might be going up her way this week and might
be able to do it in person after the conference.

at least then also if i do need sighted help the wife can do that part
of it.

hopefully we can.

I think also i will if i do really have to take it back to factory reset
also enable it so it saves every so offen for restore points.

Hi Gene:

Since she has Office 10, she could try downloading the version of

the same error in Firefox. This will tell her whether or not the
problem lies in the Screenreader.
The website for this software is:
www.windoweyesforoffice.com.

By the way, does the phenominon that you describe happen when using
NVDA with either Internet Explorer or Chrome?

Re: Question: NVDA Silent When First Opening Word and When Initiating the Save Dialog

Hi David,

I can duplicate this on word 2016 running windows 10. However, if I read the
current line, I do hear something like "waiting for microsoft word". I swap out
of word and swap back in and NVDA behaves as expected.

Subject: [nvda] Question: NVDA Silent When First Opening Word and When
Initiating the Save Dialog

The observation I'd like to ask about occurs on my desktop PC running Windows 10
Anniversary Edition but I also notice similar behavior on a Windows 7 laptop.
The desktop has Office 2016 installed and the laptop has Office 2013.

When I first open Word NVDA is often silent, rather than speaking the title of
the program which has gained focus. In other words, the expected behavior is
that, once Word opens and gains focus, NVDA would verify this by speaking the
title of the window, such as "document 1, Microsoft Word." However, when opening
Word after the system has booted this does not happen. NVDA is silent and
pressing insert+T just reads "winword." At this point, if I move focus away from
and then back to the document window NVDA reads the title as expected. As an
example, if I press the alt key once to move to the ribbon and then a second
time to return to the document I will hear "Document 1, Microsoft Word."
Subsequent attempts to open Word usually cause NVDA to behave as expected and
the title of the document window is automatically spoken.

Along the same lines, I see similar behavior when attempting to save a document
by pressing ctrl+S. When I press this key, the "save" dialog loads but NVDA is
totally silent. If I press the alt key twice, NVDA then confirms that I am in
the dialog. Another NVDA user brought this up during a recent computer users'
group that I moderate and so I decided to post these experiences to this group
to see if others have observed similar behavior. I'm wondering if an open ticket
exists for this bug on Github.

Here is an excerpt of a presentation I did on using Thunderbird many years
ago. it's about seven or eight minutes long and it deals with working with
addresses. The last thing described and demonstrated is how to place

Hi All I am using the latest version of Thunderbird here and wonder how you
access the "CC and BCC" fields?. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with
experience in using these fields with Thunderbird and how they do it.

Many thanks in advance,

After you fill in the "to" field, press Enter and shift-tab. You can then
arrow up and down to choose, cc and bcc fields. Tab over to the edit field
when you found the one you want.

Hi Anthony

Yes, you are probably right, but we figured we'd post it on all the groups

Thanks anyway.

Re: Question: NVDA Silent When First Opening Word and When Initiating the Save Dialog

hi.
about libreoffice i can say i observed since version 5.0 rarely and
5.1 all the time specially.
with 5.1 of libreoffice for this reason and very change in its menus,
i was not comfortable!

Yes seen this and also on Libra Office as well. I think its some kind of

now also get a similar issue at times in firefox where I have to hit alt and

escape to get the page to read.

Its not just confined to nvda either, dolphin screenreaders do a similar
thing.

If anyone has a cast iron fix for these missing events or slow catching up

then feel free to say them. My newest machine with 8 gigs of memory seems to

be imune to it.

In other words, the
expected behavior is that, once Word opens and gains focus, NVDA would
verify this by speaking the title of the window, such as "document 1,
Microsoft Word." However, when opening Word after the system has booted
this does not happen. NVDA is silent and pressing insert+T just reads
"winword." At this point, if I move focus away from and then back to the
document window NVDA reads the title as expected. As an example, if I
press the alt key once to move to the ribbon and then a second time to
return to the document I will hear "Document 1, Microsoft Word."

Another NVDA user brought this up
during a recent computer users' group that I moderate and so I decided
to post these experiences to this group to see if others have observed
similar behavior. I'm wondering if an open ticket exists for this bug on
Github.

Hi Georgi,

Re downloading NVDA. The reason an e-mail is asked for is both because it
gives an easy way to opt in to our mailing list (which isn't sold or shared
and which is only really posted to when there is actually news to share)
and to help keep track of download statistics. Yes it could be seen as a
little annoying, but to be honest, there are very few programs which don't
ask for this nowdays. Once you have downloaded the program and installed
it, then it automatically checks for updates and prompts to install the new
version without asking for an email address etc again.

Re the snapshots, I'll have to have a look tomorrow - I've been using the
RC build lately - I know there was a bug a few weeks ago where it would
ding at you as if you'd pressed a wrong key, doing many things in Word,
which sounds a bit like you describe - I thought we'd sorted that out but
it could be something else. Are you using the latest snapshot and can you
give a specific example to reproduce it please?

Kind regards

Quentin.

Good afternoon group!

I really can't understand why it's necessary to give my e-mail for
downloading NvdA. No program requires this.

Another question concerning: this time the snapshot-versions of NvdA.

I'd like with pleasure to use snapshot-versions of NvdA and on this way
to
give my little contribution for NvdA. But the reason I don't do this is:
the awful sound, which sometimes is to hear during the work with any
snapshot version of NvdA. Believe me: it's really awful and very
unpleasant, and it startles when someone do something and pay attention
on
his work. Well, when this sound is lively necessary for The developers of
NvdA, isn't it possible to find some lower and more pleasant sound?

ASSISTANCE OR ADVICE

Christo Vorster

Hi Group

The Institute for the Blind, or as it is known after a name change, Kaleidoscope, opened a hightech training centre for the training of vision impaired people, world wide, on I-phone, or IOS based equipment.

Of the intended trainees will be the students at the Pioneer School for the Vission Impaired in Worcester, South Africa.

Can anybody advise us on the availability of educational games, or any other games, that might be suited for the initial introduction of children aged from 5 to 10 years. Advice on games for teenagers and adults will also be welcome.

The games must be I-phone or IOS based. If the games are free, it will be fantastic, but if not, we’ll buy. The bottom line is just that we need to get such games to use for the introduction of children to the I-phone/IOS environment.

I hope that someone will be able to give us some information

Regards, and thanks

I had exactly this problem a few months ago when I installed Office 2016 on
my PC running Windows 10. I found the solution to do with the trust centre
and with unblocking files in the properties of each file before opening
them. This is different from "protection view" when the document is open. I
did send a note earlier this week on this topic but I expect it was swamped
by other responses.

Can you confirm that the files you are trying to open are blocked or
unblocked in "Properties"?

I have changed the trust center settings but haven't yet looked at the
